After a one-point loss to the New York Giants and rookie quarterback Daniel Jones on Sunday, Bruce Arians spoke to the media on Monday.

Arians highlighted the production from the offense, the lackluster play of the defense — following a great performance in Carolina — and the last-second miss from kicker Matt Gay that ended the game.

(Opening Statement)
“Nothing really changed after watching the film. Defensively, I thought our front seven played extremely well, obviously Shaq [Barrett] had a big game. Our back end probably had their worst game of the year and it was as simple of a plan as it could be. We lost leverage, didn’t line up properly a couple of times and gave them huge plays that shouldn’t have been made. We’ll get it corrected. Offensively, that was probably as good of a half as we could play, and a solid fourth quarter. In the third quarter we just didn’t convert third downs that were very manageable so that’s something we’ll address. Running the ball inside the five was another key. In the kicking game, I was very disappointed. We had opportunities for punt returns and just didn’t do a great job of blocking their gunners and we have to do a better job of getting more physical out there in our vice because we had opportunities to get the ball inside the 50 a couple of times on punt returns and didn’t get it. As far as the kick, when you look at it, we substituted, they substituted late, the umpire is standing over the ball, I’m not using a timeout at that point in time, the play is not going to get run. So we took the penalty, moved the ball over and he’s got to make that kick and we don’t get it done. Everyone feels a whole lot better if he makes that kick but that’s part of it. We’ll bounce back and be ready to go Wednesday.”

(On what allowed Daniel Jones to score the last touchdown)
“Yeah, we ran a stunt inside and Vita [Vea] went all the way over the top and Ndamukong Suh doesn’t get across the middle to stop the quarterback.”

(On if that’s just on bad execution)
“That’s just feeling like he could get around another block. He was making good penetration so he went one gap wider and Suh didn’t get across his face and we had everybody’s back turned, doubling all the receivers.”

(On if there was any mentality differences coming out in the first half and the second half)
“Defensively we gave up a touchdown and a field goal in the first two possessions of the game and the half, so we didn’t come out, especially in the secondary, ready to play either time. Offensively we were ready to go.”

(On if the comeback can be attributed to being a young team)
“That’s a good excuse, I don’t like excuses. We talked about it at halftime, I did a lot of screaming. I’m a little horse because of halftime, for that reason, and it just didn’t get done.”

(On if the Giants changed their gameplan when Saquon Barkley went out)
“You don’t ever not want a great player out there, but they were going to throw the ball anyway. They were down, they’re weren’t going to run the ball that much, they were not having any success so it’s just a matter of our secondary covering them and we didn’t get it done.”

(On if the third down play by the goal line was a read option)
“It was a run-pass option. We had a run, pass and quarterback option. [Jameis Winston] made the right decision, we just didn’t get it blocked properly on the front side. In Byron’s defense too, when you run the ball that well, six plays and you go 50 yards, you’re going to run it again. I picked that play, I should have stayed out of it.”

(On the thought of throwing it in the end zone)
“You never know what coverage you’re getting so it would have to be an audible, which was part of the RPO, but the RPO wasn’t set up for that.”

(On what the Giants changed in coverage in the second half)
“I think we just ran the ball a lot more. When we threw it it was pretty successful, we had a 40-yard pass and another 30-yard pass. The running game became very successful so that’s what we’re going to stick with.”

(On taking the delay of game penalty before Gay’s kick)
“It wasn’t a matter of intentionally taking the penalty. When we run our guys out, they get to substitute, so the umpire is standing over the ball and the clock is going five, four, three… and I’m not going to waste a timeout and then have 13 seconds. We didn’t go out there to intentionally take a penalty but when I saw the umpire standing over the ball, the last thing I wanted was a 10-second runoff or confusion. Set it up, put it in the middle of the field and kick an extra point.

K Matt Gay – Photo by: Cliff Welch/PR

(On if he still felt confident in Gay heading into that kick)
“He had just made five in a row, so yeah, we felt very, very comfortable.”

(On the blocked extra point)
“They got some penetration over our guard and it was a low kick because he kicked the first one so high he tried to kick the next one low, being a rookie. Just hit it.”

(On if that distance has been trouble for him)
“That and the right hash. That’s where, when you chart him back all the way through, those short kicks on the right hash. So we moved it to the middle for him.”

(On fixing that issue)
“Go out there and kick the s*** out of it from the right hash until you’re comfortable and he’s been doing that. He’s been doing it really well.

(On avoiding it becoming a mental issue, given what’s happened in the past with kickers)
“That’s one of those glass-half-empty things, that history s***. This is a new team, this is our team, just go kick.”

(On what he says to fans who are mad at Gay)
“You paid your money, say whatever you’re going to say. He isn’t going anywhere.”

(On if there was a coverage bust on the long gain during the Giants’ final drive)
“For 40 yards? Yes. And the coaches are screaming the play from the sideline. That’s disappointing.”

(On if he believes in curses, specifically with kicking)
“No, no. It’s just finding a way to win games. We found a way to win in Carolina, we didn’t find a way to win against San Francisco, we didn’t find a way to win against New York. Well we found a way, we just didn’t get it done. You can’t say enough about the two-minute drive to get him there. That’s getting lost, Mike [Evans’] day is getting lost, Shaq’s day is getting lost, all because we missed a kick. There was some great performances and there were some poor ones too, and the kicker was one of those poor ones.”

(On if he expected Barrett to have these performances coming in one a one-year deal)
“I don’t think anyone could totally realize that would happen but you saw things on tape and he was going to get opportunities so he’s made the most of them.”

(On the combination between interior pressure and Barrett’s performance)
“Normally if the quarterback is back there jacking the ball off and he gets a sack then it’s coverage, but he’s getting some quick sacks, he’s whipping guys fast and that’s all him. He’s got a good delayed move and he’s got a nice toolbox of moves and as teams get used to him and see him, I think he’s got a few more that we haven’t even seen yet. Carl [Nassib] is starting to do a good job but we’re getting some good interior pressure. Kevin [Minter] had some good blitzes up the middle that pushed him out to him so yeah, it’s a combination but he’s whipping his guy enough times.”

(On if that comes from the talent Barrett’s played around in Denver)
“Yeah, he’s studied other guys and he’s got his own moves but you need to have three or four if you’re going to be elite and he’s showing it.”

(On the message to the team coming back into the building)
“We had our best practice of the year last Tuesday and I expect to have a better one Wednesday.”

(On Jason Pierre-Paul)
“He’s just progressing right on time. He’s been in and out a bunch”

(On passing more in the red zone)
“Inside the 10-yard line we have to do a better job throwing the football. At the 20, we’re scoring a lot of touchdowns but inside the 10, where we were pretty good, we’ve gotten average real fast. So we had some runs we liked. Could it be conservative? Not if it’s just a run, but there’s always an RPO involved.”

(On what he wants the team to learn from this loss)
“You learn a hell of a lot more by almost losing than you do losing.”

  1. Yup. Bucs need to gear up and prepare for their next opponent. No time to cry when the cream of the crop of the NFC is up next. The Rams are the elite team of the NFC and will bring their A game for four quarters. Bucs must prepare.

    • This quote says it all from Arians: “I think we just ran the ball a lot more. When we threw it it was pretty successful, we had a 40-yard pass and another 30-yard pass. The running game became very successful so that’s what we’re going to stick with.”

He admits they took the foot off the gas. They started running because it was “very successful.” Really? 3 points in the second half is very successful? Reality was is they saw the INT from Winston, and put their heads in the sand thinking, “the defense will win it for us.” Only when they were in trouble did they really open it up again, and with the miss, it was too late. Typical NFL coaching – play to protect the lead. Only team that does not do that is the Patriots until the fourth quarter. Another reason they win so much, and just another reason the Bucs lose ones they have no reason to lose.

  2. Vea was getting his back bent backwards all day by number 71, Fredster understand it ok when an O lineman gets bent backwards, But when a D lineman has his back bent head behind lower back he is being dominated.
Daniel Jones ran right down Vea lane to score a winning TD.
Do not blame me, watch the film, “Bowles must be in panic” watching Veta film.

We had 3 opportunities within the last couple of months to pick up quality De;s. But we don’t need’em right? And where was Mr. Suh yesterday? I spotted both him and Vea making their cash..on their backs quite a few times.

I’m sorry but I don’t share Bruce’s optimism with Gay. I have no faith in Gay at all. Perhaps shell shocked from all issues with kickers but will see I guess.

    • Matt Gay missed the kick at the end, but it was the Bucs secondary that allowed a rookie QB in his first start achieve a QB rating of 120+ and pile on 32 points. The lack of adjustment in coverage by the defensive coaches in the 3rd quarter is what lost this game. Bucs secondary cannot have another game like this one.

          • Bob he has 8 solo and 6 combined tackles, facing double teams. It is how Shaquil Barrett is getting free and so many sacks on the outside of the line. When they double team Vea they have no one to double team Barrett, and the sacks result. Pretty simple really. Oh, and by the way, Barrett only has 12 solo hits – just 8 of them are sacks. How many hits do you expect a lineman to get? Ndamukong Suh? Has 5. William Gholston has 9. Arians loves him because he can play three different positions in the 3-4 and is very versatile. Do you actually do any research before commenting, besides making uninformed guesses on numbers and what they mean?

  8. I actually thought Vea, and the whole DLine played pretty well…holding Barkley to 1.2 yards per carry is quite a huge accomplishment, and throughout the week “stopping Barkley” was consistently the message. The problem as I see it was that we were totally unprepared for what the Ginats would do in the case that we did stop Barkley….it seemed our preparation was for a game plan of, “run Barkley again and again no matter what”.

Is that Bowles or Arians to blame?…maybe…or maybe, as I surmise, the blame really belongs on Jason Licht for having 5 years to improve our secondary to the point where they could, at a minimum, hold a rookie QB and some dude named Sterling Shepherd to an average game…they could not even accomplish that.

Right now Brate does not seem to fit what they’re trying to do and yes we could have used his cap space to sign a decent RT. This is another BA problem not a Licht problem because BA was given control over the roster.

My hope is that Gay’s missed FG at the end doesn’t permanently affect his confidence because he’s been pretty solid otherwise. • True….but NO just won in Seattle with their backup QB; CAR just won with their backup QB; ATL still has its pro bowl QB. We lost (arguably…but not much) the two easiest games we’re going to play all year…both at home – the 49ers had their QB back after a year off with a knee, who had not looked recovered going into (or indeed in) the game….and had their big off season acquisition thrown out of the game in the first half. The Giants benched their pro bowl QB to start a rookie who had never thrown an NFL pass…and had the best RB in the league leave the game in the first half with an injury.

True, the season is not over….but the road only gets much more difficult from here on in. If we can’t beat the 9ers or Giants in those games, should we realistically expect to beat anyone else? I’m sure we will, but the road is very, very uphill now.

I’m thrilled that the Bucs scored 31 points, but if they had passed to Evans every play, they’d have scored 40. As a columnist for the local paper said: “Jameis Winston seems paralyzed by indecision at times. He’s so worried about throwing interceptions, he holds the ball too long and gets sacked. That’s bad enough. What makes it worse is he’s still throwing too many interceptions. His 10 sacks are tied for seventh in the NFL, and his four interceptions are tied for third.”

    • You shouldn’t have to score 40 to sustain an 18 point lead at home there, chief. Putting up 31 at home against the Giants is way, way more than enough to win in the NFL. So were the 2 games against Atlanta last year where Winston totaled 800 yards and 8 tds but lost both games. That’s what happens when your defense gives up the booty. Super basic football philosophy.

But if you’re Jameis Winston, gotta be perfect!

There was plenty of positive stuff in the game, but I get a distinct feeling that the Coaching is starting to look a little like a snake without a head. The First Half Offense looked completely different than the second half. Were the plays being called by two different people? There is no denying that our secondary took a step backward yesterday. Thank goodness for Shaq Barret and Rojo having great games. Winston was fine until the Interception. The Schedule looks tough ahead. I wonder if we can even get close to 4-4 by the halfway point.

Had he done that, the parting of the sea doesn’t happen, and Jones can’t sail into the sunset. We were out coached, out played, and you can deny it all you want, but Jones out played Winston. Yes a rookie getting his first start on the road out played our fifth year sensation. Licht can’t draft worth a shit, he can’t find a coach who can win, and he has a new contract because our owners are clueless. The excuse train is leaving the station, all aboard, sorry, not me. I’ll watch the train derail, and crash, I’m not getting on it. I wanted Licht gone, wanted the whole thing blown up, but we’ve been fed more of the same shit as always. I’m done eating this crap. Regurgitating the same shit over and over makes you a troll. Follow a different Team. Follow a different sport. Hell, move to a different city but stop bitching about the same thing. We have a new coaching team, new players all learning a new system. Being critical is one thing but you are just saying negative shit now for your own therapy. You’ve turned in to a douchey troll like Bob.

  19. Bowles and BA lost this game for the Bucs! Sure, Gay missed the field goal that could’ve won the game but Bowles and BA failed to make the necessary adjustments to prevent the defensive breakdown that allowed a 2nd half comeback by Dan Marino, I mean rookie QB Jones! The game should have never come down to a last second field goal to win game if they had done their jobs! I’m just saying…

  20. While everyone is beating up Gay for missing a FG, and two extra points, how come no one is blaming the moron who drafted him? You know the same fool who moved up in the second round for a failure kicker, also used a fifth rounder on this guy you all want gone. Was Santos that bad last year we needed to draft a kicker again? Yeah bring in another leg to compete, but drafting another kicker? That’s your boy Jason Licht, the GM with the worst winning percentage in Buc history. How come no blame for the drafter, instead of the draftee?

  21. Mike Evans was the 5th pick in the first round, even an idiot like Licht can’t screw up a pick that high. However Aron Donald was picked after Evans, and you can find receivers in later rounds, but shouldn’t pass on a DT that good. So giving credit for Licht drafting Evans isn’t really saying much is it?

    • Gerald McCoy publicly whined like a baby over the possibility of drafting Aaron Donald. Remember that?

    • Surfer how is arron donald doing this year? Oh thats right he has ZERO sacks, which makes him as useful as toilet paper right now. And gerald didnt want him here on that draft, thats apparently obvious to everyone but you. And to say you can get a reviever like big Mike in any round ,might be the dumbest thing you’ve typed, and thats saying a lot.

  23. We see eye to eye on very few things surferdudes, but I was calling for Licht to get fired last year .His 2016 draft was a disaster and is haunting this team. When he had a chance to sign the best kicker in the NFL, Robbie Gould, he didn’t even look at him.

  24. DumbAss, I tried to explain a concept to you, something that I know is difficult for your feeble little mind to grasp. I don;t know and I don;t care how many tackles he has.
I do know when I watch him play he is usually pushing two OL backward into the pocket and he’s not getting “bent back.” LOL. You said you saw something completely different than what happened on that TD play.
You are either stupid with your blind hate or a drunk, neither of which is good.
Go back to the Broncos who are 0-3.

  26. Well at least this clears up PR’s infatuation with the “intentional” delay of game penalty at the end of the game. It seemed fairly obvious that after the big play to Evans that there was too much going on to rush the next play. In the end, Arians allowed the team to take a 5 yard penalty so they could get the right personnel on, call the proper next play, and save the time out. But PR took that “intentional” comment after the game too far and too literally and spent most of the podcast on the topic, as there is always more to the story when you’re in the heat of battle. Hopefully they can ease up on BA for that particular issue!

  27. I went silent? Your a fucking idiot. Your stupid ass question was already answered and explained suck-ass___.

Its called I have a life and don’t need to respond to you immediately. In fact I’m not going to respond to you again dipshit. Not one expert or pundit would say Vea and Suh aren’t doing a great job and shutting run down and taking up blocks. LB’s get most of solo tackles in 3-4 not interior lineman. Learn what 3-4 defense is and how solo tackles isn’t a stat anyone gives a shit about except you because you desperately want to be right, you hate Vea and you hate Bucs.

You are a troll and you sir can go fuck your self had enough of your dumb-ass remarks.
