The Bucs are the closest thing the NFL has to a Super Team roster, adding talent to their squad at every turn. According to ESPN’s Jeff Darlington, they could have interest in acquiring yet another weapon. Browns wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., who will likely be released soon, is enamored with the idea of playing with Tom Brady, per Darlington. The feeling might be mutual, too.
“We can talk about all the places that might make the most sense,” Darlington said on Thursday. “But there is one romantic destination that I can’t get out of my head, and that is the Tampa Bay Bucs. I have never heard of another quarterback that Odell Beckham Jr. respects and has aspired to play with more than Tom Brady. Of course, it matters whether or not he is able to pick his team. In which case, we should keep that in the back of our heads.”

It’s important to remember that Darlington was the first reporter to declare Brady was unlikely to return to New England, months before free agency began. He’s typically had the pulse of Brady’s camp, which makes this report interesting. However, it’s still remarkably unlikely that Beckham is signed by the Bucs. Outside of his declining health, production and his questionable football character, the Bucs have hardly any money to pay him without restructure. Beckham would have to be willing to play for much cheaper than his expected rate.
Antonio Brown’s ankle injury is the one reason why this move could make some sense. Ian Rapoport reported last week that the Bucs expect Brown back after the bye week. But Bruce Arians hasn’t mentioned Brown’s potential return when discussing the status of other injured Bucs. However, Brown has not been placed on injured reserve. That’s typically a sign the team doesn’t expect his ankle sprain to keep him out long term. Brown posted an Instagram story of him biking outside while wearing a boot earlier this week.
“Tom Brady loves his roster and he loves his players,” Darlington said. “Scotty Miller is coming back. Antonio Brown is dealing with an ankle injury though. We’ll see how that all plays out. But keep in the back of your mind the fact that Tom Brady and Odell Beckham Jr. have long aspired to play alongside one another.”
I’m sure Brady and Beckham respect the heck out of each other. But this one feels like a long shot. Beckham needs an opportunity to produce and revitalize himself somewhere. In Tampa Bay, he would be the team’s fourth-best wide receiver while learning a new offense. The fit just doesn’t make sense.
Also, because Beckham Jr. is being released after the trade deadline, he must first clear waivers. The Bucs are near the bottom of the waiver order right now. Tampa Bay wouldn’t claim him at his current cost. So Beckham would need to hit free agency for the Bucs to have a shot at him.
