After trading down with the Los Angeles Rams, The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have drafted Auburn cornerback Jamel Dean with the 94th overall pick in the third round of the 2019 NFL draft.
For the second consecutive pick in this year’s draft the Bucs go with a cornerback. Dean was initially deemed medically unqualified to play at Ohio State after multiple knee injuries in high school. He then transferred to Auburn where he suffered yet another knee injury prior to the 2016 season.
Once healthy in 2017 he played in all 14 games for the Tigers, racking up 43 total tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and eight passes defended. In 2018 he improved on his junior year, adding another 30 tackles and two more tackles for loss with a sack, two interceptions and nine passes broken up.
Despite his injuries, Dean played the past two years at Auburn without issue and remains a very athletic defensive back with great measurables. At the NFL combine, Dean ran an unofficial 4.3 40-yard dash, coupled with a 41 inch vertical and a 126 inch broad jump.
Dean’s Career Defensive Stats:
2017: 43 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 8 PBUs.
2018: 30 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 9 PBUs, 1 FR.
