The Tampa Bay Buccaneers confirmed on Monday that they’ve signed former Packers safety Kentrell Brice to a one-year deal.

As reported by Pewter Report earlier in the day, Brice was in Tampa visiting the Buccaneers while multiple teams had reportedly shown interest in the fourth-year defensive back.

The formerly undrafted free agent spent the last three seasons with Green Bay and Brice played in 36 games over three years with the Packers, starting 14 of them, while accumulating 91 total tackles, one interception, one sack and one tackle for loss.

Brice ended the 2017 season on the injured reserve before posting a career-high 50 total tackles over 14 games in 2018.

  1. Solid player coming off the bench. I think this is to add some depth at the position. They are going to have to do things like this for the defense.

  2. That is surprising! With so many safties out there. Must have liked the upside and his visit today.

It seems that a veteran CB is next on the list before the draft.

  3. I hope we’re getting some solid depth players this FA period. That’s been part of the large mix of problems we’ve had for years, especially in the secondary. We lost of our two best players in the secondary early in the season last year, and it obviously hurt, although how much of it was the lack of depth and how much of it was coaching is certainly debatable.

  4. Brice also brings lumber and tackling ability. Worth a look as he is only 24 years old with NFL experience. Go Bucs!

  5. Printing money over at OBP. Don’t know much about the guy, but it should be a young and energetic safety room with Evans, Whitehead, Johnson, Stewart, Bucannon, and Brice.

  6. I’m ready to see what this coaching staff is able to do with this roster. A lot of players are on one year deals or their contracts will expire after this year. I suspect this is a plan by the staff to create an ultra competitive roster with guys fighting for their careers. This is an approach we have not seen on this team in awhile. No one is going to be sitting back counting their money with 2 or 3 years guaranteed. Very similar to what happens in New England and they get the most out of players that knows about. Very interesting

  7. After reading an article on rookie caps on overthecap’s site since the only the top 51 salaries count against the cap we should sign as many of these guys as we can and draft as many 6th and 7th round picks as possible. We could find a few gems.

  8. Yeah the Bucs be wise to keep bringing in vets for one year deals (eg CB, LB). See which players sticks and which players need to be shipped out.

  9. I like this signing for both depth and potential. He was a non-combine(lack of experience, name school) traits stud who should be coming into his own.

  11. The philosophy we seem to be taking is “it’s all about the coaching”.

We have removed a few (arguably) reasonable players (Djax, Kwon, Humphries, Curry – guys that had meaningful snaps for us anyway); added a few backup/depth/ST free agents (I guess Buccannon is the prize FA?); we’re out of cap space; we’ll still add a rookie or two that can contribute meaningful snaps (hopefully a very good one in the 1st).

That sounds a lot like bringing back the team that went 5-11 for the second year running, with new coaches.

I’m all for the Arians bandwagon (I may be riding shotgun) – but really? The same team. We didn’t see any more urgency in changing personnel after 10 wins in two entire seasons? Very nervous at this juncture!

  12. Will be interested if this is another one year contract – seems to be a pre-requisite for our signings this year.

Looking at this after the first couple months, the front office decided to keep GMC, pay D. Smith and some other marginal guys with sizable contact. That leaves little $$$ to add any real impact players. Being cash strapped, they decided to add an incredible number of position coaches, even specializing within the positions, to focus on coaching these guys up.

Hopefully we get a couple of starters out of the draft. Jamies settles down and has a decent year. We win a couple of those close games we’ve been losing the past couple years and we end up 8-8.

  13. Bucs signed S Kentrell Brice, formerly of the Packers, to a one-year contract.
A shaky reserve for the Packers over the past three seasons, Brice’s main skill was gobbling up snaps. He has just one career pick in 36 games and has not been an asset against the run. Even with an up for grabs depth chart at safety in Tampa, Brice’s ceiling is probably No. 3 duties.

  15. Another solid player to compete. Nothing wrong with as many players at each position as possible to see who shines. Sometimes it’s the system that holds some guys back. They see something they like. He has speed and that’s been lacking in secondary for sure.

  17. It’s already been stated by PR and I agree, the previous coaching regime was not good.

With that said, dare I say we missed Chris Conte and Keith Tandy’s veteran presence last year among this young secondary?? Not saying having those two all of last season would’ve made a huge difference as we all learned the coaching from Mike Smith and some of the staff was a detriment for sure.

Love the Brice signing and the Bucannon signing! And I think the others on our defensive roster will be receiving better coaching moving forward with BA, Todd Bowles and staff. Defense MUST get better for us to improve from 5-11. GO BUCS!!

  19. Keep em coming! By the end of preseason we will know more about who fits and who doesn’t. Everyone’s being signed on prove it deals which is great for competition and keeping them fighting for their careers throughout the year. I’m loving this mentality of not getting comfortable!

  20. BA needs to make sure Brice avoids helmet to helmet hits like channel 8 showed him targeting a Dallas Cowboy for a vicious hit on their 11:00 pm news. However the sports person never mentioned that was targeting.

  21. He has potential to play if someone goes down so that makes me really like the signing. Playing 14 games last year shows he has skills on the field and we can utilize him if needed. I do like what what Mizzou said that a lot of these guys are on 1 year deals and we will have a really competitive roster.

  25. Buc-Ass-Bob aka Dumb-Ass-Bob………Players are free agents generally due to aging skills/abilities, salary cap issue or salary demand discrepancy, coaching changes/philosophies, etc. That doesn’t leave many starters, Pro Bowl players, or Hall of Fame potentials. Perhaps Madden 19 is more conducive to your arm-chair GM mentality…..or something., etc.
