Latest Bucs Headlines

As the free agency period has come and gone, Pro Days are starting to wrap up and teams are completing their 30 prospect visits, we can start to really see a clearer picture of what teams’ intentions might be come draft weekend.

Though this is the time to learn some new information about which way teams might be leaning, it’s also worth noting that this is the time in the process where the most smokescreens are also released as teams might leak false information out to the media to get reports off their trail.

Knowing that, it’s always good to see what different opinions and different source pools have for each team, especially the Buccaneers at No. 7 overall.

These are some of the projections for the Bucs’ first round choice, as of right now.

Scott Reynolds, PewterReport.com

Pick: Florida State S Derwin James

“James has drawn comparisons to Kansas City’s Eric Berry – although James is bigger – and Seattle Kam Chancellor – although he’s faster and more athletic. The buzz in the NFL scouting community is that James is a Day 1 starter and has the makings of a Pro Bowl safety, and he can affect the defense in many ways.”

Mel Kiper, ESPN

Pick: Ohio State CB Denzel Ward

“Quenton Nelson might have been in play here, but the Bucs signed center Ryan Jensen in free agency and can move Ali Marpet back to guard. I think this pick has to be a defensive back — the Bucs had the league’s worst passing defense in 2017. Tampa Bay could choose from the best corner or safety on its board, and Ward is the top corner in this class. Former first-round pick Vernon Hargreaves III has not impressed, and Brent Grimes will be 35 when the season begins.”

Todd McShay, ESPN

Pick: Ohio State CB Denzel Ward

“Tampa Bay still needs help in the secondary, so the Bucs take the best man-to-man corner on the board.”

Daniel Jeremiah, NFL Network

Pick: Florida State S Derwin James

“James is a special talent capable of starting at multiple positions.”

Bucky Brooks, NFL Network

Pick: Alabama DB Minkah Fitzpatrick

“The hybrid defender can step in as a starting safety and play nickel corner in sub packages.”
