Appearing on the Rich Eisen radio show on Tuesday, Bucs head coach Bruce Arians confirmed that Tampa Bay would have brought quarterback Jameis Winston back had Tom Brady – or Teddy Bridgewater – not been signed as a free agent.

Arians also noted that he has personally reached out to two teams to vouch for Winston’s talent and work ethic.

Arians has been honest about his evaluations so far so I have no reason to doubt him. Time to turn the page and for this franchise to move on toward bigger and better things ahead.

Lets just say I’m glad we got Brady. Its the perfect situation. Brady will move on and play great ball here for a couple years. Thats your “Winston reset” for the franchise.

We bring in Teddy and he can’t play better and it would be probably a 3-4 year drumbeat how BA screwed up and the fanbase would be going crazy.

Brady is the perfect move for the current and future of the franchise.

Our franchise is in good hands with Bruce Arians and Jason Licht. I feel the exact same way. Jameis definitely wasn’t my first choice and so ecstatic to get Brady! This is gonna be a really good team now.

Arians confirms what I thought..Those last 2 heartbreaking games where Jameis threw those interceptions sealed his fate. And I believe he gave Jameis a decent eval to other teams. A Year as a backup is going to do Jameis all the good in the world. He will be back starting for some team one day. Arians has always said he could still win with Jameis. Its just the fans here are desperate for a winner. And our stadium attendance has looked like..Mr Corona himself. Our fans deserve to see what winning looks. I hope it all works out for us… Read more »

I don’t like Arians talking about this. It feels dirty. We signed Brady and that alone speaks volume. Adding that Winston was plan “C” was unnecessary. We didn’t need to know that Winston was really further away from our plans. Then Arians CYA by saying, “You’ll never find a harder worker than Jameis. It just didn’t work out for us.” That’s all BS. We fans aren’t stupid. Brady is an upgrade and Arians failed to turn Winston into a franchise QB. Arians failed so bad that he was plan C. I’d rather not tarnish players once we moved on. I think you are reading too much in it. Arians is always a straight shooter. He was before Tampa, and he has been the same in Tampa. The fact he detailed his thought process is a continuation of that. Nothing more, nothing less. It is probably true Winston works hard. It is also true he is talented. Just with that talent comes a slew of turnovers – which everyone already knows. The lack of talent is in his thought process – nothing more, nothing less. He is not able to determine when a pass is too risky and forces it… Read more »

We will see, but I’d bet good money Bridgewater is not a good starter and Panthers move on from him after year or so.

He should sign with the Jets and battle Sam Darnold for the starting job, his boy Perriman just signed with them.

Charlie, I was thinking the same thing. The Jets would be the one really good opportunity for him to compete for the starting position. Winston will be able to make throws Darnold simply can’t make.

I am understanding no team is interested in Winston as a starter……………
and no team has reached out as backup as of today.
If he was wanted he would already be signed somewhere.

Bob, not true. Arians said other teams are inquiring about him. However, I bet you are right about no one has inquired about him as a starter. However I bet the other teams may be interested in him as a backup if he takes a pay cut and accepts the role. However, I bet he won’t take it – and will be out of the NFL.

Actually I think the Bears and the Colts are a better fir for Winston.
Trubinksky is a disaster waiting to happen and those 20 INT’s were no fluke by Rivers.
He’s always had an uncommon knack for tossing an INT at the worst time.
What I didn’t like was Arians judging Winston’s play during the last two games.
Seriously, with his top two WR’s out with hamstrings and playing with a fractured thumb you put that much stock in his final two games. Geeeesh.

Hockey Duckie I actually agree with what you said. Except for the part that BA failed to turn Jameis into a franchise QB. No offense but the guy has been through 3 HC’s, and finally got an actual good HC that knows QB’s very well. Never had bad QB play under his watch in his entire career. And Jameis bottoms out and turns the ball over 35 times. Sorry but BA can’t read the defense and take what the defense gives him for Jameis. This has been JW MO since college. Dude just protect the football. It’s just that simple.… Read more »

I can’t wait to see where Winston signs. If he goes to a team like the Steelers, and I believe he will, he’ll be another QB in a long line of QB’s that the fan base laments the Bucs moving on from.

The things I like about Bruce Arians are his bluntness and honesty. His unsolicited calls sound like an attempt to help, not hinder, Jameis in finding a spot. My prediction is he ends up in Pittsburgh.

The last 2 games were the final nails in Winston’s coffin as a Buccaneer. Arians evalution of Winston was based on 5 years of tape and one year of eyes on evaluation. Those 5 years of tape are there for every NFL GM to see. Winston is careless with the football. Winston wasn’t able to decipher at times what the Defense was giving him. How many times did we Winston throw into triple coverage just to see a TE or WR#3 wide open away from where the ball was thrown? Rate this item:Thumb UpThumb DownSubmit Rating+2-1 Rating: +1. It appears he’s holding out for a starting QB position. From all indications Winston isn’t willing to take a back up position. Then again no teams GM has stepped forward to even offer Winston anything. The Patriots and Chargers are the only 2 teams with obvious openings. The Patriots don’t have much cap space left (5.6 million) they need 8-9 million just to sign their rookie pool. The Chargers have publicly said the are rolling with Tyrod Taylor and by all indications they will be drafting their future QB1 early in the draft. BigSombrero amongst others have suggested Pittsburgh as… Read more »

Winston just not delivered, he blew up too many games, came with a lot of baggage into the league.

Jamie’s could be a great backup on a team. Imagine your team is down 20 and you have a dink and dunk qb who doesnt run the 2 min drill well. Good spot to send in jameis. He absolutely has the ability to score quick. If he happens to have the bad day then you lost but you were way down anyway. For many years we all knew when the bucs were down by a lot that it was game over. We never had an explosive offense till winston. He will find a spot somewhere and hopefully he gets better.… Read more »

I am surprised that Arian’s would reveal his battle plan at QB, these things are usually left unsaid in the public eye. I am also surprised that he would have Bridgewater rated that high with his style of offense, Bridgewater has only thrown 38 TD’s in his career, Winston almost had that in a season. 38 TD’s with 25 Int’s sounds like a another guy who doesn’t do a good job of taking care of the football.
