Scott/Mark I wanted to ask what you feel the future of Dennis Hickey is going to be? We all know he is a close friend of Mark Dominik, but he has also survived a few regimes in one form or another. Dominik fell on the sword, but is that enough? Is Lovie looking to replace the scouting staff? I know this usually happens after the draft, as opposed to being canned along with the coaching staff leaving nobody to scout for the May draft. But has there been any rumblings that Lovie is lining up his own scouting staff? Is that more the job of our new GM who has yet to be hired? Could Stokes advance to director of player personnel, and we could push Hickey out the door? I know he has supposedly gotten an interview with Miami for their vacant GM position; but lets be honest, the guy has hit his ceiling and may have even failed upwards to reach it. This guy always seems to get alot of credit for guys like Lavonte David and Doug Martin... but none of the blame for DaQuan Bowers, Luke Stocker (who we traded up for), Brian Price and Arrelious Benn. Not to mention the Myron Rolle incident which got him his first press ever (and not the good kind). Any chance we are just delaying his exit until after the draft? Or could we jettison him pretty quickly after the new GM is hired?Inquiring minds want to know.
No one other than Lovie and the owners know. But if they do make changes, we were told it most likely wouldn't happen until the draft. Certainly if Hickey left that opens up a spot. If they promote from within that bodes well for the rest of the staff in my opinion.

Stokes if Hickey takes a job elsewhere, I'm guessing.

If Stokes gets promoted to take over for Hickey, I'm sure he would keep most of the regional scouts and infrastructure that is in place.I guess I'm wondering that if Hickey doesn't get a GM gig (which he won't) does Lovie clean house for the sake of bringing his own people in, or does he look past this pothole to keep his name a little less smudged in the nepotism angle? For arguments sake, I would love our new GM to name his own Director of Player Personnel/ VP. I think some fresh faces are needed with more connections to the current clubs in today's NFL. Guys like M Ross bring connections to Andy Reid and the Eagles and his scouting system along with the Mara family and Jerry Reese. Remember how Arthur Blank hired Dimitroff and he brought some of the Pioli and Belichick tree to Atlanta? Yes, we are cultivating the Dungy tree here, but we should double (triple) up with a solid GM / Director of Player Personnel hires. Someone with connections to some of the other "clubs" or "trees" in the league. Maybe our new GM couldn't pick his first coach, but at least he should get who he needs in his personnel department, right?
Mustard, you should read Armando Saguero. He says Hickey had a strong interview and while initially was viewed as a no chance candidate, now is seen as a top contender for job.

Thanks! I checked it out:Source: Hickey 'hit one out of the park'When one NFL source floated Dennis Hickey's name to me as a Dolphins general manager candidate Thursday, I dismissed it.Hickey doesn't seem like a hot commodity. He's something of a career Tampa Bay Buccaneers worker drone. And, after all, his own organization that is conducting a general manager search as are the Dolphins have not interviewed their own guy. Then on Friday Hickey's name came up again and it turns out not only is he a candidate but a very, very serious candidate, another source familiar with the process said Friday.I'm told the Hickey interview was among the longest the Dolphins have conducted during the search that has already included interviews for seven candidates. Brian Xanders had a two-day, 11-hour interview earlier this week and Hickey was not far behind him. And I'm told Hickey "hit one out of the park," with Dolphins owner Stephen Ross.I'm told by league sources that even if Hickey isn't hired in Miami, he is actually so well regarded by the Bucs that he may be asked to remain under the new general manager once that candidate is chosen. As you know, I've previously reported that Ray Farmer, Lake Dawson and Xanders opened eyes for the Dolphins owner. I would now add Hickey among that company of top tier candidates. The Dolphins have yet to interview Marc Ross of the Giants or Lionel Vital of the Falcons. But there is now some sentiment among those conducting the Dolphins search that the strength of candidates is already beyond initial expectations. So this search is nearing its end.The Dolphins will soon whittle the field to perhaps two candidates and then pick their man.So, yes, the Dolphins are so far very pleased with their search. Yes, they believe they have identified nearly a handful of potential hires. And, yes, Dennis Hickey is improbably among the top of the group.Read more here: http://miamiherald.typepad.com/dolphins_in_depth/2014/01/source-hickey-hit-one-out-of-the-park.html#storylink=cpy I'm really hoping this guy gets a gig elsewhere. Like it has been said, it's telling that we haven't even interviewed him.
Thank the heavens. The Dolphins were so desperate they hired a guy we were going to fire.

Based on the way people were turning them down that might be the only type of guy they could hire.
Saw nowhere from OBP or anyplace else that Hickey was going to be fired.I understand your dislike for him, but there are others who disagree with your viewpoint.Scouting is not a science. The way I understand it, most NFL teams work is a presentation with recommendations. It's not just one person who makes a decision.
US, it's not just about the scouting. I'm pretty sure PR reported on Hickey's lack of media savvy years ago (he's a GM now - he'll need it). And here's Charlie Campbell on Hickey:Sources with the Buccaneers tell WalterFootball.com that internally, many staff members expect director of player personnel Dennis Hickey to be let go after the draft if he has any years remaining on his contract. Many around the league and with the Buccaneers were surprised that Hickey wasn't fired with former general manager Mark Dominik and head coach Greg Schiano. Hickey took over running the Bucs drafts in 2006, and their poor performance in the drafts played a huge role in the Bucs' 28-52 record over the past five seasons. Sources with the Buccaneers say that Hickey's future will be up to the new general manager to decide, but many staffers don't believe he'll survive the post-draft turnover in scouting departments. Some sources found it laughable that Hickey was interviewed for the Dolphins general manager position and believe that was further proof that Miami owner Stephen Ross doesn't know what he's doing. Some in the league view Hickey as a coach and general-manager killer. The Bucs are on their fourth head coach and will be on third general manager since Hickey was promoted to the director of college scouting in 2006. In the scouting community, Hickey has the reputation of making a lot of poor evaluations that have led to a plethora of busted picks for Tampa Bay. http://walterfootball.com/seniorbowl2014rumors.php
Booker,thanks.
US, I can't seem to find it, but earlier I saw Charlie mention that Hickey's poor people skills caused a few good scouts to leave the Bucs when their deals were up.
In the scouting community, Hickey has the reputation of making a lot of poor evaluations that have led to a plethora of busted picks for Tampa Bay. Making matters worse, Hickey has terrible people skills; some of the Buccaneers' top scouts left the team because they didn't like working with him. The Patriots, Jets and Bills just got a gift.

CC not pulling any punches. Ouch.
I don't know enough about Hickey to say one way or the other, but I think a lot of the time in Tampa the problem is player development and scouting takes the blame.
