The Bucs were over the moon when they selected Rueben Bain Jr. with the 15th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Now we know exactly how much they wanted Bain over any other option available to them. The team recently released a video from their war room during night one of the draft. The video shows the tension leading up to Tampa Bay’s time on the clock.

Bucs Fielded A Trade Offer, But Opted To Stick And Pick Rueben Bain Jr.

In the footage, assistant general manager Mike Greenberg is seen on the phone with another team discussing a possible trade with just a couple of picks left before the Bucs were on the clock at 15. The offer was pick 17 and two fourth-round picks – pick 118 and pick 128 – in exchange for the Bucs’ 15th overall pick as well as pick 195 (a sixth-rounder). Based on who held those picks, we know the offer was from the Detroit Lions.

In the video, Greenberg relays the offer to general manager Jason Licht, who responds that he cannot commit to the trade at that time because of the possibility of Bain falling. Licht’s official stance was “Depending,” meaning it depends on if Bain was available or not. As we now know, he was, and Licht forewent the trade in favor of taking the talented pass rusher out of Miami.

Conflicting Analysis on Trade Package Value

The trade value chart most commonly used by NFL teams is the Jimmy Johnson chart. Named after the Hall of Fame head coach who popularized it while running the Dallas Cowboys in the late 1980s to the early 1990s, that chart is extremely top-heavy, placing the most value at the top of the first round with a steep curve as the draft wears on. Using that chart, the offer from the Lions was as close to even value as the two teams could get given their draft assets. Here is each pick’s value according to the Jimmy Johnson trade value chart:

Pick 15 – 1,050 points
Pick 195 – 13.4 points

Total value of Bucs’ proposed trade package – 1,063.4 points

Pick 17 – 950 points
Pick 118 – 58 points
Pick 128 – 44 points

Total value of Lions’ proposed trade package – 1,052 points

The Johnson chart isn’t the only trade value chart, and other more modern and well-researched charts show that there is greater value in the middle rounds of the draft than Johnson once thought. The Spielberger-Fitzgerald chart, named after former Pro Football Focus analyst Brad Spielber7ger and Over the Cap founder Jason Fitzgerald, shows the Bucs could have picked up plenty of surplus value by moving back two picks and gaining the extra early day-three picks.

Pick 15 – 1,628 points
Pick 195 – 328 points

Total value of Bucs’ proposed trade package – 1,956 points

Pick 17 – 1,564 points
Pick 118 – 578 points
Pick 128 – 541 points

Total value of Lions’ proposed trade package – 2,683 points

The total premium the Lions were offering based on the Spielberger-Fitzgerald chart is 37% – the equivalent of the 89th overall pick by their measure. This closely aligns with my own research on draft pick valuation, which has the offer as a 35% gain in draft value for the Bucs.

Bucs Had Rueben Bain Jr. As A Top Player In Draft

As Tampa Bay fills out their draft board, they clearly tier prospects. And Rueben Bain Jr. was clearly in a tier above everyone else available at 15, with the next tier being nowhere close to him. Pewter Report has discovered that Bain was the fourth-highest rated player on Tampa Bay’s draft board.

Had there been just a couple of players that they saw as similarly graded, the two-spot trade down would have made all the sense in the world. But his talent, in their eyes, was worth well more than the additional draft capital.

Ultimately, Licht opted to stick and pick, with vice president of player personnel Mike Biehl narrating the clip, “Sometimes the best moves are just staying there and making the pick.”
