Winning is everything, but having a plan on how you get there is certainly just as important as wanting to get there.

One of the elements of that plan is to keep the guys you drafted that you know are good, and as of Tuesday, that is the case with Buccaneers’ offensive guard Ali Marpet, who signed a 6-year extension with the franchise.

Per Mike Garafolo, Marpet’s new extension is for $55 million with $27.125 million guaranteed.

PewterReport.com has confirmed that Marpet will average $10.825 mil per year.

Great – now can someone explain why we won’t give Cappa even a chance at RT (he played Tackle in college – admittedly at a small school). Dotson is a shell of his former self – whether due to his knee or age, could Cappa be worse?

Cappa is not ready, why we drafted a projected 5th rounder in the 3rd is beyond me..

…because our GM is a genius?

A couple reasons… 1. Cappa hasn’t played Tackle with the Bucs. 2. He made too many mental mistakes in the run game in Preseason. 3. He missed too much at guard in pass pro and playing tackle is arguably harder (different games mainly speed vs. power). 3. Just because he is a third round pick doesn’t mean he is ready. It’s all about the 3rd/4th year for most draft picks. He’ll get his chance, just takes some patience and good coaching.

Yes, of course I jest – but only a little as the play of Dotson has been uninspiring. And I accept your 2nd and 3rd points as clearly the reason moving from the frying pan of Dotson into the fire of Cappa wouldn’t help. However, I would take issue with your conclusion that teams have to wait until the 3rd or 4th year to see results from their high round draft picks…I accept that may be Licht’s plan, but it’s a terrible plan and not one that any other team follows.

Yeah, if anything, you’d slide Ben. out and put Cappa at guard, but even that makes me sad… and you’d think they couldn’t do much worse than last game Bears

As of right now, moving Evan Smith into the starting RG position is the best move for the team. Benoch has probably hit his ceiling, and Cappa is a rookie and developing. With more playing time under his belt, I could see Cappa starting as soon as next season

Good extension regarding Marpet.

Go Bucs! Fire them cannons!

Great news. We have drafted well enough to extend some of our own. That’s what plagued this franchise for years, good to see it subsiding

Yes Capps could be worse.

Good signing, maybe Licht can throw a 4th or 5th to Buffalo and get McCoy. A back that can catch and make ppl miss might be worth a flier since we sure as hell cant find a RB any other way.

One day we will stop attempting to assemble an all boys choir and put the best players on the field. The last time we won we had players that some would consider a “cancer” in todays game. Hopefully when Licht’s fired he can say he at least lost with some really classy players lol.

Who says it’s a good signing Licht? Marpet has been ok. Probably had his development stunted by that moronic switch to Center then back to Guard. Another bonehead Licht move. Season over. We get smoked Sunday by Atlanta. This team sucks!

Marpet was listed as a top 10 center last season by Bleacher Report.

Our best Offensive Lineman. He deserves it. It’s too bad Cappa has looked so bad. We will have to go back to the well next year and pick up more Offensive lineman and Defensive backs, and probably a Defensive lineman or two.

We have some work to do on our line, smith is gonna want to get paid, Dotson is likely retiring, Caleb is just a back up. I don’t see smith coming back depending on how much he thinks he’s worth.

To clear up the term of Marpet’s deal. Some are saying that Marpet got a 6 year extension. Depends on where you read about it but they all mean the same thing. Marpet got a 6 year contract with a 5 year extension through 2023. Marpet’s new contract replaces his original deal for the current 2018 season and extends five more years, through 2023.

Marpet has been a stud from Day 1. Well deserved and Congrats to him.

I understand there is a spectrum of opinions but at a base level I think we all agree Marpet is good. And also that $27 mill guaranteed is a lot of money.

If anything this proves the point that teams don’t let talented lineman get away in FA, i.e., Licht’s strategy of not consistently using high picks on the lines is fatally flawed. It gives me no pleasure saying this, but it will almost certainly be his undoing.

I would not be in a hurry to sign Kwon to an extension, he’s done nothing to deserve one so far this season. If we did, we would have two highly paid L.B.’s under performing instead of one. If we stay with a 4-3 defense next year Kwon might be better suited to play the weak side, moving the bigger Beckwith to the middle, and moving on from David’s contract. The Bucs need to stop shelling out money to defenders on maybe the worst defense in the NFL. Grimes, Kwon, David, McCoy, our so called stars do not deserve to… Read more »
