Bucs owner/co-chairman Joel Glazer discussed the possibility of the team wearing the Bucs’ throwback Bucco Bruce uniforms again on Wednesday. Tampa Bay retired the orange and white creamsicle look in 1996 and changed to red and pewter and introduced a new logo in 1997.

Since then the Bucs have worn the Bucco Bruce uniforms just four times from 2009-12 in throwback games. The first came in 2009 when Tampa Bay upset the visiting Green Bay Packers, 38-28. The Bucs lost the next three throwback games and were forced to stop wearing the orange and white uniforms due to an NFL rule change.

In order to prevent potential liability in concussion lawsuits, the league mandated a one-helmet rule in 2013 that prevented teams from having players wear two helmets. The Bucs’ old Bucco Bruce helmets were white so the team could no longer pull off the throwback look with pewter helmets.

“On the throwbacks we’re constantly on the league’s doorstep trying to get them to move so we can wear our throwbacks,” Glazer said. “We’re not there yet. But there are discussions going on and hopefully at some point in the future that will happen. I know how popular they are with our fans.”

Last year Bucs head coach Bruce Arians discussed that the throwbacks could return for the 2021 season due to a possible rule change. Arians called the Bucco Bruce look “the best uniforms in the league.”

Glazer also discussed the team’s uniform change for the 2020. The Bucs ditched the unpopular alarm clock font and return to the classic uniform worn from 1997-2013.

Glazer commented on the team’s new pewter jerseys and all-pewter look that Tampa Bay debuted during the 2020 season. The Bucs wore that ensemble in three games last year.

“On the uniform change last year, it was unbelievably well received,” Glazer said. “And the pewter [jerseys] people loved it. It’s great to see a little more traditional look than we’ve had in the past. I know our players liked it and our fans liked it. It all worked out and it all went together well with the Super Bowl championship.”
