Ever since they returned in 2023, the Bucs’ creamsicle throwbacks have been a hot topic of discussion among many within the fan base. One side argues that wearing the creamsicles pays homage to an era characterized by losing and serving as the laughingstock of the league. Along those same lines, critics of the throwback look point to Tampa Bay’s current six-game losing streak and 1-6 record overall while wearing the orange jerseys as throwbacks.

Meanwhile, plenty of fans love the creamsicle look. Nostalgia is powerful, and it doesn’t hurt that the Bucs have leaned into their creamsicle games by decking Raymond James Stadium out in orange and white decor. Of course, the Bucco Bruce and orange and white throwback merchandise is a massive hit, too. It’s easy to see why.

The point is, the creamsicles can be divisive. What was far less divisive was the Bucs’ decision to bring back their 1976 throwbacks – the old white and orange uniforms – for their 50th season in 2025. Tampa Bay donned this version of its iconic look to pay tribute to the original Buccaneer team and honor the organization’s roots. The uniforms looked great, Raymond James Stadium looked great and the Bucs beat the Jets, 29-27, when the look first returned to the field last September.

The Bucs then donned the white 1976 throwbacks again in Week 5 when they went out to Seattle. The Seahawks wore their throwbacks for that game, too, making for one of the best uniform matchups in NFL history. And Tampa Bay won that game as well, beating the eventual Super Bowl champions by a score of 38-35.

When that throwback 1976 look was first reintroduced, it was marketed as a “one season only” type of deal to make the 50th season that much more special. The natural assumption was that the 1976 jerseys would be gone again in 2026 and that the team would continue holding its annual creamsicle game. But then Wednesday morning came.

The Bucs made an announcement Wednesday on social media that the 1976 jerseys will be returning in 2026 after all. Tampa Bay will wear the white Bucco Bruce helmets, white and orange jerseys and white pants – an iconic look – on Dec. 6. That’s the Bucs’ Week 13 game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

There hasn’t been official word on whether the 1976 throwback look being worn on Dec. 6 against the Chargers is straight-up replacing the creamsicle game that has been an annual tradition for the last three years. But as the Bucs said in their promotion of this news, the 1976 jersey is “back by popular demand.”

’76 Throwbacks Have Been Kinder To The Bucs Than The Creamsicles

The Bucs’ last season in orange and white was 30 years ago this fall. The 1996 season was the last one for Bucco Bruce and that orange, white and red color scheme, with pewter power taking over and the rebrand to red and pewter coming ahead of the 1997 season. The team eventually brought back the creamsicle look for a throwback game in 2009. It was a victorious return for Bucco Bruce, too, as the Bucs beat the Packers 38-28.

But ever since, it’s been loss after loss in the creamsicle jerseys. The team lost in the orange and white in 2010, 2011 and 2012, falling 28-24 to the Falcons, 38-19 to the Panthers and 35-28 to the Saints, respectively. From there, the NFL’s one-helmet rule kept the Bucs from bringing Bucco Bruce back for a whole decade.

That helmet rule was eventually done away with, leading to the return of the iconic look for the Bucs in 2023. But the long hiatus didn’t result in another victorious re-debut for Bucco Bruce, as Tampa Bay lost 20-6 to Detroit in that year’s creamsicle game. In the last two years, it’s been losses to the division rival Falcons. First, it was a 31-26 defeat in 2024 and then came last year’s Thursday Night Football debacle that saw the Bucs blow a 14-point fourth-quarter lead on their way to a costly 29-28 loss.

Meanwhile, the Bucs went 2-0 in 2025 while wearing the 1976 throwback jerseys. So, while the sample size is far more limited, being undefeated in one throwback look as opposed to 1-6 in the other – with a six-game losing streak – makes it rather easy to understand why the organization might be embracing the former over the latter heading into 2026.

Time will tell if there’s also going to be a creamsicle game in 2026, as there’s still time for the Bucs to unveil their game themes for the upcoming season. But for now, the 1976 jerseys are back by popular demand for the Week 13 game against the Chargers. What do you think, Pewter People?
