When Bucs head coach Todd Bowles walked up to the microphones after Friday’s practice and announced who was out for Sunday’s game he said Ben Bredeson, Bucky Irving, Jamel Dean and Haason Reddick.
Did you notice whose name isn’t in there?
Chris Godwin Jr.
That’s right. For the first time since Week 5, it looks like wide receiver Chris Godwin Jr. is going to play again. Godwin has missed several weeks with a fibula injury that’s more of a pain tolerance thing. He practiced in full on Thursday and has a legitimate chacne to play on Sunday night football when the Bucs head on the road to play the Rams.

“He’s definitely trending towards playing,” Bowles said. Then he expanded on what this does for. Tampa Bay’s offense.
“He’s extremely smart, number one. He’s great in the run game and the pass game. He’s a heck of a blocker and he’s a heck of a receiver; he’s got great hands and is reliable. He’s one of them guys once Baker starts to scramble that knows how to get open where he finds him and trusts him, so it brings an added element for us.”
The mere presence of Godwin Jr. helps lighten the load for Tampa Bay’s offense. It takes some attention off of Emeka Egbuka, and of course gives an important target for Baker Mayfield.
What About Bucs RB Bucky Irving?
There’s been a lot of conversation about Bucky Irving lately. Most of it has been vague speculation. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk fed most of those rumors when he said that Irving was dealing with something non-injury related that would keep him from playing for an extended period of time. Today, Bowles set the record straight.
“He’s not going through much off the field. He got hurt. He didn’t handle it well because he’d been hurt for the first time. He got a full practice this week. [He] will definitely be trending up, playing next week. So, just preparing him for the Arizona [Cardinals] game, which was what we were getting him ready for. And that’s what he will be ready for.”

Irving has been listed on the team’s practice report as a full participant all week. He missed one game in 2024 due to injury, but this is the first time Irving has faced an injury that has kept him out of action for multiple games across both his college and professional career.
If Irving can rejoin the team, along with Godwin, the offense will have the closest facsimile to full health they have had all season. The two players combined for over 2,000 yards and 13 touchdowns last year.
