Here are some of the best Bucs quotes following their the team’s training camp practice on Tuesday, August 3 at the AdventHealth Training Center.

Bucs head coach Bruce Arians on Lavonte David’s absence from practice again

“Yeah, the only guy that I let have another was Lavonte [David]. I didn’t want him on that turf. We monitored some guys reps on the turf today that were actually practicing. The emphasis was on a lot of young guys today anyway. We schedule all that out with the trainers and the sports science staff. It’s just rest. He doesn’t need to practice that much. He’s played enough football, he doesn’t need a whole lot of practice.”

“I think this is really good. I think preseason games and what we’re doing right now – guys that don’t come in in shape, it’s their own fault anymore. I mean, they’ve got everything handed to them to be in shape. So if their ‘give-a-s–t’ meter don’t run hot enough, that’s telling you something as a coach. I love what we did in the spring with our veterans and gave all our attention to our younger players. Because we have to have young player development [and] it has to come in the spring. And then pay attention to it, like today was a young player development day. There’s just so many fringe guys and you don’t know what they can really do, so you put them in some pressure situations. Not always is there a pressure situation in a preseason game. You may be down 20, you may be up 20 and it’s not the same. To see how they react.”

Bucs head coach Bruce Arians on if the team did anything to celebrate Tom Brady’s 44th birthday

“No, just a couple guys said, ‘Happy Birthday.’ We couldn’t get anyone in the building to surprise him coming out of a cake, so COVID screwed that one up. Other than that, it was just a normal day.”

Bucs RG Alex Cappa on not being able to play in the Super Bowl

“Obviously, I would have loved to be out there. I was trying to do everything I could, but it’s a new season and we’re rolling on a new one. We’re just trying taking it day-by-day now. Obviously I would have loved to have been out there, but it’s a new season and we’re onto the next one. I’m happy for the guys too, it’s still a freaking exciting time.”

Bucs WR Chris Godwin on having Antonio Brown on the team for a full, 17-game schedule

“I think the sky is the limit, not just for him but for the entire group man – I’m sure he’s excited to be here, to be in a training camp again. I think you guys are starting to see some of that – he’s a showman and he likes to make plays. Seeing him run around, he’s still explosive, he can still run all day – it really helps having a guy like that with so much experience and that is so explosive. Like I said the sky is the limit for the group, I’m excited to see where we go.”

Bucs WR Chris Godwin on what it meant to him for QB Tom Brady to continue to throw to him despite a late-season ‘slump’

“It meant a lot – it just spoke to how much he trusts me that even in a down moment or a little slump, ‘You’re one of my guys, I’m going to keep going to you because I know that you’re going to make the play.’ For me personally, just fighting and digging to pull myself out of that little hole, it’s what you have to do. It’s about holding yourself accountable, it’s about perseverance, it’s about pulling yourself up and getting ready or the team – because at the end of the day, I just want to be there to make plays for my team and be accountable, be a reliable guy for them. So, to be able to make those plays in Green Bay that helped send us to the Super Bowl, that meant the world to me. That’s something I’m going to forever cherish and those moments throughout the playoffs are ones that are going to help me continue to grow as a player.”

Bucs WR Tyler Johnson on the trust between he and Tom Brady

“If you stay ready, you never have to get ready. Just to be able to have him trust me – after a game I went up and told him, ‘I appreciate you for trusting me like that. I’m going to make this play.’ But it doesn’t stop. I come out here every day wanting to earn everybody in the building’s trust. That’s big for me, I want them to be able to trust me with anything, knowing I can get the job done. I’m going to continue to come in here and give my best each and every day and leave it all out there on the field.”

Bucs WR Tyler Johnson on what he learned from watching QB Tom Brady

“He’s very coachable. He definitely knows everybody on the team. Great guy – it’s a blessing to be around him, one of the greats. It’s just so cool to see when he coaches you up on the little things. He studies every player. He knows the ins and outs and what to do and what not to do. It just a blessing to be in this position and to be around him.”
