With Blaine Gabbert due to miss some time after dislocating his left shoulder in Friday night’s game, the Bucs have signed quarterback Vincent Testaverde Jr. to the roster. In order to make room for him, the Bucs waived rookie outside linebacker Khazin Daniels.

Testaverde Jr. has already been on the Bucs twice this season, first participating in rookie mini-camp in May, and then signing again with Tampa Bay during training camp on July 28th before getting released on August 7th. He had nine practices with the Bucs in that time.

The Bucs are thin at quarterback right now after Gabbert’s injury as undrafted free agent Nick Fitzgerald has been sidelined for all of camp with a hamstring issue.

Third string quarterback Ryan Griffin, who’s been having a great preseason, now slides up to the second string behind Jameis Winston.

With those corresponding moves, coach Bruce Arians would prefer to not play Griffin at all in their final preseason game against the Cowboys to prevent another injury, and even mentioned that they were considering looking at Testaverde Jr. in his press conference on Saturday.

Since the Bucs are set with their quarterbacks for the regular season barring the outcome of how long Gabbert could be out, they only need a quarterback for week four of the preseason.

Given Testaverde Jr.’s experience with the team and knowledge of the system, he would be more up to speed with the game just a week out as opposed to another free agent quarterback that were to be signed.

  6. I disagree with PR staff.

Watching how the backup OL play will be very important as well as the backup WR’s and backup LBs and DBs.

This fourth game will also show which players improve based on the guidance of this coaching staff and which players sink.

  7. Iv’e always had a problem carrying 3 QB’s. It’s a lot like saying we can’t teach a center who can snap under center, shotgun, but can’t double as a LS. To use roster spots for 3rd QB’s and LS seems like a waste. However this year when you lose your #2 QB indefinetly late in the training camp I can see the logic of a 3rd QB. At least Vinny will get some much needed film for his resume.

  10. It sure makes me feel old when I had a chance to cheer for two generations of Testaverdes. Good opportunity for the youngster.

  12. I think Ryan Griffin has done enough to earn the #2 spot even if Gabbert were healthy.

    • Griffin does nothing until late in the game against camp fodder. Check the game play record. He’s a 30 year old playing against UDFA just out of college.

  13. I find it fascinating that despite the fact Griffin played in place of Gabbert when he got hurt – and outplayed him against the same defense on the field, Arians insists on Gabbert remaining #2. If he is so set on Gabbert, shouldn’t Griffin actually play in the fourth preseason game? Or is the plan they will play Testaverde Jr. the most, and then cut him immediately after the game ends? The whole situation just seems a mess after Winston.

  14. How you figure Grif outplay Gabbert against the same defense? Blaine took the team 54 yards to the 16 and first down. Ryan stalled there. He had one net yard in the same number of snaps as Blaine after Gabbert left the game.
