The Bucs are finished with roster cuts – for a day or two at least. Tampa Bay trimmed its roster down to 53 players by making the following cuts within the last 48 hours:

QB Ryan Griffin

RB C.J. Prosise

WR Jaydon Mickens

WR Cyril Grayson, Jr.

WR Travis Jonsen

TE Tanner Hudson

TE Codey McElroy

TE Jerell Adams

OT Brad Seaton (waived injured)

OT Jake Benzinger

OL Brandon Walton

OL Jonathan Hubbard

DT Jeremiah Ledbetter

DT Benning Potoa’e

DT Kobe Smith

ILB Joe Jones

OLB LaDarius Hamilton

OLB Elijah Ponder

CB Antonio Hamilton

CB Herb Miller

CB Chris Wilcox

S Javon Hagan

Because there are four members of team that are currently on the COVID-19 list – defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, kicker Ryan Succop and offensive linemen Nick Leverett and Earl Watford – the Bucs will have to cut four more players this week when they return to action on Thursday. Watford is expected to be released, so three other Tampa Bay players will need to be waived.

The group of players on that bubble includes ILB Grant Stuard, S Chris Cooper, G John Molchon, OL Nick Leverett and K Jose Borregales. The release of Borregales is all but assured as Tampa Bay will only have one kicker on the roster. Borregales is a candidate for the practice squad unless he gets picked up elsewhere.

Bucs second-year OLB Cam Gill is expected to start the season on injured reserve, while fourth-year WR Justin Watson is expected to start the year on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list.

Stuard and Molchon are goners

So when the 4 guys come off the Covid list, Suh likely takes Gill’s roster spot (goes on IR), Leverett takes Molchon’s, Succop takes Borreglas’ spot and Watford gets released.
That would give them the following player count per position group:
QB: 3
RB: 4
TE: 3
WR: 6
OL: 9
DL: 7
OLB: 4
ILB: 5
CB: 5
S: 4
ST: 3
Guys that surprise me to still be on the team are McLendon, Steward and Cooper. The Bucs must like the Special Teams ability of Steward and Cooper a lot.

A little nervous about the TE room. We kept the best 3, But OJ is a regular on IR, Gronk is not a spring chicken, nor is Brate. Tanner Hudson will likely get scooped up by someone, and McElroy? I thought he looked really good. Griffin never had a chance. I think a lot of young guys are getting a chance. I wonder what the roster will look like in a month?

I can’t say I’m really surprised by any of the cuts… well not counting Cam Newton! We knew that all these players were just camp fodder. This team is stacked! Would like to see a better RB 3, and Return Specialist as well. Saw some familiar names on cutdown list. Spence, Beneoch, and RB Barber. Don’t know if there r any castoffs that can upgrade our weaknesses? Didn’t really see any RBs that I could see the Bucs picking up. I think they give the kid one more year. Why can’t we just find that one return specialist who had… Read more »

You may start to feel bad for Griffin but the guy played 7 years in the NFL and has a Super Bowl Ring while only throwing about 7 total passes or less in a regular season game. He got more than he ever should have and lucked out being in the right place at the right time to just ride the pine. Time to move on.

How about former all pro returner Pharoh Cooper? He just got cut. I’d prefer him over Darden. Just a thought.

Hope they can keep Borregales on practice squad since Succup has been inconsistent this pre season. Stuard looks not only irrelevant but very slow to me. Lol. He should go as well. I haven’t seen enough of the others on bubble to comment. Leverett was decent but lot bad snaps. Hainsey didn’t look too hot either. Need decent back up for Jensen not sure who that is.

I know the Bucs won’t, and can’t, keep two kickers on the 53, but I think they’ll be sorry they let Borregales go. No way he makes it to the PS. He’ll get snatched up so fast.
Then when Succop struggles or gets covid, we’ll be screwed.
