After his post-game press conference on Sunday, head coach Bruce Arians spoke to the media on Monday after a chance to go back and review the tape. Some of Arians’ initial feelings rang true but with a more comprehensive look at the game as a whole, he was able to give more detailed insight into the Bucs’ Week 1 loss.

(On if Tom Brady was comfortable)
“He looked like Tom Brady in practice all the time so it’s kind of unusual to see that in the ball game because they didn’t do the things that we didn’t get ready for. Everything that they did, we thought we were ready for. We’ve got some wide receivers that have to do a better job of winning one-on-one when he decides to go their way. He put us in the right run checks a couple times so it was all a learning experience that way. We can’t say that we were out of sync because we started out about as good as you can start out, going right down the field. Then we don’t get anymore chunk plays other than pass interference penalties. So I think it’s a learning experience but it’s just round one of a 16-round fight and we’ll learn from it.”

(On the process of changing teams not being automatic)
“It’s a situation where, all that verbiage when you’re under the gun is different and now you’re getting hit for the first time too so it’s all different.”
(On Donovan Smith)
“I was very disappointed in his play. I think that every now and then he reverts back to some techniques that aren’t very good. He got beat. He had probably the easiest guy to block up there and he did a poor job, it was one of his poorer games and I expect him to bounce back.”
(On losing the field position battle)
“When you look at the drive starts, ours was the 18 and theirs was the 42. That’s huge, huge advantage and special teams did have a huge part in that, as did the turnovers. We’ve got to do a better job of tackling on punt returns. We were getting down there pretty good but we were missing tackles. I think they had a 14-yard average on returns and that put them over the 50 twice. We’ve got to do a better job of punting the ball and a better job of covering, tackling.”
(On longer third-down production)
“On a few of those, guys have to win one-on-one. We didn’t do a good job winning one-on-one and we didn’t find the guys that were open. So we’ll do a better job and continue to grow in that direction.”
(On the Saints’ special teams advantage)
“It was very disappointing to get that field goal block. Our operation time was a little slow but again, we let penetration over the right guard and that’s really disappointing because you never expect that to happen. The muffed kickoff, that’s ridiculous. You never back up in that situation and guys are out there for the first time and you still don’t anticipate that happening when they’ve been coached not to but we’ve got to get it corrected, that’s for sure.”
(On Jamel Dean giving up the long pass to Jared Cook)
“That was not Jamel Dean. Jamel Dean was rolled up, he was a cloud corner. The safety, we were in Cover 2, the safety bit an inside route which can’t happen so it was not Jamel Dean at all.”
(On Tristan Wirfs)
“I thought he played really well for a rookie against an All-Pro. You knew he was going to get beat once, maybe. The offside penalty, I didn’t like that, but he battled hard and his run blocking was really good.”
(On positives and negatives in the run game)
“I thought [Ronald Jones] was a big positive, and Leonard [Fournette], they both ran the ball well. Our tight ends did not block the edge well and that was a big part of our game plan and we got beat at it. We were out physicalled. I thought that our defense was more physical than their offense but their defense was more physical than our offense and we can’t allow that to happen.”

(On his confidence in Fournette’s progress)
“I think his role will continue to increase. RoJo, I thought, had a really decisive day. He ran hard and made yards when there were no yards to be made a couple of times. Leonard’s role will increase and we’ll just see how much.”
(On Cam Jordan potentially throwing a punch)
“I saw it vividly and he said he was trying to punch the ball out, that was his answer to the referee but I think Ryan [Jensen] stood in there and handled his business pretty well.”
(On if the first interception was on Tom Brady or Mike Evans after seeing it on tape)
“No doubt. It wasn’t Cover 2, it was more of a quarters coverage and Mike should have been splitting and going down the middle and never stopping.”
(On Brady’s demeanor after the game)
“He’s had it before, he knows how to bounce back and he knows that he didn’t play well. It’s not what he expects from himself, nor do we expect, so I would anticipate him to have a little more grit and a little more determination this week.”
(On evaluating all players the same)
“Yeah, it speaks for itself. If you’re throwing an out route, you don’t throw it low and inside and it hasn’t been the case up until that one. He was a little bit late on it and it’s probably a better decision to go somewhere else with the ball.”
(On Carlton Davis)
“Two plays for him, he played an outstanding game other than, they ran what we call a Jerry Rice motion, he comes over and goes back and he missed the tackle and got the facemask. The other’s when, he had Michael Thomas covered really well and he just had his back arm around him when he batted the ball up and we got the interception. Other than those two plays, I thought he played great.”
