On a day where the weather could not have been more perfect for football in Tampa Bay, unfortunately for the Buccaneers, the good weather didn’t yield a good result on the scoreboard, as they fell to Washington by a score of _________
The Buccaneers won the toss and elected to receive the ball first, something that head coach Dirk Koetter said he’s wanted to do, as the offense is the strength of his team. Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick got the Bucs offense rolling early with big throws to Mike Evans and O.J. Howard, but as they got into the red zone Fitzpatrick overthrew running back Shaun Wilson and cornerback Josh Norman took it away for the first interception of the game.
On Washington’s first possession of the game, they couldn’t do anything off the turnover and the Bucs defense held firm with a three-and-out.
On the Bucs next drive, they converted on one first down for 41 yards on the drive, but it ultimately stalled, as well, and they were forced to punt the ball right back in a scoreless game.
After that, Washington’s offense got into rhythm and quarterback Alex Smith drove the team down the field 55 yards in eight plays to kick an easy field goal for Dustin Hopkins. That gave them the first lead of the game at 3-0.
The Bucs offense was able to settle down themselves and travel 63 yards in 13 plays, but once again couldn’t punch the ball into the end zone and had to attempt a short field goal. However, it was missed by Catanzaro, who now leads the league in missed field goals.
After holding Washington to another three-and-out the Bucs offense got the ball close but had to settle for a field goal. This one connected to tie the game at 3-3. Washington responded with a quick field goal of their own to make the score 6-3 at the half.
After holding the Redskins to a punt on their first possession of the second half, the Bucs were able to march the ball right down the field on their ensuing possession. However, another stalled drive left them with a field goal try, and the result was another missed field goal by Catanzaro.
Following the Bucs missed field goal, the Washington offense was able to get right down the field on the Bucs defense and scored the first touchdown of the game to extend their lead to 13-3. To add insult to injury, on the Bucs next drive Fitzpatrick threw an interception on his own side of the field which led to another field goal by Washington and a score of 16-3.
After the field goal the Bucs did start to drive with some momentum once again, but just as they got into Washington territory, a fumble by running back Jacquizz Rodgers gave the ball right back to the Redskins with the wind then totally out of Tampa Bay’s sails.
The Bucs had a drive that went all the way to the goal line following a Redskins punt, but a fumble off a sack gave it back to Washington with no damage done. After a few runs, and a few first downs, that was all she wrote and the Bucs fell by a final score of 16-3.
