On a tour in England to promote the Bucs London game against the Panthers in October, tight end Cameron Brate caught up with Nate Burleson of the NFL Network to discuss this upcoming season.

Amongst saying what it’s been like playing for new coach Bruce Arians, Brate went on to explain why people shouldn’t sleep on the Bucs this year, and why he believes they will be a surprise this year.

“You never what’s going to happen,” Brate said. “Look at the Eagles a couple of years ago. Everyone was saying they weren’t going to be good, they were picked last in the division, 6-10 the last year and they won the Super Bowl. Everyone’s got a chance, last year was last year.

We have so much talent, I think there’s just so much excitement in Tampa, I think we’re going to surprise some people this year.”

  3. Eagles were 7-9 the year before they won the Super Bowl. 7-9 the year before that. And then 10-6 the two previous seasons before that.

Pretty different from what is in Tampa.

If I had a nickel for every time a player or coach sold this team to the fans since 2009, I’d be filthy rich.

  5. On offense, they are a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses.

On defense, they will be much better against the run and aggressive with exotic blitzes vs the pass.

On special teams, all phases of the kicking game should improve.

  7. Ok guys here’s the real deal..and many of you don’t like hearing the truth..And thats ok. Sooo the only surprise our Bucs are gonna give us is perhaps an 8-8..ok maybe 9-7 at best. And don’t get it twisted..this is will be a nice surprise to those of us in the know. This team will not vie for a championship this season..not with the current roster we have. You got like 6, maybe 7 contenders in the league. Thats it. I do think the team will improve. But if you are even hoping for a superbowl? Give me the name of your supplier cause..

  8. As always gonna come down to injuries more than anything. They stay healthy 8 or 9 wins is very possible. Anything is possible, but doubt with all the change etc they can do much better than that.

I would bet they are closer to 9 wins than 5 though.

  9. When I look at this season’s schedule I see 6 wins. They are against the 49ers, Giants, Saints, Cardinals, Lions and Falcons. Anything more than 6 wins would surprise me.

  10. Let me see the final roster before my inconsequential prediction! When roster is down to final 45… is it still 45???…then we can take a guesstimate as to total wins! With all the craziness in the political world… I would like to see the Bucs… shock the sporting world…let’s do this Bucs! Surely on this sentiment there is agreement on this here Bucfan board right?!

  11. Awful O line & Avg. running backs. Those two weaknesses will impact our Inj. Report starting with Training camp. Heck Jpp suffered what could be a career ending Inj. in the OFF season. This team has long Snake bit history. All that & a bad schedule. 10 wins & 1 play off win could one of the greatest team accomplishments in NFL history. This is possible but highly unlikely. My biggest wish. 6 wins or less is my nightmare but more likely than ten wins.

  15. I have no expectations of us going to the Superbowl this year. I especially do not want us to overachieve, miraculously find ourselves in the Superbowl, get our butts handed to us and come away embarrassed and feeling just as bad as if we had gone 6 and 10 after all.

The next time we appear in the “Big Dance” I want us bloodied from a dog fight in the NFC South so that we will come home with the Lombardi and then celebrate madly down Dale Mabry Highway.

Having said that I will say again that the goal is always the Super Bowl. Setting your sights on anything less is unacceptable. I don’t care how many nasty seasons we have endured since 2002 we should not lower our standards either.

Brate’s example of Philadelphia is well taken. We long suffering Buc fans should take courage. The best example for us I can think of is the Chicago Cub fans over so many generations between World Series championships.

Realism is realism and Fandom is fandom. Perk up Buccaneer fans. I see no reason for lack of optimism this year. I had high hopes the last two years because I saw a lot of talent here already. Last year I became fully convinced that our greatest problem was a failure in the coaching staff under Koetter by mid season. This conclusion had nothing to do with how much I liked him or not.

With all of the changes this year so far, I feel that I would be foolish to put forth any predictions yet.

  16. I like Brate, and he was a very productive TE for us. I wonder how he will factor in an offense that hasn’t used TE’s much in the past and now has a star TE in Howard?

  17. There are some subtle differences between teams like the Eagles and the Bucs. I know Scott & Co don’t think the Bucs have underinvested in the OL during Licht’s tenure as GM but per PFF…

“Philadelphia has earned top-ten team pass- and run-blocking grades in each of the last three seasons and PFF data suggests that they will accomplish this feat again as they enter the 2019 season with the top-ranked offensive line in the NFL.”

    https://www.profootballfocus.com/news/pro-nfl-offensive-line-rankings-all-32-teams-units-entering-2019

The surprise could end up being Brate gets traded for OL help. I’d hate to see him go but it was also irresponsible of Licht to allocate that many resources to the TE position. Running a football team is all about balance and trade-offs, and continually investing to have a strong core, it’s not Fantasy Football

  18. @matador Brate is already counted against the cap for this year. His contract was guaranteed on March 17th. He won’t be traded for anything by anyone this year. Maybe next year though?

  19. I think it’s way too early to predict anything regarding the upcoming season this year. Simply because we have a whole new coaching staff, including a head coach that has won “Coach of the Year” twice, taking over at the helm of a team that has a lot of talent which has not been utilized correctly in the past. That’s a recipe for strong possibilities! Then you have to factor in what hardships our opponents will face this off-season and up coming season, anything can happen. So enjoy a hopeful off-season while you can Buc Fans! Anything can happen any give Sunday!

  20. I’ve said many times that all NFL teams are basically the same, so at this point, all teams have a chance at being the 2019 surprise. One of our problems over the years has clearly been attitude, or should I say the lack of ‘tude, confidence and of course swagger. The players’ and many of us fans’ goals and expectations have been nowhere near those of teams like the Patriots, Saints and my home town Steelers who are disappointed if they only make the play-offs without getting a ring. So what did Bruce Arians do when he arrived? He focused on the mindset and set the goal of winning a championship. Why sell ourselves short before the season even begins? Why not us? 1979 “Worst to First” poster hanging on my wall is a constant reminder.
