Bucs Practice Buzz is a weekly segment on Pewter Report’s YouTube channel Pewter Report TV where we highlight the biggest moments and clips from the day of practice from the Advent Health Training Center.
All the rage of Wednesday’s practice was the return of starting quarterback Baker Mayfield. It was the first time in several weeks that Mayfield was able to participate, and there was a slightly different look to him when he was throwing. Mayfield had a white glove on his right hand, the same hand that he suffered his dislocated thumb injury. At times Tampa Bay’s starting quarterback was moving around his glove and looking at his hand, but generally speaking he was able to throw well enough.

Whether it’s Baker Mayfield or Jalon Daniels starting at quarterback on Sunday against the Panthers, they need to improve the offense and stabilize the wide receiver room. Veteran Chris Godwin Jr. has made an impact when he gets the football, but the amount of times it’s been thrown his way is too few and far between.
There’s familiarity in this matchup between the Bucs and Panthers, and not just because they are NFC South rivals. We all know that former Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales has been the head coach of the Panthers for a couple of seasons, but there’s a new wrinkle this year as former Tampa Bay wide receiver coach Brad Idzik, who is good friends with Canales and followed him to Carolina, has been the offensive play caller this year. He’s helped get the Panthers to averaging 29.2 points per game. Bucs head coach Todd Bowles talked about what it’s like going against a coach that he knows well.
Tampa Bay’s defense has rounded into shape lately but there is a questions about what’s going on with defensive tackle Calijah Kancey. There’s a long way to go but Kancey has yet to record a sack or tackle for loss yet this season, and it’s starting to be a concern. What’s it going to take to get him going? That got discussed.
