Since January, PewterReport.com had LSU linebacker Devin White in all but one of our mock drafts, including the first two and the final two. We should have stuck with White throughout, especially after hearing White and head coach Bruce Arians on Thursday night.

“It was crazy, like I just know, and Coach Bruce said, ‘You’re a hell of a player, you’re probably going to be taken really, really, early, and if you’re still there at five, then I want you on my team,” White told the Tamp Bay media on a conference call soon after being drafted. “I want to help develop you.’ And when he said that, he was a man of his word.”

Is a video released by the Buccaneers, Arians reminded White of his promise, telling the horse-riding, leading tackler at LSU, and now fifth overall NFL Draft pick, “Ain’t never a doubt.”

Whether there was very much – if any – serious discussion of Tampa Bay considering Kentucky outside linebacker Josh Allen or Houston defensive tackle Ed Oliver at No. 5 instead in the Bucs’ war room on Thursday might never be known. It is apparent the team didn’t settle for White, and are ecstatic to have him in the building.

Day 2 of the draft begins tonight at 7 p.m. and the Buccaneers are slated to have the 39th pick(second round) and the 70th selection(third round). PewterReport.com will have live coverage once again on Friday night with our videocast and also again on Saturday.

Scott Reynolds has a list of possible Day 2 options and you can read that here.

Buc stops here

So all the people who were complaining about White and it will be Licht’s head if he does not work out – apparently Arians was all-in on this pick. So it is not going to be Licht’s head on the line if it does not work out – it will be both Arians and Licht in this together.

We all will find out if this all works out in the next two years or not – it will depend how much the team improves above 5-11.

Exactly, a lot of people are upset thinking this is all Jason Lichts fault for passing up on Allen but it isn’t! Arians wanted white too so I’ll trust the pick.

Allen may be great and good for him, but barring an injury, White will be the vocal leader of this defense that we haven’t had in years. The relying on Athleticism and high tackling scared me at first but there is almost no College players that are perfect in all aspects of their game and White seems intelligent enough and hard working and willing to perfect his game. Again, Alexander would get lost in a game for me, I used to joke with my Dad that on almost every play you would see Derrick Brooks in the screen, even if… Read more »

Im getting excited about the pick. I wanted the Bucs to pick an EDGE or DT and thought since Licht has been good at identifying linebackers later in the draft, he could get one then. Not gonna find a guy like this one in the 4th round though. This new guy is fast. I hope they go crazy adding more pieces around him.

He becomes the most dynamic player on Defense! He is a natural leader who is vocal about it and has the talent to make teammates listen! This is just what this new Defense needed! A leader who can talk the talk and hit u with murderous intentions! This Buc fan is excited about this pick! Will have the popcorn ready for Day 2 tonight! Go Bucs! Prefer the biggest/baddest highest ranked OL for pick number 2…I’m just saying

I might be mistaken but I don’t remember Derrick Brooks being the leader of the defense. I believe it was first Hardy Nickerson then Sapp followed; Lynch probably made some noise too.

Yea Horse… Former 1st Round pick, 11x Pro Bowl player, Defensive Player of the Year, 14 years with the Bucs and he won a Super Bowl with the Bucs…how could Derrick Brook be considered a Defensive Leader of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers! That’s just nonsense! Probably in the top 3 Buccaneers of all time! But he wasn’t a Buccaneer Defensive leader?! Please!

You are totally misunderstanding what I am saying. Of course Derek Brooks is the best Buccaneer ever, and Lee Roy selmon is right behind him. They were mostly silent leaders setting the example of their high performances as a player and as a team member.

McCoy is a silent leader as well as LVD. But the Bucs now have a vocal leader in White.

My reply doesn’t work either. Not sure why some folks are able to reply. As Jon Gruden would say, “There needs to be an investigation.”

When a team picks for needs first, the coach will be fired. White seems to be the best player to fit our need. The question is if he was really the best person available?
