With another pick that was received from the Los Angeles Rams in their trade, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers drafted Mike Edwards, a safety out of Kentucky, with the 99th overall pick in the third round.

Edwards played in nine games for the Wildcats in 2015, but burst on the scene in 2016 as he reached triple digits with 100 tackles, 5.5 of them going for loss, three interceptions and eight passes defended. As a four-year player and three-year starter, Edwards totaled 317 total tackles, 21 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, 10 interceptions, two defensive touchdowns, 23 passes defended and two forced fumbles.

He’s a versatile player with good size, range and instincts that will step in with the Bucs and likely be in position to immediately compete for a starting job at the free safety position.

Edwards’ Career Defensive Stats:
2015: 39 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 1 INT, 2 PBUs, 1 FF.
2016: 100 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, .5 sacks, 3 INT, 8 PBUs.
2017: 96 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 4 INT, 7 PBUs.
2018: 82 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, 2 INT, 6 PBUs, 1 FR, 1 FF.

  1. I like Edwards as a player but was it really necessary to use a 3rd on him?

I am very curios to hear what Arians and Bowles have to say regarding drafting three DBs on day 2.

As controversial as the day 2 picks have been Bucs have improved team speed on defense for the most part.

  6. Just what we need to add to this circus another 5 foot 10″1/2 Safety. Just listen to Jason Licht press conference; I don’t know what planet he is on but, it’s not earth! This is the most bizarre Bucs draft I have ever watched so far. Evidently we don’t need any defensive line help. I guess JPP and Nissamb have mysteriously developed some type of magical foot speed. Somebody please wake me up and tell me I just didn’t watch the craziest Buccaneer draft ever so far.

  12. I guess the line of scrimmage doesn’t matter anymore. Oh well, the NFL kind of sucks as a product now anyway. The refs have too much impact on the outcome with their illegal contact and breathing on a QB penalty BS. I hope we get the “calls” next year like the Rams and maybe we can win a game or two. At least the Gators will be good to watch again.

  14. I’m going to remain cautiously optimistic, but I get all the head scratching. We missed out on quality trench players and this was the year to get them- both for need and type of draft we have this year. I love White but this overall strategy is puzzling.

If this draft was coming from an elite front office they would get the benefit of the doubt but it isn’t. Licht now officially has his job on the line by not going all chalk and is betting his livelihood on his 5th and 6th db’s taken in 2 years.

  15. I know how to make our secondary better, put 6 rookies out there. What a shit show. Really getting hard to root for this team. I cant even begin to fathom the stupidity of these picks with a deep defensive line class. Licht avoids class strength like the damn plague. Fucking awful.

  16. TUA!! TUA!! TUA!!

The secondary is set for a decade, or until the next group of executives shuffles in and decides otherwise.

No particular order of recent premium picks at CB/S: Carlton Davis, Vernon Hargreaves, Sean Bunting, Jamel Dean, MJ Stewart, Mike Edwards, Jordan Whitehead, and Justin Evans. Plus free agents Ryan Smith, Isaiah Johnson and Kentrell Brice.

4 more picks to get a DE/OLB, RB, DT, and OG.

  19. I love that Mike Edwards pro comparison is MJ Stewart. I was just thinking to myself “You know what this team needs? MORE MJ Stewart’s!

Thank God we have Licht to supply us with people who resemble busts from a year ago that he is using premium picks on replacing.

God willing Licht will be back next year to draft someone with a Pro Comparison to Ronald Jones, because if we’re going to have multiple MJ Stewart’s it only seems fair to have multiple Ronald Jones’ running around in the backfield and dropping passes.

  20. Haha love all the comments. Its funny that last year whenever we lost everyone was complaining about how our secondary sucks and that we have no CB’s or Safeties. We need help everywhere and may be the coaching staff thinks that they can fix the O-Line and that they need secondary help.
We are a losing team and hence i get that everybody is negative. Last year when the Browns selected Baker and Ward with 1st and 4th picks every couch based draft expert thought that was just Browns being Browns and look how that turned out. Trust the process and bash them when the selections actually don’t work .

  21. Slay, we were complaining about the scheme sucking way more than the players. As for the process, we dont even know what that is yet. All we see is like 9 players wasted in the secondary the last 3 years. 9! What happens if vea gets Injured? You gonna trot out Buea Allen to save the day? What if jpp gets hurt? This defensive line is old.

  22. I love the White pick…much needed with the Alexander departure. I also like the Aryans hire. I just don’t know why you don’t blow out the GM. Especially one as bad as Licht. This Bucs team may not win 3 games next year. The best QB on the team is gone. Winston is a turnover machine. Put a quarter in his ear and you get a fumble or pick. The defense only has a few good players and most of them are beyond their prime (GMC, JPP…heck even David is up there now). Beckwith doesn’t look to be coming back and our secondary was one of the worst units in the league last year even with all the picks we’ve made over the last three years (VGIII, Evans, Smith, Davis, Stewart, and Whitehead). Why would we think the same dude that picked those guys has now picked any better with this group of DB’s? The running back (Barber) wouldn’t start on many other (any other?) teams even though he is durable and tough. Half of our OL sucks is in shambles and the other half is mediocre (pretty good pass blocking yet terrible run blocking). Our recent top picks have all been busts so far (Vea sits half the year, Jones sucks the whole year, and the DB’s from ’18 draft didn’t impress). Our kicker situation is the laughing stock of the league and has been for 5 years. The GM has proven himself to be way over his head. The only area you can hang your hat on is the receiving core w/ Evans, Godwin, Howard and Brate. The rest of the team is aging, overrated or just plain bad. This team will be picking in the top 3 next year, and I think they’ll likely have the #1 pick in the 2020 draft. All of the perennial doormats (i.e. Browns, Bills, Jets…heck even the Cardinals) have passed this Bucs team by. Hopefully, another GM will be making that #1 pick. If Aryans can turn around Winston, maybe we can still salvage this “cycle” with some later career success with Winston who is now entering his 5th campaign. Time flies..

  24. Forget about MJ Stewart being his comp. Licht’s comp is Matt Millen. Just like Millen our GM loves to pick the same position over and over due to his contiguous failures except Millen actually drafted a HOF’er in Megatron.
Who the heck has Licht drafted with all those 1st and 2nd rounders? Nobody’s thats who!

My only rational conclusion is that since most fans think the Bucs blew the #5 pick with Blue chip still left on the board at a more valued position, just make sure the rest of the picks are so bad that people warm up to the mistake at five.

  25. Guys this new regime has heavily influenced this draft. It has Arians and Bowels fingerprints all over it. They wanted to get faster and now we are definitely faster! I think we have to trust them as they know things that we don’t, and they are professionals. They have a plan, but I’ll be damned if I can figure it out.
Maybe we are going to play with 2 DL, 2 LBs, and 7 DBs. A 2-2-7!

  29. I paused to think about every pick so far. Doing my best to understand this one. There must be some method to the madness, but just haven’t been able to rationalize this one. Lance Zierlien compares him to MJ Stewart. We already have MJ Stewart. What are we getting with Mike Edwards that we don’t have with MJ Stewart? They’re both about the same size and ran 4.5/40s.

What really strikes me as odd is that S Chauncey Gardner-Johnson/Florida is still on the board. What’s wrong with Chauncey? I’m going to give the new crew the benefit of the doubt hoping that in the coming days it all starts to make sense. What is apparently clear is that the Bucs do not like or need to improve the secondary we spent so much draft capital on last year. Go Bucs!

  30. Appears that the plan is to create a deep and speedy secondary. There were times last season when we were trotting out guys that had no business in the starting line-up. With teams passing so much, we may be playing as many as six DB’s.

I know many of us want to see help on the D-line, but folks, we are switching to a 3-4 alignment in which the pass rush comes from a variety of positions. Plus, that pass rush was no where near as bad as the pass coverage when the QB’s could take three steps and find a wide open target so quickly the pass rush was a non-factor.

  31. I was all in on Jason Licht until this draft. 5 day two picks in the Soco diary over the last 2 years and not one is a starter. It’s no wonder we are the laughing stock of the league.

At first I was fine with White over Allen in the first and now I see that was a mistake too based on how shitty day two went.

Is this the worst day 2 ever for the Bucs? Has to be. We just drafted 3 more MJ Stewarts in a draft full of defensive trenches. I can’t believe how F’ing bad Licht botched this. He has to go

  33. Are we ready to get serious? Who do you think chose those players? Licht? No…Arians and Bowles. Therefore, if these picks end up failing to live up to their expectations, it is totally on them. They would not have chosen guys that they thought could develop into quality players. Now…Licht has made plenty of mistakes the last few years. No doubt. But these are the guys that Arians and Bowles wanted…they called those shots on these.. mostly Bowles most likely. So the bottom line is, do you have faith in those guys? At this point, I’d say that I still do. So save yourself a major headache and get ready for the ride…whatever it will be.

  34. @mark2001 so wtf does that say about Licht’s past drafts? He sucked so F’ing badly that BA and Bowles had to come in and re-draft his secondary blunders? are you ready to get serious my friend? Jesus Christ I was blind on Licht for years and never understood the hate but boy do I feel foolish now. Jameis was a lock, Mike was projected where he should have been, Howard fell in his F’ing lap. Aside from that a bunch of average players and yup I’m calling Kwon and Marpet average. Marpet could be fire if they stop moving his ass around and let him beast at RG… but that’s on F’ing Licht too!

I didn’t say he hadn’t really jammed us with some poor personnel decisions. But we don’t know how bad some of these guys really are…the coaching was bad. Koetter didn’t have the backbone to be a HC. 38. I think….Todd Bowles and his staff watched the tape intensively from last season and witnessed..Just how slow our secondary was. And People..It was slow and non-tackling. There’s a reason why we went almost exclusively DB’s..with speed and ball-hawking abilities. On thing that grabs you about this kid from Kentucky is..he’s a playmaker with speed who is always around the ball and he tackles well. Face the music..our Db’s yes, including LB’s were very slow to the ball last year. And all of you know…if there was a minute left in the game and we were ahead with the opposing offense on the field? We knew they would score. How many times was that? hell, you can’t even count’em…there were so many. Fix this Defense and we win more games.
