New Bucs head coach has been busy the last two days putting his staff together. On Friday the list grew longer.

Joining the Bucs’ staff will be two linebackers coaches, Mike Caldwell who will coach the team’s inside linebackers and Larry Foote who will coach the team’s outside linebackers.

Caldwell played for six teams over an 11-year NFL career and began coaching with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2008 as a defensive quality control coach and was moved up to assistant linebackers coach and eventually the team’s linebackers coach before departing to join Arians’ staff as the Cardinal’s linebackers coach 2013-2014. Caldwell has since spent the last four years in New York under Todd Bowles as the Jets’ assistant head coach and linebackers coach.

Foote played under Arians for multiple years in Pittsburgh and in 2014 in Arizona. He then began coaching in 2015 as he was hired to be Arizona’s assistant linebackers coach under Arians in 2015 before spending the last three seasons as the team’s linebackers coach.

In addition to the two linebackers coaches the Bucs also added Joe Gilbert to serve as the team’s offensive line coach and Kevin Ross to be the team’s cornerbacks coach.

Gilbert was the offensive line coach in Indianapolis with Arians and held the position for five years before joining Kevin Sumlin last year at the University of Arizona. In Gilbert’s lone season with Arizona the Wildcats allowed just 20 sacks over 13 games, averaged 202.4 rushing yards per game and ranked 24th in the nation with 457.7 yards of total offense per game.

Ross spent 14 years in the NFL as a cornerback and safety and worked as a defensive backs coach with the Vikings, Chargers and Raiders before joining Arians’ staff in Arizona as cornerbacks coach from 2013 to 2017.

      • Thanks Buc stops. My post was more of query than an absolute statement. I still don’t remember a dominate defense, but a top 10 is good enough with our offense. I am a big BA fan though.

        • I took your question as an honest one. I had looked it up when he was hired. Bowles is a pretty good coordinator if the talent is there. In Phoenix, the first season they did not have it. Their last season they did not have it either (it fell to 12th I believe).

  4. Watch Goodwin’s presser on the Buc website. I think our O line will be in good hands. Interesting that there are two L.B.’s coaches, one for inside, one for outside. That tells me we’re moving more to a 3-4 defense. You don’t need a ILB coach for one MLB. Also that’s the defense they’ve coached, and played in. Look for big changes to our personal on defense. I mentioned in another post there’s a lot of young L.B.’s who are F.A.’s for both the Jets, and Cards, expect more then one of them to land in Tampa.

(?) Buckner is still under contract and would like to be back. However, they have been pursuing Kacy Rodgers, Todd Bowles DC at the Jets. Things are in limbo as Rodgers has an offer from the Giants on the table and as far as has been reported, he hasn’t made up his mind. If he accepts the Giants offer, Buckner could still be in the mix. Wiki is listing Rodgers as Senior Defensive Staff Position – a position created just to hire him. He is not contending for DC. The Giants DC is James Bettcher who was former DC for guess who? Bruce Arians in Arizona.

    • Being that both Goodwin and Gilbert will be coaching the OL, curious if they bring in an assistant as well.

      • I used the positions from last years coaching staff and just filled in names. Some new positions will be added as you can see. Some from last year will not be filled as you suggest. My best shot at it. lol.

    • Thanks for this post Alfred E. I think it shows the larger, but cohesive coaching staff Arians wants to run the two practices for older and younger players, looking for that diamond in the rough.

  7. Well if this train of great players is coming from the Jets or the Cardinals I got news for you, the Bucs had a better record than both of those teams.
I hope BA doesn’t have the same problem with firing friends like Koetter did because all of these coaches have formed a bond with BA.
Firing a friend, like Koetter found out, is a tough thing to do.
