The Bucs were upset in an embarrassing, 29-19 loss to the Washington Football Team on Sunday. For the most part it was the same reason that has led to Tampa Bay’s other two losses – penalties and turnovers. However, there was a third element that cost the Bucs their second loss in a row – effort.

Head coach Bruce Arians spoke with the media on Monday and indicated that there were some players who were overconfident and believed they could just show up and win the game.

“When you practice as well as we did last week, I think they assume they were just going to go out and play good,” Arians said. “That’s something we’ll address. Just because you had a great week of practice, you got to show up on Sunday.”

There’s a specific way that Arians would like his team to play, and he was very complimentary of linebacker Devin White for his 18-tackle, two sack performance. White played with immense passion on Sunday and he wants more guys in the locker room to provide play with the same emotion.

“If everybody played with the passion and energy that Devin played with, we wouldn’t have any problems,” Arians said. “He should’ve been the player of the week with the game he just had and the way he played the game. We’ll use that as an example for everybody else to play better.”

Arians was asked point blank whether he felt there were players who were lacking passion and energy. He was blunt with his response.

“Totally,” Arians said.

The Bucs have a lot of work to do before their next game on Monday night at home against the New York Giants (3-6). With a 6-3 record and still on track for the playoffs, the Bucs have lost two in a row and are trending in the wrong direction after losing to unheralded quarterbacks like Trevor Siemian and Taylor Heinicke in consecutive weeks.

Arians didn’t reveal what his message was to the team following the game. But judging by his lack of a response gives the sense that it wasn’t a positive, lighthearted speech.

“I think those talks are very personal between me and the team,” Arians said. “Not for everybody else.”
