People don’t forget trying times, and Bucs linebacker Devin White certainly doesn’t.

In a postgame interview following Tampa Bay’s 20-10 win over the Saints on Sunday afternoon, White was asked why the team was so successful in winning the turnover battle. Without hesitation, the Pro Bowl linebacker credited the defense’s success to the quarterback play of New Orleans’ Jameis Winston, who was with the Bucs from 2015-2019.

“I mean, when Jameis [Winston] left our team, everybody knows what he did that last year,” White said. “And we felt like we had a great defense then, and you know, he threw 30 picks. We just knew he’d give us the ball and the running backs were going to cough it up. That’s something we came in talking about.”

Winston, of course, had 30 interceptions in his final season with the Bucs and ultimately cost them a playoff opportunity with his poor decision making. The Bucs were clearly excited to play their former quarterback and anticipated him making mistakes for them to capitalize on. The Saints have been trying to limit Winston in the passing game, but once the Bucs had taken the lead in the fourth quarter, New Orleans opened up the playbook. That’s when Tampa Bay’s defense struck.

The Bucs forced five turnovers on the day. Jamel Dean came away with two interceptions while Mike Edwards found the end zone with a 68-yard pick six. Fumbles by Chris Olave and Mark Ingram proved too difficult for the Saints to overcome in their 20-10 loss to Tampa Bay. White nearly had a pick-six himself and finished the game with 11 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble.

Expect White’s parting words from Sunday’s contest to come up again when the Bucs and Saints meet in Tampa for Monday Night Football on Dec. 5.
