The Buccaneers were without their starting cornerback Brent Grimes in Week 1 due to a groin injury. Tampa Bay will be without its other starting cornerback Vernon Hargreaves III, who suffered a serious shoulder injury during the team’s 48-40 win at New Orleans on Sunday while making a tackle, for Sunday’s game against Philadelphia – and possibly longer.

An Internet report surfaced Tuesday night about Hargreaves possibly having a labrum injury and missing the entire season. That could not be confirmed by PewterReport.com, and we were instead informed that no decision has been made about Hargreaves possibly going on injured reserve as he is seeing a specialist on Wednesday.

Bucs head coach Dirk Koetter expressed concern over Hargreaves’ injury during his Monday press conference.

“I thought he was really good,” Koetter said about Hargreaves’ game. “I thought Vernon has played well all through the preseason. He’s really worked on his game. He’s brought energy. He’s been a good leader on the field with the way he’s played, and it was just unfortunate. He made a really nice play on the play that he got hurt on and we’re just hoping for the best in that.”

Hargreaves finished Sunday’s game with seven tackles, one forced fumble and one pass breakup.

Tampa Bay signed cornerback Marcus Wiliams on Tuesday and waived center Josh Gettis. The Bucs also worked out former Redskins cornerback Bashaud Breeland, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The 5-foot-11, 196-pound Williams has played in 49 career games, with 14 starts, totaling 105 tackles (three for loss), 27 passes defensed, 10 interceptions, 2.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.

The Bucs started rookie cornerback Carlton Davis on Sunday and also played fellow rookie cornerback M.J. Stewart, in addition to third year cornerback Ryan Smith. Those three will likely see the majority of action against the Eagles this Sunday in the team’s home opener, in addition to Javien Elliott, who was called up from the practice squad last week. The Bucs remain hopeful that Grimes can return as quickly as possible, perhaps on Sunday, but groin injuries can be tricky. Tampa Bay will know more on Grimes’ status for this week’s game on Wednesday.

The Bucs are also awaiting an injury update regarding wide receiver DeSean Jackson, who injured his shoulder in the first half and suffered a concussion in the second half. Jackson finished with five catches for 146 yards and two touchdowns.
