The Bucs opened up their 2022 preseason on Saturday night at Raymond James Stadium, playing an entertaining game with the Dolphins – one that ended in a 26-24 loss. While it was a great 2022 debut for some, Tampa Bay took the field without most of its regulars.
When the inactive list came out before Saturday’s game, it featured 29 players on the Bucs’ side. It didn’t come as a shock, though. Head coach Todd Bowles said earlier in August that most of his starters would sit for the game against Miami. But what about next Saturday’s exhibition against the Titans in Tennessee? Expect to see more regulars, but perhaps not all of them.
“Some of them will play more this week,” Bowles said Sunday. “We will see how practice goes, but all of them won’t be out – some of them will be playing.”
The Bucs’ week consists of practices in Tampa Monday and Tuesday before they head up to Tennessee for joint practices with the Titans. The Bucs will likely get a lot of work in during those practices on Wednesday and Thursday, which may determine which first-teamers appear in Saturday’s matchup – and for how long they play. Quarterback Tom Brady is one starter who definitely won’t play next weekend. The 45-year-old quarterback is excused from practice this week, with Bowles and the team expecting him back after the game against the Titans.
The final contest of the preseason is Aug. 27 in Indianapolis. It sounds like some starters will play in that game, as it’s the final tune-up before the regular season.
“It all depends on how much we get done this week and how much we come through healthy this week,” Bowles said. “Then we will make the plan next week, but they will play – they definitely will play.”
The Bucs open up the 2022 regular season on Sept. 11, heading to Dallas for a Sunday Night Football matchup against the Cowboys.
