The Bucs returned from their mini-bye and had practice on Wednesday as they prepare for a Week 6 matchup against the Steelers at home. Two team captains were still out, though, as quarterback Baker Mayfield and safety Antoine Winfield Jr. still remained out.

There’s more of a question mark for Mayfield than there is for Winfield. Bucs head coach Todd Bowles said that while Mayfield didn’t practice, they were going to see later in the day if he could grip a football and throw it. Winfield on the other hand is expected to be out for a least another week or two.

Reports have come about that Mayfield is attempting to return for this week’s game, which would be a very quick recovery from a dislocated thumb injury. But is it the right idea? Backup quarterback Jalon Daniels looked solid in the first win of his career, and has a 1-1 record as a stater. Despite a bleak 1-4, the Bucs are only one game out of their own division with a lot still to play for.

Also missing from practice was third string running back Sean Tucker and cornerback Ayden Garnes. Each player ran on a field separately as they attempt to be active for Sunday’s game.

The good news on the injury front is that inside linebacker SirVocea Dennis and cornerback Benjamin Morrison were able to practice in a limited capacity. Morrison has missed the last two games and has dealt with soft tissue injuries through his career, so it’s encouraging that he’s been able to return fast enough.
