Latest Bucs Headlines

Just like that, the NFL Draft is one week away. Next Thursday night, the seven-round extravaganza will get underway and we’ll be that much closer to seeing how the Bucs plan to go about filling some of the biggest needs on their roster.

These days, offensive tackle and edge rusher are the two positions that seem to dominate the conversation as to where the Bucs might go with the No. 19 overall pick. Both are big needs and both positions have some intriguing prospects to consider as Tampa Bay looks to set itself up for years of contention with a young core.

As we’ve done plenty of times since the middle of last season, we’re here to go around the NFL world and round up some mock drafts. Let’s check in and see who some of the experts and analysts have the Bucs drafting next weekend, shall we?

Jonathan Jones — CBS Sports

Tennessee Ot Darnell Wright - Photo By: Usa TodayIn a mock published on Wednesday, Jones has the Bucs trading up with the Patriots, getting the No. 14 pick so they can select a new tackle. New England then turns around and selects Georgia edge rusher Nolan Smith with Tampa Bay’s original pick.

Round 1, Pick 14: Tennessee OT, Darnell Wright

“Tampa simply couldn’t wait any longer. The Buccaneers desperately need a tackle. This could very well cause Wirfs to flip to the left side, and the Bucs are OK with that.”

Oliver Hodgkinson — Pro Football Network

Hodgkinson released a three-round mock on Tuesday, and it’s interesting to say the least.

Round 1, Pick 19: Georgia EDGE, Nolan Smith

“There are lots of potential directions that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers could take in the first round, but here, they snap up one of the most athletic pass rushers in the 2023 NFL Draft. Nolan Smith is an explosive pass rusher with a remarkable first step, incredible lateral agility, the flexibility to bend around the edge, and impressive run-game impact for a smaller player.”

Round 2, Pick 50: Tennessee WR, Cedric Tillman

“Mike Evans is good for 1,000 yards every season, but Tampa Bay could still seek to bolster their WR in the 2023 NFL Draft. Cedric Tillman’s injury saw him overshadowed by his teammate, but he’s arguably the better prospect as a big-bodied pass catcher blessed with impressive athletic upside.”

Round 3, Pick 82: BYU QB, Jaren Hall

“Despite the addition of Baker Mayfield, the Buccaneers are likely still in the QB market, and Jaren Hall gives them a talented option to evaluate with exciting arm strength and electric off-script playmaking ability.”

Michael Renner — Pro Football Focus

In his latest mock (released on Wednesday), Renner has the Bucs standing pat at No. 19 and taking an edge rusher, though not one who has often been linked to the team during the pre-draft process.

Round 1, Pick 19: Clemson EDGE, Myles Murphy

“The Bucs just need to reload at valuable positions to get themselves out of the cap-strapped position they are in. Murphy makes a lot of sense as a high-end, toolsy project.”

Bucs Ilb Devin White

Barnwell releases an “all-trades” mock annually, and he dropped this year’s on Wednesday. Keep in mind that every pick in this mock is traded, making for a lot of chaos that certainly won’t unfold on draft night. Every trade exists within its own universe, too.

So, with all of that in mind, he has Tampa Bay trading Devin White to the Texans for the No. 12 overall pick, as well as a fourth-round selection (No. 104 overall).

“Here’s another way for the Bucs to creatively move up the board for their quarterback or left tackle of the future, albeit at the cost of White. The 2021 Pro Bowler had an uneven season a year ago, and amid a cap crunch, negotiations between the Bucs and their star linebacker haven’t gone well. White requested a trade last week, and while the team might not choose to honor White’s suggestion, his future could lay elsewhere. This trade would value White as being worth the 51st pick in a typical draft by the Johnson chart, roughly where Roquan Smith was valued when he was dealt to the Ravens under similar circumstances last year.”

Peter Schrager — NFL Network

Schrager released his mock draft 1.0 on Tuesday, clarifying that these selections aren’t what he would do. Rather, this mock comes from what he’s hearing from around the league. He has the Bucs going with a first-round cornerback.

Round 1, Pick 19: Maryland CB, Deonte Banks

“Banks has enjoyed a really nice pre-draft period, working out at an extremely high level and interviewing well with NFL teams. The Buccaneers brought back Jamel Dean but lost Sean Murphy-Bunting to the Titans. Tampa Bay has many needs. It would be interesting if Will Levis and/or Hendon Hooker were still on the board at this point, which is certainly possible in the real thing.”

Chris Trapasso — CBS Sports

Notre Dame Te Michael Mayer Bucs

Trapasso released a full seven-round mock on Wednesday. It begins with the Bucs trading back a couple of times, first with the Jaguars to drop from No. 19 to No. 24, then with the Bengals to drop from No. 24 to No. 28. And with that newly acquired pick, Tampa Bay goes with an offensive weapon.

Round 1, Pick 28: Notre Dame TE, Michael Mayer

“After a pair of trade backs, the Buccaneers snag Mayer to be their complete TE1 for the next decade. In the moves, Tampa Bay received No. 92 from Cincinnati and a 2024 second-round pick from Jacksonville.”

Trapasso later has the team making more trades to drop further and acquire more picks, and this thing goes off the rails quickly. As the rest of the mock unfolds, Tampa Bay very boldly drafts FIVE (?) edge rushers and two cornerbacks out of its 10 remaining picks. See for yourself, I beg…

Round 2, Pick 50: TCU IOL, Steve Avila
Round 3, Pick 92 (from Bengals): Oregon EDGE, D.J. Johnson
Round 3, Pick 99 (from 49ers): Auburn RB, Tank Bigsby
Round 5, Pick 153: FAMU EDGE, Isaiah Land
Round 5, Pick 160 (from Giants): Michigan EDGE, Mike Morris
Round 5, Pick 175: Minnesota CB, Terell Smith
Round 6, Pick 179 (from Texans): USC CB, Mekhi Blackmon
Round 6, Pick 181 (from Colts): Florida EDGE, Brenton Cox
Round 6, Pick 196: Oklahoma State EDGE/DL Tyler Lacy
Round 7, Pick 252: Stanford WR, Elijah Higgins

From whatever that previous mock was, we make a hard turn into the world of analytics. Menon and Spielberger released their “PFF Analytics 2023 NFL Mock Draft” this week. The Bucs get themselves their new left tackle.

Round 1, Pick 19: Oklahoma OT, Anton Harrison

“The Bucs recently signed Matt Feiler, but he projects more as a guard, especially since they traded away Shaq Mason and Feiler played his past two seasons at left guard with the Chargers. Tampa Bay still needs to find a tackle opposite of Tristan Wirfs, and with Harrison still on the board, this pairing makes sense. This would also allow Wirfs to remain on the right side of the line, given that Harrison played left tackle since he was a true freshman at Oklahoma.”

Dane Brugler — The Athletic

Brugler published his own seven-round mock on Monday. This one looks a lot better for the Bucs.

Round 1, Pick 19: Tennessee OT, Darnell Wright

“Any questions about Tristan Wirfs’ ability to play left tackle? Watch his final season at Iowa (he played both left and right tackle that year) and you can see him dominate on the blind side. A combination of Wirfs at left tackle and Wright at right tackle might quickly become one of the best OT tandems in the NFL.”

Kansas State Olb Felix Anudike-Uzomah Bucs

Round 2, Pick 50: Kansas State EDGE, Felix Anudike-Uzomah
Round 3, Pick 82: Texas RB, Roschon Johnson
Round 5, Pick 153: Stanford CB, Kyu Blu Kelly
Round 5, Pick 175: Georgia S, Christopher Smith
Round 6, Pick 179: Shepherd G, Joey Fisher
Round 6, Pick 181: Cincinnati WR, Tre Tucker
Round 6, Pick 196: Oklahoma DT, Jalen Redmond
Round 7, Pick 252: Tennessee LB, Jeremy Banks

Justin Melo — The Draft Network

To finish things off, we have a two-round mock released on Wednesday. In it, the Bucs went heavy on the secondary.

Round 1, Pick 19: Alabama DB, Brian Branch

“The Buccaneers take a best-player-available approach that also happens to fill a positional need. Alabama safety Brian Branch is a top-20 talent and the Buccaneers lost a ton of secondary depth in free agency, including versatile talent Sean Murphy-Bunting. Branch would immediately form a fearsome duo alongside Antoine Winfield Jr.”

Round 2, Pick 50: Utah CB, Clark Phillips III

“Clark Phillips III is undersized, but you can’t measure his heart and physicality. Phillips is an instinctive corner with elite ball skills when playing zone coverage. He’d compliment Jamel Dean beautifully.”
