In a sports locker room cliche-filled world, Bucs tackle Demar Dotson is a breath of fresh air.

Dotson, the longest current tenured Buccaneer, doesn’t hold back his thought often, and Sunday, after the Buccaneers tough overtime loss to the Raiders, the Bucs right tackle was blunt in his assessment.

“The defense fought so hard in that overtime to give us an opportunity,” Dotson said. “We didn’t gain many yards when we got the ball with so much great field position. We’ve got to do a better job than that. You have to put it on the offense’s shoulders that when the game was on the line and we needed it the most, we didn’t get it done.”

The Raider came into Sunday’s game with the NFL’s worst-ranked defense, giving up 430 yards per game, yet the Buccaneers only managed 270 yards. Dotson didn’t blame any teammate specifically, but felt there were opportunities squandered.

“At the end of the day we just didn’t move it,” Dotson said. “To go three-and-out … I think Jameis had good protection. At the end of the day we didn’t capitalize on it.”

The Raiders ended up setting an NFL record with 23 accepted penalties (the Bucs declined a handful of others) yet it still wasn’t enough for the Buccaneers to leave Raymond James Stadium with a victory, something that wasn’t lost on Dotson.

“They were trying to give us the game, man,” Dotson said. “They were handing us the game with those missed field goals and all of those penalties, and we didn’t take it, man. That’s the craziest thing I’ve ever seen. That’s a good football team, and to have so many penalties, they were trying to say, ‘Hey, Bucs … here’s the football game.’ We didn’t capitalize on that. When we needed to the most we didn’t capitalize.

“If it’s not finding a way to win football games or finding a way to lose football games – you can put it in that category. At the end of the day we didn’t find a way to win the football game when we needed to the most. We had every opportunity to win it. We had the ball in overtime at the 40-yard line (42-yard line), and not be able to get 25 yards to get in field [goal] position is not acceptable.”
