The Bucs had a big win both on the road and on a short week against the Carolina Panthers on Thursday. Thanks in part to a great defensive performance led by Shaq Barrett and a gigantic fourth down stop by Vernon Hargreaves III to save the game, the Bucs held Carolina to only field goals (and a safety) in their 20-14 win.

That victory for Tampa Bay was also the first win for Bruce Arians as the Bucs’ head coach. After the game, Arians spoke with the media to discuss their win. Here is a full transcript from Arians’ press conference.

Opening Statement
“They won that one in spite of me. Obviously the double timeout was stupid and it was a situation where I had called timeout, Todd didn’t realize it, coach called timeout, we always do that. It almost cost us the game but it didn’t, our defense stood oup and made a hell of a play. Really proud of how our defense played all night, I thought we handled McCaffrey extremely well, Olson on the other hand gave us a little problem, but I’d rather have him give us a problem than McCaffrey. I thought Todd had a great plan coming in and our guys played for 60 minutes, it wasn’t perfect but we played extremely hard for 60 minutes. I thought obviously our run game is building strides, last week I thought was good, I thought tonight was really good against a hell of a front. To come in here and win is a hard thing to do so we’re really really pleased.”

On the play of Shaq Barrett
“Yeah Shaq, he beat about two or three different dudes. I can’t say enough about him, he had one last week and I think that’s the type of year he’s going to have. He can rush the passer.”

On the last play and the tackle by Vernon Hargreaves
“It was a great tackle by Vernon just to drive and to keep a good running back out of the end zone, let alone get a first down. It was a great play by Vernon.”

On Kevin Minter coming in for an injured Devin White
“I’ll give Kevin a game ball. Kevin jumps in there, he’s a pro, he’s always ready to roll. Devin I don’t think is that serious, we didn’t want to take a chance with him and we knew we had a veteran going in there to call the defensive play.”

On the play of Jameis Winston
“I thought he was outstanding. He had a hell of a week as far as mentally getting ready for this ballgame. I think that’s the type of game he can play, I didn’t think he played that bad last week, he had the one bad play, but tonight he was really spot on.”

On how the defense played
“That’s two weeks in a row we did a great job of not giving up tocuhdowns and defending every blade of grass. That’s what we talk about all the time is it’s not over till it’s over. They’ve done a hell of a job for two weeks.”

On his previously struggles defeating the Panthers in the past
“Especially here, especially here. I’ve lost a lot of games here, big ones. This was special, something to build to go home, stack a couple wins hopefully, get ready for New York. We got a lot of guys beat up, this was a very physical game so we need the three days off. It really came at a good time.”

On if the injury to Jamel Dean is serious
“No the X-rays came back negative, it’s just a shock to his tibia.”

On the game played by Peyton Barber
“Like you said, I’m going to ride the hot hand. RoJo had a nice run but he kind of came out limping and said he was okay. Then Peyton had the hot hand and just was breaking tackles, moving the chains, there were a lot of really good four and five-yard runs in that whole game.”

On those runs setting up the pass game
“That sets up the play-action, that sets up the easy touchdown pass to Chris [Godwin] because they’re in there.”

On how comfortable Chris Godwin is in this offense
“The guy physical, he’s a blocker, and that’s going to give him touchdown passes.”

On getting his first win as the Bucs head coach
“You always want to get that first one off your back, you know? The guys have bought in, they gave us everything. We did some dumb things in the first half but we were in the same situation last week…one-point lead coming out of halftime, this time the defense stopped them, offense had a good drive, then we gave up the saftey. Couple of dumb things happened but there was no panic on the sideline. Guys were convinced we were going to win that ball game.”

On the importance of getting a NFC South win on the road
“Oh huge, a road win in the division is always big, it’s going to help us. We don’t have this game at home, we have to go London to play them again, so, this was big getting it here.”

  1. Congrats Arians on your first win as Bucs HC! I hope you are right that this team has bought in to what your coaches are teaching. We often forget how young this team truly is (2nd youngest team in the NFL).

Coaching and scheme change seems to be the difference with the defense so far this season.

  2. If you have to give one game ball who does it go to? Minter? Hargreaves? Barrett? What a game defensively. After being so down on Jameis he had a hell of a bounce back game maybe a short week helped as in sure he probably couldn’t wait to get back and prove it.

What a game in the end. That was dramatic. We are building and growing and that is evident and I am really really excited. What an answer to last weeks shit show.

3 things im looking forward to improving on next week

    Jameis keep improving

Make some damn field goals consistently

Someone getting some sacks outside of Shaq

  3. Seemed to me that Bucco Bruce and Leftwhich tried to see if they could get Jamies into a rhythm first, then try to open up the passing game .. . and try to get the running game going. They managed to do that against a tough D.

    – I’m hoping the reason why Shaquil Barrett had a good day pass-rushing the other D was maybe not quite as effective was because the Lt was the weak link of their Oline. Hopefully that’s the story as we face other teams. Maybe other d-lineman will start to make more of an impact against other teams with different weak links of their olines.

    – I’m thinking Perriman belongs more on the outside then as a slot. Godwin would make a more effective slot receiver.

  4. “Guys were convinced we were going to win that ball game.” -BA

This was HUGE! In years past in these type of situations especially after the Carlton Davis penalty that put Caronlina on the 11 yard line, you could see the team deflate and start to panic. You could see the collapse coming. The camera flashed to the D after that call and guys looked calm and confident. It gave me hope they might pull it off. Last year I’d not have even let myself think they could pull it off to stave off the crushing disappointment.

This D is legit. The coverage got a little sloppy in the 4th after the pass-rush slowed down but they won the game. Can you imagine what this defense is going to look like if they get JPP back?!

The offense wasn’t stellar but they didn’t crap the bed. If they can continue to improve (and for God’s sake figure out how to get Mike Evans open so Jameis doesn’t keep forcing him the damn football) this team can be competitive.

Oh, and we can’t be missing kicks. I almost threw up after getting that fumble, going all the way down and coming away with ZERO points. Holy Hell. But again, last years team would have started to shut down. These guys are starting to believe.

    • The NFL Network talked about him more than any other defensive player. Also the Panthers giving him a captain’s patch with his first season there is extremely laughable. Used to love him, but he’s left a rotten taste in my mouth. I’m glad he’s out of the picture.

  7. Arians had a Senior Moment last night. He needs to take Bowles and that Defense out for steaks because that would have haunted us all season…

On the other side, this is the formula for our success. Use the run to set up the pass. Stop putting everything on Winston’s shoulders to win the game. There are lots of other playmakers on this team to have to rely on the QB. Let’s get the TE’s involved some more and keep pounding the rock. Go Bucs!!

  8. This game could have gone either way, usually we lose those so nice to see the team pull it off. If Cam was truly healthy (think of all those sideline passes where the WR was open but he threw the ball way outside) we likely lose.

But on the flip side if Perriman could catch we could have won easily. He had better not be a big part of the game plan next game, I’d say next man up in his spot.

Giants are definitely beatable. Having extra time to prepare will be helpful while still adjusting to a new offense and defense.

It’s funny, the schedule looked difficult initially but as I look at it now I’m only worried about the Rams, Saints x 2, Seahawks and Texans. And maybe the Falcons x 1 but maybe not even.

I don’t care what he says Cam doesn’t look right. He’s my candidate for next big name player to retire.

Jags with no QB not intimidating.

Colts without Luck less intimidating. Lions?

    Cardinals? Giants?

And I’m sorry but the Titans are going to have to prove it to me.

That’s a winnable schedule. If Winston can play within himself and get more comfortable in the offense (ie, faster decisions getting rid of ball quicker) and our lack of depth on OL doesn’t become a late season problem, we could go 4-1 down the stretch, maybe 5-1 and finish 10-6. The more I think about it the games vs Falcons are key, maybe the difference between 10-6 and 8-8. Onward…

    • No offense, but this incessant obsession with looking at the schedule and figuring out how many games are winnable is dysfunctional. Last week, the season was over according to most prognosticators and not a single writer for PR picked the Buccaneers. Remember last year, we had just beaten the world champion Eagles and looked like a sure bet for 10-12 wins. Each week is a challenge in the NFL and with injuries and upsets, you don’t know until about the 11th or 12th week, where you stand. The important thing to me is improvement through the season. Cam is damaged goods. I said that in the middle of the summer when the Panthers indicating they were not going to let him throw until well into August. He’s not the same player he was. Take away his legs and you’ve changed his threat. Still, they are an experienced team with a great defense and very good offensive coordinator. Big Win!

      • I am not a fan of the 3-4 defense however it is (or used to be – I seldom watch college ball) much more common for college ball. Perhaps that eases the transition for the younger guys. I figured Barett would work out well here as he labored behind Miller and Chubb in Denver’s 3-4 defense. While he had a hard time getting on the field in Denver when he did he played well. Minter is another great pickup. I didn’t see any drop off when he came in.

Another big surprise to me is Vea. He had too much baby fat on him last year. Looks like he shed that and put on muscle in the off season as he is punking these centers he’s faced this year. Minus McCoy plus Suh – What a difference. For the first time in a long while we are not getting gouged on up the middle runs.

  11. I predicted a close game and very possible Bucs win here. What a difference a Day makes everyone ready to move on from Winston and the season is over after one damn game. Lol.

This is recipe for Winston to have success. Play good defense, actually run the ball, and quit asking him to throw it 50-60 times a game. I still think Leftwhich needs to improve his play calling some too. I’d like see some more play action.

They are young and need to clean up penalties especially on offense, but overall wow what difference on defense.

Where are all the troll idiots? Sure they are so disappointed Bucs won, Winston played great, and defense was great. All the so called “Bucs fans” stupid narratives aren’t playing out. So quick to post after the bad game….

  13. Let’s take it for what it is, a damn big win. Please let us not crown them yet lol. Cam missed so many wide open receivers, it was a little scary really. Jameis was better but still refuses to check it down when he had underneath receivers running wide open for 1st downs and holding the ball to long is just exasperating. All in all we will take that performance every week from Jameis. The determination and vision of Barber were amazing, that effort is what it takes with a marginal O’Line. I think when our rookie linebacker went down was instrumental in us winning that game. Kevin Mentor was a beast all night and that veteran leadership was huge for the defense. Congrats Bucs !!!!

  17. Here is my 2 cents about the game.
What a difference a year makes with the D. We can all move on from McCoy now. He is not worth the money, he gets paid and that why he was let go. I thought Minter did a hell of a job coming off the bench, the front 3 are stout and provide a pass rush from the inside. (Suh, Vea, Gholston). Shaq Barretts speed and timing of the snap count is second to none. What a pick up by Licht. Whitehead was flying around the ball and our defense did a great job of getting people on the ground. The Panthers O line had no surge the whole game. My hats off to Todd Bowles and the entire D.
Now the offense…….. why the heck are we not utilizing the best TE group in the league. Did we really draft OJ to block????? Why are we not flexing him out. We could of kept Luke Stocker if we needed a blocking tight end. Winston played well but I really like when he is decisive when wanting to use his legs to pick up yards. If not’s there pull it down and take off not dance around and try to be Mike Vick athletically which he is far from. Does Perriman have a catch this year? He should of had a touchdown last night on a perfectly thrown ball by Winston. The O-line played well and for the most part gave Winston time to throw the ball. Barber was in beast mode and ran with a purpose.
Overall, I feel like its a bit of a role reversal fro lat year with our D playing well and our offense sputtering at times but we have a run game this year.
We are 1-1 and that’s what everyone was predicting. Now we have extra time to prepare for the G Men.
    Go BUCS!!!!!!!

  18. Happy that they beat all the “experts” and won the game (they all picked Carolina win except one brave sole on CBS.com).

    Positives
    1) Vernon Hargraves is not hurt this year and is playing like gangbusters. He is (slowly) turning into the draft pick Licht and Kotter hoped for.
    2) Winston had a good game this week. No stupid turnovers. More accurate than usual. No overthrows on the short routes. Taking a sack when there was no play. As a result, finished with a QB rating of over 100.
    3) The Bucs had a running attack. Although all runners averaged under the wanted 4.0 yards per carry, and Barber had to do most of it himself, it was there. It gave Winston relief and that TD run was just amazing.
    4) Defensive stops throughout the game. Holding Christian McCaffrey to nothing after he ran for nearly 200 yards (and had more on catches) last week against the Rams was huge credit to the defensive focus on stopping the run and the game planning of Todd Bowles. Todd is proving the defensive talent is there – it just was not used well by Mike Smith last year. Those stops on third down and fourth down in particular won the game for this team. Only giving up 12 points to Carolina was completely unexpected (although I guess I should not have been surprised as despite the problem of the offense against the 49ers they were only responsible for 19 points).

    Negatives
    1) Third down conversions on offense. When the offense did not face third down it was effective. When it did however, they were very ineffective with only two conversions all night.
2 and 3) Breshad Perriman was ineffective again – but Winston was part of that. The deep ball if it is not Mike Evans is a problem for Winston still. Breshad Perriman was pretty open. On 1st-and-10 at the Tampa Bay 46-yard line midway through the third quarter, Winston throws a pass deep left to Breshad Perriman, but under throws the ball. Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly, who had 17 tackles on the night, read the pass and dropped the sure interception with the Panthers up 12-10. This would have been the moment we all said, “Here we go again.” Thanks to Luke’s butterfingers, we did not.
    4) Refs were pretty bad… again. Nothing Tampa can do about this, but that poorly marked ball when the Panthers were clearly short of a first down… then given the first down because of the really bad mark, was just terrible.

Overall very positive about this game. Winston did get help on that one play not throwing the INT on the severely under-thrown ball, but overall, a much improved team this week against as division opponent they rarely beat in Carolina.

  19. Whew!!!!! In many years past we lose that game. After the double penalty on Davis and the ball moves down to the 11 yd line, my first thought “He we go again”. Look, there are still a lot of mistakes but this is one: a very young team, second: whole new coaching staff. With that said this is a very different team from years before. There was no let down when the “Bad penalty” came late. They stepped up to the challenge and won the game!! BA and Bowles bring a different attitude and it’s refreshing to see. As soon as the “Dumb mistakes and costly penalties “ stop or are limited these type of games won’t come down to that last drive. This was a great away division win against a very good defense and for our defense to shutdown probably the most versatile RB in the league was impressive. Rest up, Heal up and get this next one!! GO BUCS!!

  22. I thought the O-Line did a pretty good job last night, especially in run blocking. You could tell they were frustrating GMC all night long. I was really surprised that Gerald let Jensen get under his skin and sucker him into a penalty. I thought that was funny. And the defense was outstanding all night long. Props to all of them.

Watching the pregame show, I was so sick and tired of hearing the commentators be so negative towards the Bucs. It seems that most of what they were saying was based off of last years team and the final score from last weeks game. Not really giving much thought to the idea that there is a complete new coaching staff and scheme in place. Maybe it is warranted to some extent, but they don’t have to be so biased. After all, it’s the “NFL Network” and not the ‘Home Team Network.’ So this win was vindicating for that and I felt like it made some of them eat their words. Even so, I knew that in the post-game show they would go with the narrative of how this game was a “Carolina loss” and not a “Bucs win” and blame it on Cam’s health some how before giving credit to the Bucs for a great defensive performance. I didn’t stay up and watch all of it, so maybe they did later on. But once they started talking about Cam’s health right off the bat, I shut it off. I saw I needed to see from the game, and the Bucs won! Go Bucs!

  24. Vea and Suh are playing well. They are doing their jobs. Gholston and Allen are contributing. They are supplying QB pressures as well as stopping the run.

Barrett is catching them by surprise. I’m looking for Nassib a little more now. The defense is doing great overall.

    On to the Giants.

  25. The football Gods were with us last night. Arians screwed up royally calling those double time outs at games end. Kinda surprised to see this from an experienced coach like him. This is how karma works. Had we not won, Arians would have egg on his face. We won so..all is forgiven. See how that works? WINNING IS ALL THAT MATTERS.
