The Bucs held their first of two joint practices with the Jaguars on Tuesday morning. Tampa Bay traveled to Jacksonville on Monday, while the Pewter Report crew made the drive over just before practice began at 9:30 AM this morning. Rather than just doing one studs and duds list, there were enough of us on-site to split it up between the offense and defense.

From the offensive side of things, how did the team fare? Here is the breakdown of the best and worst performances.

Offensive Studs From Bucs-Jaguars Joint Practice

WR Ted Hurst III

The Bucs’ offense struggled to move the football throughout much of Tuesday’s practice, but the saving grace for Baker Mayfield was when he connected with Ted Hurst III. Hurst once again had the chance at extended reps with the first team as Emeka Egbuka and Jalen McMillan were held out. It was clear that Mayfield favored him over Chris Godwin Jr., with the first target to the third-round pick being one of the best moments on either side of the football.

While it was not the sharpest day by No. 6 (see below), the biggest gains for the offense were when he threw it to his 6-foot-4 wide receiver. Hurst then had a couple of wins later in practice, as he lined up one-on-one with Jaguars cornerback Travis Hunter in what was an entertaining, give-and-take battle.

LT Tristan Wirfs

With not many offensive players standing out as studs, Tristan Wirfs deserves mention as he took the field and participated in 11-on-11s for the first time all summer. Wirfs is being brought back into the field slowly, as he took a snap or two before coming off the field. He also got in a little work in one-on-ones and was seen going full speed during warmups. Seeing the All-Pro left tackle out there in action is a win.

Offensive Duds From Bucs-Jaguars Joint Practice

QB Baker Mayfield

Baker Mayfield had the kind of morning he wished he had back. Mayfield struggled with his accuracy, even to Ted Hurst. He overthrew the large wide receiver multiple times, and there were several instances where he just did not click with who he was throwing it to. Late in practice, he threw a gimmie interception to Jaguars safety Antoinio Johnson where there was no target in sight.

That was Mayfield’s second interception of practice after he made an ill-advised attempt at placing a ball between two Jacksonville defenders, with it being picked off by cornerback Montaric Brown. To an extent, the offensive line did not do him any favors giving up pressure to Josh Hines-Allen and others, but there has to be better all-around decision-making moving forward.

Bucs Run Game

The Bucs run game struggled quite a bit against the Jaguars’ defense.

Time and time again, the attempts by the running back room proved futile as they were met at the line of scrimmage. Baker Mayfield was not lying in his analysis after practice that the offense lacked physicality, and they were not able to match the energy of Jacksonville’s front seven.

There were a couple of solid gains, but they were running into a wall they could not break through.

TEs Payne Durham and Devin Culp

The Bucs’ tight end room remains an uninspiring group.

Payne Durham and Devin Culp did little to quell that notion throughout practice. Baker Mayfield found Payne Durham during the goal line period, and for a moment, he caught it and was fighting to reach the end zone. As Durham was inching closer, he took a shot and the ball came loose for a fumble. The lack of sure hands from the position group was also evident with Devin Culp.

Culp had two bad drops, including one where Jalon Daniels threw a laser across the middle that just fell through his hands. Both of them were disappointing and did not do the offense any favors.

RT Luke Goedeke

As much as I think Luke Goedeke has been an underappreciated badass over the past couple of seasons, it is hard to ignore his recent struggles. Goedeke has had a difficult battle with first-round pick Rueben Bain Jr. over the past month of training camp. Bain has gotten the better of him several times, and Jaguars defensive end Josh Hines-Allen did the same on Tuesday.

Hines-Allen bullied Goedeke in one-on-ones as the right tackle fell to the ground. Then he allowed pressure several times to him, including what would have been a sack.

It was one of the worst performances I have seen Goedeke have in a long time.
