Former Bucs running back Rachaad White has signed with the Washington Commanders. This is according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

No details have on the finances have come out yet other than its a one-year deal.

Rachaad White’s Time With The Bucs

Originally drafted out of Arizona State in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft, White was a complimentary back for former Super Bowl champion Leonard Fournette. He quickly endeared himself to the Bucs fanbase as Fournette struggled throughout the year while White showed flashes. Many were calling for him to get more touches. By the end of his rookie year White had put together 771 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns.

Following that season the Bucs released Fournette and turned to White as their lead back in 2023. As the Bucs outperformed most analysts’ expectations in route to an NFC Divisional Round appearance, White had his best season as a pro. He carried the ball 272 times for 990 yards and six touchdowns. He also added 64 catches for 549 yards and another three scores, developing into one of the league’s best pass catching backs.

White had a fantastic postseason that year averaging 4.7 yards per carry and logging nine first downs while catching a touchdown.

By 2024, White had established himself as a fantastic receiver and pass protector – the perfect third down back. But he struggled to run the ball efficiently behind the Bucs’ mid zone scheme. That year Tampa Bay drafted Bucky Irving in the 4th round of the NFL Draft. White started the season as the Bucs’ primary back with Irving working as his compliment. But by the end of the season the two players had switched roles. Both backs prospered under former offensive coordinator Liam Coen as White ran for 613 yards, and three touchdowns while he averaged 4.3 yards per carry and Irving posted 1,122 yards, 5.4 yards per tote and eight scores on the ground.

Last year, White’s usage increased as Irving dealt with injuries. He played 17 games, starting eight, while once again averaging 4.3 yards per carry. He ran the ball 132 times for 572 yards and caught 50 passes for 218 yards with four total touchdowns.

White has proven over his time with the Bucs that he is a capable, but not consistently explosive back. He’s the perfect backup because he is average-to-good in every facet of the game. That is what has helped him secure his current deal with [Enter team here].

What This Means For The Bucs

The Bucs had already moved on from White with the signing of Kenneth Gainwell, who signed a two-year deal with Tampa Bay. He is considered an upgrade over White and was named team MVP by the Steelers a season ago.

With Irving’s injuries last year, combined with his slight frame, Gainwell can take over the starting role if need be. The team will need have a complimentary player with Gainwell who can limit his touches on a game-by-game basis while also being able to step into the starter role should Irving miss time in the future.

The Bucs also re-signed Sean Tucker and he will be in the mix for the running back room. He’s always capable of a big play. The room appears to be stabilized with these three players.

For his career White has run for 2,656 yards, averaging 3.9 yards per carry, and 14 touchdowns while adding 1,450 yards on 205 catches and another 11 touchdowns through the air.
