The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have drafted Utah kicker Matt Gay with the 145th pick in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL draft.

In two years handling kicking duties at the University of Utah, Gay drilled all 85 of his extra point attempts and converted on 56 of his total 65 field goal attempts for a conversion rate of 86.2%, including 72% from 50 or more yards. He’s got a booming leg that can extend beyond 60 yards if asked and he also won the Lou Groza Award for the nation’s top placekicker in 2017.

Gay’s Career Kicking Stats:
2017: 40/40 XP, 30/34 FG, 130 points
2018: 45/45 XP, 26/31 FG, 123 points

  4. great opening comment @wadeless! how can anyone top that? it’s in plain F’ing ENGLISH.

WTF is Licht thinking??? At least he didn’t trade up this time? I mean, he’s learning???

“The kicker is your leading scorer so we got better today” is going to be the sort of turn speak I expect to hear at his presser today.

I’d call this a Dominick draft, but no, it’s far worst. This is your worst work since your first free agency, Mr. Licht.

  5. Kickers have a huge impact on the game — much more so than a third string OL etc. that we would probably have drafted if not him. If we had a good scouting department and GM, and I would oppose this pick, because a good team can find a starting OL in the 5th round. Given Licht’s bad track record in late rounds, I think this is a great pick, and much more likely to pan out than anything else he would have done.

    • We will see if it is a great pick. I read this guy has a great leg but is slow and had three kicks blocked in the PAC 12 just last year.

Does anyone think we could have used The Humps twin brother, Hunter Goodwin who was chosen a few picks later.

  11. What an awful pick and I dont want to hear this third string lineman bs. Guys like gerald Willis from Miami, you know a defensive lineman, sitting there and we take a fucking kicker. Someome please start a go fund me for the fire licht brigade. This pick has his stupidity all over it. Guess Jameis put on weight knowing he was going to get creamed this year. Wow , just wow.

  12. Bad enough we draft a kicker, does his name have to be Gay? This was just the bow on the package, the cherry on top of the sunday. What should surely be Licht’s last draft has got to be his most confounding. How many times does this guy touch the flame, even tho it burns him every time? We got out drafted once again by every team in our division. Thanks Jason.

  15. this is the only explanation I can come up with…
Aguayo snuck into the Bucs war room and hacked into the system to change the pick from a DL to a kicker.

It is the only reasonable explanation!!!!

on the bright side, the 2-14 record we are about to earn for 2019 will put us in a good spot to draft Winstons replacement next year!!

  17. Can’t wait to read Scott’s next article defending this pick.

Fun fact: In 2016 when Jason Licht was busy trading up and making Roberto Aguayo one of the highest drafted kickers in draft history 3 kickers quietly signed UDFA contracts (like most do). Aldrick Rosas would go on to become a Pro Bowl kicker for the Giants and 2nd team All Pro. Will Lutz would become the Saints kicker and make 87% of his FG’s. Lou Groza award winner Ka’imi Fairbairn would become the Texans kicker, make 85% of his FG’s and get a 2nd round tender.

Not only would Aguayo live in infamy as the worst kicker selection in modern history but Licht would follow it up with wasting Glazer cash on Nick Folk and Chandler Cantanzaro. All the while other starting kickers get signed without draft compensation and some make the Pro Bowl.

There is NO explanation, i am pissed i liked this team, Jacksonville next best bet i guess, miami sucks, penn state corner went after our kicker pick!!! shit if going to take stupid pick stay with your piss poor defensive back theme, and do something good, next pick was oruwarije, or something like that, ABSOLUTELY better than a kicker, and every DB we picked before we passsed on him. I could not conceive this group absolutely fucked this team and draft up!!!!! Now you now why Temple in early 80’s was a piss poor team!!! Look it up they sucked when he coached them too. I quit this F’ing team! FIRE LICHT AND BA, and ENTIRE STAFF, recruiters AND ALL….

  32. CB Oruwariye still on the board.
LB Vosen Joesph still on the board.
LB Wilson, LB Cameron Smith, and LB David Long still on the board.
LB Long was described as a “poor man’s” Devin Bush. When switching to a 3-4 with limited backup LBs and these guys on the board, Why not pick one of them. Yes I know Oruwariye is a CB and we loaded up on DBs. The point is he went off at the Combine and was considered a quality late pick for the Defense. For me the David Long is the most intriguing. Long was the number one LB at the combine in at least two separate categories. And he was fourth among LBs on speed. He was analyzed as a quality blitzing LB. You never know you might need somebody to fill in for a few weeks if White or David is recovering from some injury. Devante Bond has been a joke his whole time at Tampa. You can’t sign one of these listed LBs and get a more productive back up than Bond?

  35. First question: “Another kicker. What made you so confident?” Licht: “Well you know he’s a big guy with a big leg, and he’s also accurate so those are a lot of good things we like about him. He kicked in Utah but he can also kick at sea level, can kick it far at sea level as well.” hahahahaha well I don’t know about you guys but I’m convinced! Sea level kickers are so rare these days!

  38. I knew as soon as the drafting of a PK was announced the fans’ heads would explode. Even mine quaked a bit. I must say, I never thought Jason Licht would ever draft another PK after Roberto went from the best PK in NCAA history to a total stiff after his first kick boinked. If nothing else, Meathead has balls.

There are now three PK’s on the roster. Surely one of them (hopefully this young and inexpensive one) will be an improvement over what we’ve endured the past decade.

  39. I cut my attention span way back when it comes to anything Bucs after the Glazers screwed up hugely yet again by retaining Licht. But I noted that he screwed up free agency by letting our several of best players leave while keeping several not so best players, and then not replacing like for like with other free agents .. the theory being that the best teams are built from the draft. But then … Licht seems to have messed up most of the draft too. His best pick was simply to replace Kwon Alexander with someone who may or may not be like for like .. but if he hadn’t let Kwon go, there would be no need for the replacement. Then he drafted a bunch of CBs in a repeat of last year’s draft which produced yet another 5-11 season, second in a row.

    The hole is getting deeper.

I was never on the Bruce Arians is a God of Football crew either. He’s OK .. may or may not be better than the guy he replaced .. but it is very very clear that the Bucs, in terms of player quality, are weaker than they were last year, which was a very weak team.

Until the Baby Glazers quit trying to manage a team that they are clearly incompetent to manage – by stepping aside and firing Licht, and inviting a proven football executive to come in and clean house, the Bucs fans will continue our way too many years wandering in the wilderness of incompetency and badness.
