Jameis Winston can count on one person having his back, that would be his top receiver, Mike Evans. As you may know, Winston has a one-year team option left on his contract next season, and today Evans answered whether or not Winston deserves to be here longer.

“Do I think? Yes, absolutely,” Evans said. “You got to look at the numbers, he’s a young guy, look at all the other young quarterback’s numbers when they were at his point of his career, and where he’s been. Tampa hasn’t been the easiest place to win, so, what he’s done is pretty impressive to me.”

Evans would be familiar with the difficulty of winning in Tampa. His rookie year he saw the Bucs go 2-14, which landed them Jameis Winston. These two players have been at the forefront of trying to turn around a decade-long drought in the playoffs, with their closest efforts coming from a 9-7 record in 2016.

This 2018 season has fallen short once more, due in part to a high amount turnovers and uncertainty at choosing a starting quarterback. Through all of that, Evans believes in Winston, seeing the hard work he’s put in every day, even when he hasn’t been the starter.

“Jameis has done an awesome job,” Evans said. “As far as handling the situation he’s been put in, he’s one of the toughest guys I’ve been around. He prepares each week like he’s starting, Fitz did as well, so, I know it’s a difficult situation for them.”

The final year on his contract is not guaranteed except for injury. Winston certainly has his detractors, and his future on the Bucs is unknown, but he does have the support of the best receiver on this team, and that can go a long way for him.

  1. Agree, before this season he’s put up great numbers for his first 3 years. This year has been filled with distractions that he brought to himself but if he plays good the rest of the season we give it to him. I would rather extend him for 3 year 25 million contract. About 7-8 million a year filled with performance boosters and have Jamies bet on himself. I think it would push him to new levels and help him to make better decisions with the ball. Ik this probably won’t happen but this is what I want the front office to do with Winston.

  2. I am fine with him getting another year as the suspension did not help his development at all. He probably will get it too either with a new GM and coach or not. However his next year will be his last unless he continues to improve by then.

  3. Assuming that there will be a new regime in town next year; let them make the final call. Lets remember that Goff was a complete bust under the last coach and McVey figured it out.

    • Bucs are in a pickle with Winston. If he balls out next year, Bucs are going to owe big time money to him. Or they can try to lock him up for another 3 years at a cheaper price (with more guaranteed) to him to lure him to sign. I don’t know, I’m not proclaiming what we should do just discussion options. Either way, Bucs are getting the short straw here.

  4. why so much love for Winston ????? Has he proved to be worthy of the 1st pick in the draft or has he been passed by by qb’s taken after him on teams with lesser weapons. He is accurate throwing the football or just average with so many weapons? Didn’t he cost his school Big $$ following
female issues with charges of rape .. Did you see Winston (video) in the cafe screaming the nastiest things he wanted done to some female in front of other students . Didn’t Winston “borrow” crap legs from Publix and tried to lie his way out which the employee and publix both said the items were not given to him? Didn’t Winston forget to tell the nfl and team and the incident with the uber driver and then lied saying he was with another guys? Did he put his team 1st and state he is not allowed on uber and why? Did he try to hide from the truth again which got him suspended ? would you want him to be the face our beloved bucs nationally?? humm (just my opinion)

  5. I believe with the right OC/HC Jameis can be easily a top 10 QB in this league. No one can win with the worst defense in the history of the NFL. Jameis is 24 with 4 years experience that’s hard to find. I know he has to fix the turnovers but a different offensive scheme and better defense can help. He is the best chance this team has for any success in the near future. I’m not from Florida I’m not a gators fan or a noles fan but I am a Bucs fan and I want Jameis to be successful.

  6. Regardless of how anyone feels about Winston, he is far from the major problem.
This draft I hope will focus on Defense and I hope the focus stays there.
    Go Bucs!

  7. Actually, if u take emotion out of it, it becomes a simple question. Is Jameis a $100 million dollar QB? &100 million dollar QBs have the ability to win a game by themselves despite the play of their team on a given Sunday. Like Brady, Rodgers, Big Ben, Drew Brees…Jamesis has not shown this ability in my opinion. Certainly not at the expense of not being able to pay other players who might be derserving of a raise but will have to be let go due to cap hit this type of salary has on a team! We have too many weaknesses to give Jamesis this type of money for his production. Now if he were to sign a 10-13 million a year, that would be more appropriate for his production. Remember… Jamesis could win his next 10 starts in a row and he would still not be a .500 QB…I’m just saying

    • You do realize 100 million for a qb right now is the going rate? Mike glennon got 18 million for one year, as crazy as that still sounds. I’m not sure why everyone thinks 20 million is so much money. That is average QB money outside or rookie contracts QBs

  8. I’d like to see how he does next year with a new coaching staff. I remember how horrible Jared Goff looked when Fisher was coaching him. Under McVeigh he’s been an entirely different QB.

Maybe with a new HC, OC, QB coach, he eliminates the turnovers and becomes the QB we hoped he was. And if he doesn’t improve with a new coaching staff we can look for his replacement in the 2020 class which is a lot better than next year’s class.

  10. Jamesis is 19-29 as a Starting QB for the Bucs. The Bucs have picked up his option for 21 million next year. If he is resigned to a new contract those numbers will be south of 20 mil for 5 years which will be around $100 million! I’m sorry… he just isn’t worth this type of money! That’s my opinion. I really believe that he lacks the mental toughness to be a top 10 QB. I also believe he has some type of vision issues as I always see him squinting to see through his face mask. I just believe we can get better value at the QB position for a lot less money. I mean Fitzmagic doesn’t make nearly this type of money and has better production with same weapons! I’m not saying Fitz is a better QB…merely stating that their stats are equal while Jamesis will make 15-16 mill more than him next year? There is being a fan and then there is the business side of things. On the business side it just doesn’t make financial sense! Let the 3rd string kid Ryan play out the year at QB to see what we got. We already know what Jamesis can do. 19-29 as a starter! Lastly, a new head coach and possible GM may not want Jamesis as their starting QB! If Jamesis gets hurt these last few games… like a shoulder injury… next years contract becomes guaranteed! If he is unable to play and is paid 21 million next year… where will you get money to sign another QB? And at what price? Can you afford 30 million or so wrapped up at the QB position IF Jamesis reinjures his shoulder in mop up duty this year? It’s a chance I wouldn’t take given the many needs this team has and the raises soon due to our core players. I’m just saying…

    • Again his 20 million next year is nothing. And my question to you and the rest that wasnt to get did of him, what’s your plan? This qb class is awful, and Jameis will likely be the number one QB on the market. So again, what exactly is you plan? As for the record ,that is such a hard stat to pit on a qb when your defense is HISTORICALY bad.

    • Two questions, bucballer. 1- Who is Jamesis? 2- Who are these “core” players we would lose by paying Jameis? Wait, one more. 19-29…. Ok. A crap-ton of int’s…. Ok. But, how many yards and TD’s? Don’t give me that garbage time stats trash talk, either. When you take the defense into consideration, almost ALL of the stats any QB puts up would be garbage-time numbers. This D can’t stop anybody and we’re almost ALWAYS playing catch-up. Does he make some bonehead plays? Hell yeah, he does. But, hasn’t he also wowed us with his ability to extend plays and escape pressure? I’ll hang up and listen

  11. So Grayballs you believe Jamesis is worth a hundred million? U see, I want him to be. Had season tickets for 20 years! I just don’t believe he is. Are we getting value with that kind of contract for his type production. About “those core players” any player who we might have who might be due a 2nd contract. When your QB eats up that type of salary, simple economics tells us that everyone can’t get paid! LT? LB? to name a couple. Look we are all Buc fans here. We want the Bucs to win! I think we have way too many needs on the defensive side of the ball to give a 100 million to a QB who is going to throw 2 picks and have a fumble just about every game he plays! I think we can improve and get better value at the QB position! It’s as simple as that. You can disagree with the opinion but it is a valid question to be asked! Would you resign Jamesis to a 12-15 million range…that seems a bit more reasonable to me. 20 plus million a year… I think not! Go Bucs!

  12. Hey cgmaster. How about we leave it up to the next head coach to decide? There r options beside Jameis. Could a Teddy Bridgewater be a bridge QB or maybe even a Tyrod Taylor. I am not anti Jameis! I just believe that he has not showed me, as one single Buc fan opinion, that he is worth that type of money. If you overpay at some positions it only stands to reason that you cannot allot that money elsewhere. I’ll tell you another Buc that I question if we are getting value for the salary he is making… that’s McCoy…I like Gerald. Say hi to him at high school football games as our children attend same school. It’s just he is now a 10 year vet. Our defense sucks… historically sucks! Trade him to a contender so he can get a ring. He just takes up a lot of cap for his production numbers! Gholston as well. Clearly overpaid for his production numbers. I’m just saying…

  13. Well, if the Bucs are going to keep him, they should pay him the $100 million now. The aternative is 2020 franchise tag followed by either another franchise or a deal with huge guarantees.

Let him walk or give him a contract next April. The Redskins/Cousins situation comes to mind.

  14. Jameis might not be worth 100 million, or the 20 million for next year, but the Bucs will pay it. We really kind of agree when some of you point to Winston’s flaws as a franchise Q.B., however we still see the need to keep him at least for next year. 20 million for one year on a 24 yr old #1 pick Q.B. is a chump change gamble.

  17. $20m for a QB is middle of the road money. Has JW earned a $100m extension? No. Has he done enough to warrant a tryout in another scheme with a different coach in his ear? IMO, yes. Remember, the “good Jameis” is very good.

It’s not like any of the young players outside of our pass catchers have flourished under this regime.

Give the young players a new direction and a new leader and see what we have before giving up on them all.

Here’s a thought: Licht has spent the last few years bringing in “football players.”. Guys like Winston and Kwon and MJ Stewart and Carlton Davis and Ali Marpet and JPP and Ryan Jensen, etc. They all love the game and play a physical brand of football. But They’re all playing for the softest coaching staff in the league. No attitude, no toughness, no identity outside of soft and passive. How about bringing in a coach that can I still some toughness and attitude before we blow the team up.
