For a matchup between a 2-5 team and a 3-4 team, Sunday afternoon’s game between the Bucs and Falcons at Raymond James Stadium carried quite a bit of weight. A win for Tampa Bay would mean a 2-0 record within the NFC South and a half-game deficit in the race for first place in the division. On the flip side, an Atlanta win would mean first place in the South through eight weeks of the season.

The first of two meetings between these two teams was held under gray Tampa skies and heavy rain that persisted throughout the afternoon before finally lightening up in the fourth quarter. The result was a sloppy football game, but one that the Bucs took control of in the first half with 146 rushing yards, three interceptions of Michael Penix Jr. and three field goals from Chase McLaughlin.

Tampa Bay added to its lead with a 90-yard touchdown drive in the third quarter to take a 16-0 advantage into the fourth, then the defense continued to dominate and closed it out from there. The 16-0 victory was Tampa Bay’s first shutout win since Jan. 7, 2024 and first home shutout since Dec. 5, 2004… against the Falcons.

The Bucs ran for 324 yards on the day, setting a new franchise record. Bucky Irving ran for 170 of those yards on 27 carries, averaging 6.3 yards per carry. Meanwhile, Kenny Gainwell added 140 on 24 carries, averaging 5.6 yards per attempt. They became the first Buccaneer duo to rush for 100+ yards each in the same game since Mike Alstott and Warrick done did so 28 years ago.

And, miraculously, with Baker Mayfield finishing the day 0-of-3 passing, the Bucs became the first team since the 1974 Bills to win a game without completing a single pass. The franchise didn’t even exist the last time that happened.

With all of that, the Bucs earned their first back-to-back wins since Weeks 5 and 6 of last season. Not only that, but they earned their first home victory of the season and got within a half-game of the NFC South lead – even at 3-5.

Here’s a recap of all the action from Sunday’s bully ball victory for the Bucs over the Falcons in Tampa:

Bucs 16, Falcons 0

Just as the game began, the light rain that began ahead of kickoff at Raymond James Stadium really intensified into a full-blown downpour. That set the stage for a bizarre first half of football.

The Falcons converted an early fourth-down try in Bucs territory, but a couple of strong run stuffs by the Tampa Bay defense and an incomplete third-down pass (which went off Jacob Parrish’s hands) left the visitors to settle for a 53-yard field goal try from Nick Folk. The kick, however, went wide, keeping the game scoreless after an opening drive of 5:05.

Taking over from its own 43, the Buccaneer offense got going from the jump with a 24-yard run by Bucky Irving that was aided by great blocks from Graham Barton and Luke Goedeke. But after reaching the Atlanta 28-yard line, the drive stalled out with Ted Hurst III dropping a potential touchdown on third down. Still, Chase McLaughlin came on to drill a 46-yard field goal to give the Bucs a 3-0 lead halfway through the first quarter.

Then, things ramped up when the first play of the Falcons’ second possession saw Alex Anzalone pick off a Michael Penix Jr. pass. And with a Drake London personal foul added on, the Bucs took over in the red zone at the 19-yard line with a chance to grab a commanding lead early on.

And just when it looked like they were going to go up 10-0 after Baker Mayfield recovered a fumbled snap, scrambled to his left and pitched the ball out to Irving, Jessie Bates III managed to punch the ball out of Irving’s hands just ahead of the goal line. Instead of a touchdown, it was a touchback and a turnover.

The Tampa Bay defense responded once again, though, with Anzalone coming up with his second interception in two drives. That set the offense up in the red zone again, this time at the Atlanta 20.

However, once again, the offense failed to do much with the field position. The Bucs at least got points the second time around, with McLaughlin connecting on a 34-yard field goal to give them a 6-0 lead.

The Falcons nearly answered on their next drive, as Penix had Kyle Pitts Sr. WIDE OPEN down the field off play-action on 3rd & 2 only to wildly overthrow him. With that, Atlanta had to punt. Not long after, the opening quarter came to an end, and to start the second, Tampa Bay punted the ball back over to the visitors.

Bijan Robinson broke off a long run to get the ball moving for the Falcons on their next drive, but on an eventual 4th & 7, the offense stayed on the field and Penix threw his third interception of the half – this time to Jacob Parrish.

What followed was another methodical, run-heavy drive by the Bucs offense. It was a successful one, too, as it lasted 13 plays and covered 60 yards before eventually ending in a 42-yard McLaughlin field goal after 8:29 was killed off the second-quarter clock. With that, Tampa Bay led 9-0.

A long return by Olamide Zaccheaus on the ensuing kickoff gave the Falcons strong starting field position, but outside of one first down, they did nothing with it. On an eventual 4th & 2, SirVocea Dennis and Josiah Trotter stopped Robinson and got the ball back to Mayfield and the Bucs offense. But there was ultimately nothing left in the half for either side, which meant a 9-0 lead for the home team at the break.

Out of halftime, the Bucs and Falcons traded punts back and forth until right around the seven-minute mark in the third quarter, when Tampa Bay’s run game powered the game’s first touchdown drive.

After taking over at their own 10, Bucky Irving and the Buccaneer offense went to work. After a strong first-down run, Irving broke free for 46 yards into Falcons territory. From there, Kenny Gainwell made some impressive cuts and worked his way down to the 6-yard line with a 28-yard run. Two plays later, Irving found the end zone and made it a 16-0 game.

The Atlanta offense tried to put something together as the third quarter wound down and ended up converting a fourth down to begin the fourth, but soon enough, the Tampa Bay defense stepped up again. This time around, it was Zyon McCollum coming up with an interception of Penix, making it four for the defense on the day.

Gainwell helped Tampa Bay kill some clock the rest of the way, and in the end, it was a 324-yard rushing day for the Buccaneers and a 16-0 shutout win to improve to 3-5 and 2-0 within the NFC South.

As dominant as the Buccaneer run game was, Todd Bowles’ defense can’t go underappreciated for its efforts in the shutout win. Michael Penix Jr. finished the afternoon 8-of-24 for 125 yards (76 of which came on one play) and four interceptions. Alex Anzalone came up with two of those, while Jacob Parrish and Zyon McCollum hauled in the others.

Atlanta was 0-for-12 on third downs on the day, too. That’s just pure dominance from this defense, which has blossomed into one of the league’s very best in 2026.

The Bucs (3-5) will now head out on the road for a Week 9 Sunday Night Football game against the Bears (5-2) in Chicago. Kickoff for that contest – Tampa Bay’s last before a Week 10 bye – is set for 8:20 p.m.
