Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield has won over his Tampa Bay teammates in the two seasons he’s arrived in the city. He’s done it so well that he’s also gained favor with former Bucs players, too. And that player is a future of Hall of Famer.

Former Bucs tight end Rob Gronkowski is well known for his friendship with fellow former New England and Tampa Bay quarterback Tom Brady. It was Brady that helped recruit Gronkowski to come out of retirement and facilitate a trade between the Patriots and Bucs to get him to Tampa and win a Super Bowl in the 2020 season, the first year that Brady and Gronkowski arrived.
Apparently, Brady isn’t the only Bucs quarterback that Gronk has a relationship with as we’ve come to find out that he knows Baker Mayfield well after spending time together at the Bucs’ facility.
Gronkowski still spends a good amount of time in Florida and specifically in Tampa. With the events of the hurricanes come through recently, he has set up a fundraiser called Gronk’s Hurricane Helene & Milton Relief Fund, with the goal to help those impacted by the hurricane. Here’s the link if you would like to donate to it.
To the surprise of no one, Gronkowski has had a very successful media career since retiring after the 2021 season. He’s still in tons of commercials for different companies, is on the Fox NFL pre- and post-game and shows on the panel of analysts and also hosts a number of different events and media ventures. Gronk is also dipping his toe into the podcast waters, teaming up with his other good buddy, Julian Edelman.
In their new podcast – Dudes on Dudes with Gronk And Jules – the duo spend the show talking about their favorite football players both historically and currently playing. In the first episode they talked about Randy Moss, Tony Gonzalez and Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield.
Rob Gronkowski Reveals Workout Story With Baker Mayfield
That’s when Gronkowski shared an anecdote that he’s spent some time with Mayfield in Bucs’ weight room of all places. And one moment in particular came on a very important day for Baker Mayfield. This offseason was big for Mayfield as he signed a three-year, $100 million contract to remain in Tampa. That deal was signed in the morning and the next thing you know, he and Gronk were pumping iron.

“I worked out with Baker,” Gronkowski said. “You (Edelman) thought I threw with him, but I said I worked out. I was breaking some PR (personal records) records this year in the weight room. He was cheering me on and we were going nuts after the PR records that I hit. He’s a guy that’s not afraid to get dirty, he’s under the bench press, he’s doing the squats with you, he’s doing the deadlifts. What I really like about the dude is he’s just a normal dude, man.
“He just wants to have a good time. He actually signed a three-year $100 million the morning of and then he came to the workout session that day and it was like nothing happened. It was just like he showed up, he didn’t have an ego, he didn’t have a big head or nothing. He just showed up, put the work in that day and hit some more PRs.”

Baker Mayfield has been described by Bucs head coach Todd Bowles and others that Mayfield is a quarterback that has an offensive lineman’s mentality. It makes perfect sense that he and Gronkowski would bond over getting hyped up while lifting weights, especially on a day when Mayfield got his pay day.
We’ve seen Mayfield tell other players to get their weight up, it appears breaking some of his personal records in bench press, squats and dead lifts gives him the confidence to say so. It seems like Mayfield might have a bit of a different relationship with Gronk than he does with Brady considering what’s been said already this year.
But Mayfield just continues to be himself and work towards getting the Bucs another winning season, backed by Mayfield’s performance.
