The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have drafted Central Michigan cornerback Sean Bunting with the 39th overall pick in the second round of the NFL draft.

Bunting is a long, fast, athletic corner who excels in press coverage which should ideally fit into the aggressive system that Todd Bowles will implement in Tampa Bay this year. He finished the 2018 season with 37 tackles, two of them going for loss, two interceptions, five passes defended and two forced fumbles over 12 games.

His production in that redshirt junior season earned him All-MAC honors as well as CMU’s defensive player of the year award.

At the NFL Combine, Bunting ran a 4.42 40-yard dash time in addition to a 41.5 inch vertical and a 126 inch broad jump.

Bunting’s Career Defensive Stats:
2016: 18 tackles, 2 INT, 5 PBUs.
2017: 49 tackles, 0.5 tackles for loss, 5 INT, 5 PBUs, 1 FR, 2 FFs.
2018: 37 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 5 PBUs 2 INT, 2 FFs.

  1. I like Bunting’s size and speed.

But when will Bucs address trenches in the draft?

    • I was thinking the same thing…I wanted them to go OL in the 2nd, but then again CB is a need as well. I’m sure there is a plan in place, hopefully in the 3rd or trading back into the 2nd.

  9. I’m not being negative here. Selecting a linebacker and a cornerback is a positive thing as long as most of us understand this is not going to help us this season.
Anything we draft from now on should be best available player. We were the worst in the red zone and the only way it’s going to be resolved is with a pass rush; it’s too late to resolve this issue now until 2020.

I’m sure we need a CB and Bundt likely is a good pick, but to me you fix o line first! Year after year they have tried build this team ass backwards instead of the lines first and hasn’t worked.

  14. LOL Licht being Licht. He’s drafted 4 CBs in the first 2 rounds of the last 3 drafts. Can’t run the ball and the only legit pass rushers are 30 plus with one apparently soon to be cut/traded but we needed another CB?? Athletically this seems like an upgrade over what we have but that’s not saying much. The right side of the OL needs repair but nothing in FA or this far in the draft. We needed a replacement since we want to move on from GMC so bad but thus far nothing. Smh this is why our offseason house cleaning should’ve went from the GMs office on down. Wouldn’t be shocked if used our 3rd on a WR lol after all we listen hump and DJax. Sick of Matt Mullen Jr at the helm

  17. I’m not trying to be negative but this pick made me throw up in my mouth. Licht’s second round misery continues. I know we won’t know if this kid is good for two years, blah blah blah…but seriously. I would have taken Greedy all day over this guy. Gardner-Johnson.Love from ND; Lane from Mich St. There were literally a half dozen DB’s I would have taken over this guy. I don’t profess to be a MAC expert and I hope to god I am wrong. I just don’t think I am. Seferian-Jenkins, Spence, Aguayo, Evans, Jones…and the beat goes on. This is the second round…not the 6th. I think Licht tries to be too cute with his drafts.

  23. Whatever you think of this kid (and I never watched any of the CMU vs. South Newhampshire State games myself), he does not make our defense better in 2019…maybe down the road, maybe he’ll even win starting time late in the season, but the leap from guarding WRs at CMU to guarding Julio Jones is mountainous (just ask VHIII).

So I ask, how is our team getting better from the two straight 5 win seasons we just posted?

The pick should have been OL, where a reasonable chance of solidifying a unit on our team could have existed.

Licht has got to go ASAP.

  26. When will the owners wake up and dump this GM! Here we are after all these years with Licht as our GM, continually having to draft the same positions over and over because he can’t find someone who is capable of playing that position. All I can hope for at this point is that the coaching staff has gotten better despite the GM.
I don’t see how we get out of the cellar.

  27. Im surprised the Bucs drafted Bunting from Central Michigan. There was another really good player from Appalachian State Community College Central Campus available. Also, Valdosta State had a really good long snapper still available too!

  28. Let’s recap the changes from our two straight 5-win teams:

    Lose pro bowl MLB
    Lose best slot WR
Lose fastest WR, former pro bowler
Are we also losing perennial pro bowl DT?

Add MLB we hope will develop into a pro bowler
Add CB that might compete for playing time with VHIII and/or C Davis
    Add journeyman RG
    Add aged small LB/Safety
    Add washout fast WR

What strategy is Licht following? I am not falling for the “attitude change” approach…lived through the SchiaNo experiment with that approach already. How about actually improving the totality of talent as an approach.

    Licht has got to go!!!!!

  38. I must say I was a bit surprised by the pick when there were a few more recognizable names on the board. Over the years I learned to pay little attention to the rankings of the media types who predict when a player for whom they know so little will be drafted.

To get on here and start with the “woulda, coulda, shoulda” and spewing insults when most of us have so little knowledge about a player or the team’s intentions on his use, is so predictable. Me, I’ll just wait and see. I do have a hard time thinking Bunting was the BPA, but who knows?

  39. Gator Frank, there were better players still on the board? Oh wow weird, I didn’t know you predicted the future. So you know for 100% certainty, that the players still on the board will be better than Bunting? You’re one talented individual I guess. See how it really works is, the projected mock draft is just for schmucks like you that do NOT know how good every player in college is and where they may likely be drafted. This isn’t like ranking former NFL players. I love how you seem
To think you know exactly how good everyone will be. I would bet my house and my cars that you’ve watched exactly 0 mins and 0 seconds of Central Michigan football games this year. So do everyone a favor and shut up. Because you sound like an idiot

  40. Wadeless. Weird how an expert that was a commentator at the NFL draft( you know, someone that gets paid to know everything about college players) says he loved the pic, and that he had Bunting rated higher than Greedy. Something tells me that his opinion matters just a tad more than yours. Please don’t pretend like you’ve ever seen Bunting play. Because you know as much about him as you do me. So your opinion is baseless, irrational, and stupid. Keep

  42. Scubog, recognizable names in no way shape or form even remotely hints at better names. So everyone should take Greedy and assume he’s better because he plays at LSU and is a more known name. Could he possibly be a more known name BECAUSE he played at C.Michigan? Kiper said he thought Bunting was one of the best athletes in the draft, and he had Bunting rated higher than Greedy. Also, I love all the people saying we needed to address OL more. The Bucs secondary was historically bad last season, allowing a franchise worst 73% comp percentage. 8.2 YPA, and a 65 QBR. That’s like facing Rodgers or Brady all 16 weeks. The Bucs need fast, physical, ballhawking talented corners who can cover. Because i don’t care if the Bucs added 2 pro bowl OLineman, they’ll just lose 45-41, instead of 45-35. With that secondary, nothing that offense does will make a single shred of difference. Only gripe I have, is that I wish that last pic was a DE instead of Mike Edwards. But he was definitely BPA on defense, as he’s a very talented player. So I can’t hate it that much. You ever think that maybe the Bucs low sack totals and almost non existent pressure on QB’s was coaching related? I mean there’s enough talent on the DLine for the Bucs to be a middle of the pack team in sacks and QB pressures. I trust Bowles WAAAAAY more than Mike friggen Smith who absoltely sucks as a defensive coach. Maybe the Bucs realize that so opted to go with guys that can cover. Let’s also remember that the Seahawks built their dominant defense of the last decade from the back to the front, with Sherman, Browner, Chancellor, Thomas. So to say, you cannot succeed without a DLine is insane. Just ask the most successful team of the last 20 years. The Pats DLine sucks every year. The years they won SB’s lately were because of a great secondary. They won despite a below average DLine

  44. Dave: I said I was surprised. Didn’t you read and comprehend what I wrote?

I in no way meant that to mean the “more recognizable names” were the better players. That was the point I was trying to make. I’m well aware that many of those players whose names get echoed over and over (like Greedy) won’t be as good as a player for which many say, “Who?” You and I are in agreement.
