Winning has always been the number one thing to quarterback Tom Brady.

If you recall back in the offseason, the Chargers were the other team that was a finalist for Brady when he was a free agent. Now facing the team that could have been this week, Brady has no regrets choosing the Bucs as his new team for the first time in two decades. He’s only been here for a couple of months, but it hasn’t taken long for Brady show his affection for the Bucs’ organization. Here is a full transcript from Brady’s press conference with the media on Thursday.

(On the success they’ve had starting out each game)
“We got off to a good start in all the games. We got to figure out how to keep that consistency over the course of 60 minutes. It’s one thing to get off to a good start, but you want to play well at the end of every half, too. You want to start the third quarter fast, really you want to play great 60 minutes every week. It’s a pretty small sample size still, but we absolutely want to get off to a fast start every game. You want to play ahead, you want to play on your terms and we’re certainly going to have to as the year goes on continue to gain consistency, dependability over the course of a whole game. That’s going to be the goal.”

(On playing against a rookie QB, what he remembers being a first year starter)
“It feels like a continuation of college for the younger players because they’re getting into the league and the game probably has morphed a little bit into what the college game kind of has been. Some younger quarterbacks can play and kind of do some of the things that they did in college, which makes the transition a little bit easier. It’s a little different from when I started, although the school I played at was probably more of a pro-style team, so it was a little easier for me than it was for some others. It was a long time ago that I was in that situation, but it didn’t feel too big for me. I played at a school where there was a lot of expectation, we played in front of 100,000 people every week, so it was a big time college program and I think Justin played at a big time college program, too, so he had a big following. Now you come in, there’s not a lot of media attention, at training camp there’s not a lot of people, there’s no one at the game. It kind of feels different, it’s a unique situation for all of us, it certainly is for him playing this year, he’s done a great job when he’s been in there, we’re going to have to play good to beat this team.”

(On how strongly he considered the Chargers in free agency and if he ever thinks “What if?”)
“No, I love the fact where I chose to play. I love playing with our coaches, playing with the players we have on this team. We made a great decision and I love what we have going here, we got a lot of work we’re putting into it. We didn’t have the benefit of the offseason program or training camp, so we’re going to continue to be a work in progress and try to get better every week, every day, every meeting, every walkthrough, every time we can talk about football and figure out how to put all the pieces together, which we’re working on on a daily basis. It’s a great organization, I’ve loved every minute that I’ve been here, other than losing a game against the Saints, we’ve had a lot of great days.”

(On collaborating with Tom Moore)
“It’s been great, he’s just an amazing guy. He has so much football knowledge, I competed against him for quite a while with teams that he was on and coached for. He sits in all our meeting, talks a lot of football, it’s great having him around. He sees football in a very unique way and I think everyone appreciates the insights he brings.”

(On how much the offensive cohesion has been stunted with top players missing)
“You got to take advantage of that situation. I think you’d ideally like to have everybody out there practicing and the only way to get better is to practice together. I don’t see it as you can walk through or talk through everything and not go through practice. There’s a lot of things that happen out there or happen in the moment, you got to make critical decisions, everyone’s got to be on the same page, and the more you practice, the more those things are going to come up. I always think it’s a benefit in practice and to practice well. When certain guys can’t for injury, and this is a contact sport, things happen, it is good for other guys to get reps and for them to get in the air and prove to everybody that if they did get the chance to be in there that they got to take advantage of it and do a great job. That’s how a lot of guys get their positions, guys get injured and guys never get their job, that’s just the way football is.”

(On if moving onto the next game is expedited this year with less of an offseason)
“I like to move on pretty quick for sure. Yes, you’re thinking about the wins and the losses, but you’re also thinking about improvement and how it felt and what we need to do better and what I can do better and how I need to communicate better. The win is the win, the loss is the loss, you probably think about the loss more than you think about the win, the win is probably more of a relief than a joyful feeling. You feel like ‘Okay, glad we won. Let’s start making improvements.’ So I get after it pretty quick and my mind’s on pretty quick, and I kind of know how I did as soon as I did it. Even watching the film, two hours after the game I’ll watch the film and on the flight home I’ll watch the game, watch it a few times and then move on from there.”

(On what he does for the players that haven’t gotten a lot first team reps to get them up to speed)
“I think all that stuff just comes with practice. You can spend time with each other outside of the locker room or whatever, this year we can’t do much. Getting to know people is one thing but getting to know them on the football field is most important and ultimately we’re all here to do a job. Our job is to win football games, and to win football games is very demanding. Everything is important, they just don’t magically happen, it’s not about let’s clap our hands together and scream, it’s about doing the right things consistently, gaining the trust of your teammates, being dependable every day in practice, through every game. The more people that are doing that, the better you’re going to be, the less people that do it, the less good you’re going to be. It’s got to be a commitment by everybody to show up every day with an attitude to work and put the work in, and it all pays off. When you win it’s all worth it, when you lose, you got to do better. The thing about sports is that there’s a scoreboard, at the end of every game you know how you did, at the end of every season there’s a record, you know how you did. If it doesn’t measure up, you got to make improvements, and if it does measure up you better get started on next year. That’s football.”
