The second joint practice for the Bucs against the Jaguars saw Tampa Bay come out with a lot more tempo. With each team only wearing shorts and shoulder pads, there wasn’t as much physicality and intensity as there was on day one, but the Bucs brought it as much as they could.

This practice had the Bucs and Jaguars go against each other in the beginning, but then became a glorified walk-through where the Bucs practiced against the Bucs on one field while Jacksonville went against themselves on another.

With that context in place, Pewter Report’s Matt Matera, Scott Reynolds, Bailey Adams, Adam Slivon and Kat Buetel were in attendance at practice. These were the standout players on the offensive side.

Bucs Offensive Studs From Day 17 Of Training Camp

QB Baker Mayfield 

As we’ve seen time and again, anytime Baker Mayfield has a lull in his game or slow practice, he immediately picks it up the next day. That was the case on Wednesday when the first-team offense went to 7 on 7s.

Mayfield immediately fired passes to Tez Johnson and Chris Godwin Jr, setting the tone for the day. He never put ball in harm’s way and made the right reads all morning.

Mayfield’s best throw of the day was when Tampa Bay had to drive down the whole field. He hit a 20-yard completion by the numbers on the rigth side, perfectly threading the needle between the linebackers and safeties coming in. When the Bucs moved closer to the red zone, Mayfield dialed in with touchdowns to Johnson, running back Kenny Gainwell and wide receiver Ted Hurst. Mayfield looked in command throughout the day, picking it up when the offense needed it.

WR Chris Godwin Jr. 

Making an emphatic statement yesterday about the low energy of the Bucs, it was Godwin who took charge in the leading the wide receiver room.

He connected with Baker Mayfield a couple of times on intermediate throws over the middle. That’s been the staple of what he’s done. Of course, he was also on the receiving end of Mayfield’s threading of the needle on that 20-yard completion. Godwin had to jump for it and make the catch, showing he’s still got the athleticism.

WR Tez Johnson 

Johnson seemed to be the player who made a mistake, running the wrong route on Baker Mayfield’s interception yesterday. He made up for it with a crafty touchdown in the red zone on Wednesday.

As he was running a crosser route, Mayfield found him about two yards before the end zone, he made the Jaguars defender miss with a juke and hit pay dirt. Johnson is still getting his legs under him with his return, but he’s trending in right direction.

WR Ted Hurst

What made Hurst stand out was not just the catches he made, it was who he was making the receptions against. With former Heisman Trophy winner and first round pick Travis Hunter covering him, Hurst got his body in front of Hunter in the front of the end zone and boxed him out to catch a touchdown.

It was a lower throw where only he could get it, but considering the size, that wasn’t the easiest to make. Hurst continues to create separation to help him win some matchups.

RB Kenny Gainwell 

Gainwell can really do it all in this offense. With no pads going on, there wasn’t much to see in the run game, but Gainwell looked like another receiver out there as a target for Mayfield. He beat a defender across the middle to score a touchdown in the red zone. He’s going to win a lot of one-on-one’s with his receiving abilities.

Bucs Offensive Duds From Day 17 Of Training Camp

QB Jalon Daniels 

Daniels appeared to be waiting too long to make some of his throws on Wednesday. First, he threw an interception to Jaguars corner Jabbar Muhammad as he was trying to throw it into a tight window to Garrett Greene. It was a 7-on-7 drill, so Daniels wasn’t really supposed to run, and that’s why he took the risk.

The more alarming moment happened on an incomplete pass from Daniels. Tight end Bauer Sharp was breaking open in to the back middle of the end zone. Daniels was too late pulling the trigger, giving Jacksonville enough time to break the play up. Had Daniels thrown it a second or two earlier, it’s a touchdown.

The Bucs are clearly propping up Daniels to be QB2, and surely he’s trying to toe the line of when to take chances but also not making too many mistakes in front of the coaches. It would be useful to work on his decisiveness this week.

WR Matthew Henry 

Just signing with the team yesterday, Henry was in Jacksonville practicing with the Bucs on Wednesday. Tampa Bay needs bodies at receiver and that’s why he’s here. When a player comes to a new team right before the last game of the preseason, they have to be almost perfect to show out and have a chance of at least making the practice squad.

Henry dropped a pass early on across the middle on a Daniels throw. It’s a play that has to be made to give himself a chance, but he wasn’t able to.
