Tampa Bay head coach Bruce Arians sounded the alarm bells at the AdventHealth Training Center two weeks ago before the team made the trek to London to face a red hot Carolina team. The Bucs were coming off a road loss to the Saints and had dropped to 2-3 on the year and 1-1 in the NFC South.

“If we truly have leadership, we don’t lose two in a row,” Arians said. “That’s when your leaders show up, so this is a big game.”

So did Tampa Bay’s leaders show up last Sunday in London?

Nope.

And the Bucs lost two games in a row as a result.

Of the five players that wear C’s on their chest, only outside linebacker and defensive captain Carl Nassib and running back and special teams captain Dare Ogunbowale had decent games.

Nassib recorded six tackles, which was second on the team against the Panthers, in addition to two quarterback hits and a sack, which was his second of the year. Ogunbowale had a three-yard touchdown run, the first of his career, and three catches for 22 yards, including a 21-yard screen pass.

Inside linebacker and defensive captain Lavonte David had a rather pedestrian game with six tackles and no splash plays, but the other three captains – quarterback Jameis Winston, wide receiver Mike Evans, left guard Ali Marpet – played poorly.

Winston had a disastrous performance with a career-high five interceptions and a fumble. He managed to throw for 400 yards, but only had one touchdown and two successful two-point conversion attempts.

Winston is 2-1 in games in which he has completed over 60 percent of his passes this year, but he’s 0-3 when completing less than 60 percent. In fact, in losses against San Francisco, New Orleans and Carolina, Winston has completed an identical 55.6 percent of his passes versus all three of those opponents.

After suffering six sacks the previous week in New Orleans, Winston was sacked six times in the first half alone by Carolina, and was harassed all day by former teammate Gerald McCoy, who had 2.5 sacks, including the Panthers’ seventh and final sack in the second half.

“There were three or four sacks [where] he sacked himself,” Arians said. “Incompletions don’t get you beat – sacks and sack-fumbles get you beat. We’ve been working and working, and this was one of those games where we try and make a play out of nothing and it comes back to bite you.”

Bucs WR Mike Evans

McCoy’s first sack of the game came against Marpet, who was beaten one-on-one. Marpet had a hand in allowing sacks by Malcolm Brown and Carl Granderson last week in New Orleans, and also passed off Carolina’s Dontari Poe to center Ryan Jensen a little prematurely to help Donovan Smith with a double team block on Mario Addison, while Poe beat Jensen for the Panthers’ second sack of the game. Marpet also had a holding call on Poe that negated a 13-yard completion to Evans in the first half.

Evans admitted that he “played like sh*t” after the Bucs’ loss in London, and was lackadaisical on both of James Bradberry’s picks, which came on Winston’s first and last throws of the game.

On Tampa Bay’s first offensive play of the game, Bradberry knifed in front of Evans, who didn’t run a great route, according to Arians, and stole the ball to set up Carolina’s first field goal. On the last play of the game, Winston went to Evans, who was matched up on Bradberry one-on-one, but failed to turn around quick enough in the end zone to either catch the pass for a touchdown or break up the interception.

Evans finished the game with nine catches for 96 yards on 17 targets, along with a two-point conversion catch, but bobbled and dropped a perfectly thrown deep pass from Winston at the Panthers’ 25-yard line right before halftime that could have helped cut into Carolina’s 17-7 lead.

During Monday’s press conference, Arians was asked what his message was to the players during the bye week.

Bucs head coach Bruce Arians – Photo by: Cliff Welch/PR

“Learn how to prepare better,” Arians said. “We’re still making way too many mental errors in critical situations.”

That sounded like a direct message to his team captains, who need to fix their own play first, and then the play of their respective units, in advance of Tampa Bay’s next game, which is in Nashville next Sunday against Tennessee.

  1. Lavonte David has a pedestrian game?

    1) He has his best graded game of the year (which was just below elite).

    2) He recorded 4 Stops (tackles where his role in things constituted a loss for the opposition).

    3) He gave up ONE YARD TOTAL on the 4 Targets against him in Pass Defense.

    That is not pedestrian.

  2. NFL teams are worth over $1 billion so When looking for a captain and placing a face on your franchise find one with multiple Arrests
    Shoplifting
    Destruction of property charges
    Charges of rape
    Charges of filming the rape
Sexual misconduct in an Uber vehicle
Someone who will go on national TV and eat their fingers.
And then wonder why there’s so much negative and crap on your team wonder why there’s so much losing and bringing that negative force and putting it in your locker room no other NFL teams that stupid.

I’m certain the Broncos are your team so that must be why you are in such a foul mood after the whipping they took from a Mahomeless team last night.

  7. The first play of the game, and pick by Jameis was NOT Evans fault Scott. First off, Jameis looks at Evans as soon as the ball was snapped telling the defense where he was throwing. Notice Luke moves towards where Jameis is looking taking the inside away where the ball needs to be thrown. So dumb ass Jameis throws it to his outside shoulder where the DB is in a perfect spot for the pick. It’s unbelievable everyone is blaming Evans for a pass that never should’ve been thrown to him. If Jameis was worth a crap he would’ve quickly moved to his second option Brate who was wide open where Luke just vacated over the middle five friggin yards in front of MR. Magoo. Jameis is to blame, first by staring Evans down, then not seeing Brate wide open when Evans was double covered. The excuses have to stop. Some of us watch the game over too Scott, and can plainly see what Jameis isn’t doing right, and is doing wrong. Winston does not process information quickly, he still stares down his receivers never looking the DB’s off. He has a slow delivery plus he pats the ball before throwing it making it even slower. If his first read is covered he’ll either force the ball anyway, or run around the field like an escaped mental patient until he’s sacked, fumbles, or both. Stop the excuses, he sucks!!

Kuechly had the underneath coverage to the left and the receiver has to work back and/or more outside to the QB allowing the for a throwing lane. Jameis made the right sight adjustment and threw with anticipation the ME13 would slightly adjust the route.

The Bucs will win consistently when we get a Qb with proper fundamentals. This team could probably win with Matt Moore at QB. 11. One thing I have always hated about lichts drafting is that he tends to go after the “nice guys” or “good guys” and while I do love character guys and how we have very little distractions from them, none of them are truly upset about losing, making noise. We saw it from past seasons, it’s always just “we got to do better” talk and not one guy goes and calls people our or holds anyone accountable. Bruce may do it, but the players that are “leaders” really need to step it up. I still feel like the team lacks a true hard nosed football player to set the tone and until we start going after these alpha male type players, we will continue to lack in that area. Don’t get me wrong, I love LVD and Evans, but I wish they would get nastier at times.

  13. Why don’t you folks who feel the need to subject us to your on-going, on-line banter would exchange phone numbers and hook-up somewhere? I’ll bet when you take down your protective computer screens and sit face to face the conversation will be more civil. I’ll bet there is a lot on which you could agree.

The issue I have is that some “fans” actually seem to want the team, and particularly Jameis Winston, to fail. They constantly dig up anything that they believe will prove their point. But why do they find the need to do this? Because the words, “I told you so” are what gives them pleasure more than their team winning.

We all know Winston has at least some questionable behavior in his past (most of us do), we all know his play has been erratic. After the London fiasco (seen live by Scubog) many devotees are questioning whether Winston should remain on the team in 2020 or if we should be, as the song goes, “starting all over again”.

But shouldn’t we all want him to succeed? After all, isn’t that the best outcome?

I’ve supported Winston but I’ve also called him out when he’s performed terribly. He’s on the last straw this year unless he picks it up. A few on here disappear when he has a great game but are the first to post when he screws up. I’m here regardless. It irks me when someone puts words I’m my mouth that I never said. It’s time 2 move on already. This team has many areas it can improve in, but to loose winnable games because your QB cant get out of his own way is simply frustrating. Now as for the comment about being face to face with another Buc fan with a different opinion would change my personal stance on my opinions is redicoulus. It’s winnable game for sure. See if this O line can play better because it was garbage in London and not just the right side replacements! Winston needs to calm down and play smart. He has 10 games left To evaluate. Lot of proving to do in those games after that clunker.

Hargreaves and most of secondary has been horrible. This is Evans worst year not sure if he’s hurt or his head isn’t right.

  15. Scu, I don’t want Jameis to fail, he’s doing that all by himself. In my posts I never mention what he’s done off the field, because I’ve always believed his past troubles were overblown, and in the past. I strictly go by what I see on the field, and don’t attack other posters personally, even Bob. It’s just maddening that educated fans, and Scott himself blame Evans for not coming back to a ball that was thrown into double coverage when Jameis’s second read was wide open, and he never went to it. The excuses have to stop. Fact, Winston has more turnovers then any other QB since he came into the league. That’s what we as fans should be concerned with, and so far Jameis hasn’t done anything to prove that those of us who don’t think he has what it takes are wrong.

  16. Come on, guys. As Rodney King famously said, “Can’t we all just get along?” Personal attacks on someone because they disagree with your point of view is wrong period. It is a lot of what is wrong with society today. You can love the Bucs and still criticize them, just like you hopefully point out to your loved ones when they have gone off the tracks. If you don’t then you run the risk of being an enabler. I have stuck with the Bucs since the beginning and have seen many, many more stinkers than sweet. It is what it is and no amount of personal attacks changes that. It is out of frustration year after year that we can’t say that lipstick on the pig turns it into Cinderella. Jameis is not a franchise quarterback 5 years in. How long will it take? Another 5 years? How long will it be “it’s not you, it’s me”? Perhaps it’s all because of continually changing coaches and players, shades of Hugh Culverhouse? Poor drafting? Very poor scouting? Or all of the above. Bottom line is more of the same got old a long time ago. What do you expect people to think?

I know I am a frustrated fan at this point as there has just been too many failed seasons. Maybe you know something more than I do about the owners? The last 13 years the father wasn’t running the organization and the kids tried their best, but failed. Oh they’ve been very successful in making many millions, but mostly not winnable seasons. What’s your take as I value your input?.

    • Horse: There’s no question that the team hasn’t had the success any of us expected since the championship season. The one constant has been the second generation of Glazers. We’ve had new GM’s, new coaches, new QB’s, new players, new corny slogans and a drum line. I have no doubt that the “baby Glazers” as Naples calls them, want to win as badly as we do and have invested millions trying to accomplish that elusive feat. For whatever reason, whatever they’re doing hasn’t worked. Got to be them………right?

It’s always easy to blame the QB. After 5 years of Jameis, it’s hard to defend the results on the field. The game in London was another game in which the Bucs outplayed the opponent and lost, in large part because of the erratic play of #3. How frustrating and demoralizing it must be for his teammates when the first play is an INT. Sure killed the mood for the Scubog family.

I am running out of patience with Jameis and the team. Apathy is setting in as I age.
