The Bucs officially picked up the fifth-year option for linebacker Devin White on Wednesday. Pewter Report originally reported this would happen months ago. Now, Tampa Bay has officially locked in White for the 2023 season.
The Bucs drafted White with the fifth overall pick in 2019. His original contract was for four years and a fully guaranteed $29,315,814. As White was a first-round draft pick, it also included a team option for a fifth year. The Bucs are now electing to pick that up. Based on the NFL collective bargaining agreement the option will be worth a projected $11,706,000 per OverTheCap.com due to White’s playing time over the course of his first three seasons.
Over the course of his first three seasons in Tampa Bay White has amassed 359 tackles, 27 tackles for loss, four forced fumbles, six fumbles recovered, 10 passes defensed, one interception, and two touchdowns while starting 45 games. White was also selected to the Pro Bowl last year.
Pewter Report broke the news that the team would be exercising White’s fifth year option back in February. This marks the sixth consecutive year the team has picked up the fifth-year option on their first round-pick. That stretch includes every first-round pick during the Jason Licht era and includes Mike Evans, Jamies Winston, Vernon Hargreaves III, O.J. Howard, Vita Vea, and now White. All of those players played that fifth year with the exception of Hargreaves, who was cut mid-way through the 2019 season.
