Well, it’s finally official. The Bucs will be wearing their famous creamsicle uniform for a game this season. Amid the new Devin White saga, the Bucs dropped a video on social media on Wednesday morning with the announcement that the Bucco Bruce throwback uniforms are back this year.

The video involves Tampa Bay’s former Bucco Bruce mascot, wearing a bright orange jacket and writing down the words “I’m Back” in homage to NBA legend Michael Jordan writing the same words in a letter to announce he was coming out of retirement. The end of the video shows the Bucco Bruce logo with an orange background, further signifying the news.

Bucs Had To Wait An Extra Year For Creamsicles

The Bucs announced in late February of last year that the jerseys would make their return in 2023 due to supply chain challenges.

Many Bucs fans have been clamoring to see the creamsicle jerseys for a throwback at least once a season. It’s considered a fan favorite to most. Former head coach Bruce Arians even stated previously that he felt they were one of the best uniforms in football.

The Bucs haven’t worn the creamsicles since the 2012 season. This was because the NFL implemented a rule in 2013 that each team could only have one helmet per player for safety reasons. Since the Bucs’ primary colors are red and pewter, the white and orange creamsicle helmet with a red jersey would not make sense or match.

Initially, the NFL announced in June of 2021 that throwbacks could return in 2022. Other teams were able to wear it last season, but the Bucs had to wait a year.

Tampa Bay had the creamsicles as their primary jersey when the franchise began in 1976. They had those colors all the way up until 1998 when they switched to red and pewter. In 2014, the Bucs altered their jersey to alarm clock numbers and a hint of orange to go with the main colors. Many (myself included) consider those renditions the worst jerseys in team history.

Thankfully, they went to more traditional-looking jerseys with red, pewter and white and regular numbers again for 2020. They won Super Bowl LV the first year they made the change.

Even former Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady showed his appreciation for the old orange and white uniform last season by wearing a Doug Williams jersey and posting it on his Instagram story. Brady later revealed that it was a gift give to him by Williams.

Though it wasn’t enough to lure him out of retirement, it’s nice that the greatest QB of all time finds the joy in the jersey like many others do.

The creamsicles hold a special place for Bucs fans, especially the old school folks. Even those around the league acknowledge that when it comes to throwback uniforms, it’s the Bucs – followed by everyone else.
