Every year all 32 NFL teams nominate a player for the distinguished “Salute To Service Award,” presented by the USAA, the Official Media Appreciation Sponsor of the NFL, and the league itself.
The award honors a league member who demonstrates an exemplary commitment to honoring and supporting the military community. Last year Vincent Jackson, well known for his military outreach and support, received the nomination and ultimately the award.
Representing the Buccaneers this year is Clinton McDonald.
Like Jackson, McDonald has a deep family history of military service. His grandfather served in the Korean War; his father was a former Air Force engineer and a Vietnam War Veteran, as is his uncle. McDonald’s brother is currently active duty Air Force, showing his strong family ties and support for the military.
McDonald also served as the honorary guest speaker at the Buccaneers second annual General H. Norman Schwarzkopf Military Family of the Year Awards and has honored wounded warriors at the 2016 Invictus Games, held in Orlando. At all Bucs events, the 6-foot-2 defensive tackle makes sure to spend extra time with military members.
Finalist among the 32 nominees will be announced in January. The recipient will be recognized at the “6th Annual NFL Honors” awards show in Houston on FOX on Saturday, February 4, the night before the Super Bowl.
