The Bucs need a new general manager and Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff told PewterReport.com on Monday he thinks Lionel Vital would be the ideal candidate. https://www.pewterreport.com/index.php?option=com_k2&Itemid=20&view=item&layout=item&id=9576

I'm pretty stoked that the GM of the closest thing we have to an Arch-Enemy is pimping this guy.

All the appearances of a figurehead position anyway.  Lovie's the GM, otherwise he'd probably be in Detroit.

That's a ridiculous statement. The GM still has to do all the work. The head coach doesn't have time to do as in depth player evaluations as the GM, who will have final say in the draft. The GM will also be in charge of managing the cap, signing free agents, etc... The days of a head coach operating as GM are long gone. The only authority Lovie has over the GM is the composition of the final 53, which is reasonable. In the end, the HC/GM combo is a collaborative relationship in any high-functioning organization. So, no, the new GM will not be a mere figurehead.

Not asking anybody else to take my definition, but someone who only works on contracts is not a GM in my book.  Lovie, although listening to scouting information and discussing it with others, will have the final say in the draft whether that's what is publicly stated or not.  If Lovie wants player X, trust me, the new "GM" won't argue.  His final "decision" will be what Lovie wants....or he'll  soon be unemployed.  This was agreed to long before Lovie was officially hired here.  The new "GM"  will be a figurehead now, but with his foot in the door he's still building a nice resume.

It's nice to know that Pewter Report has posters who've seen the contracts and been privy to the discussions on such matters as these.

Seems to me you presume an adversarial relationship based on power. I don't think Lovie is going to be a dictator over personnel. A head coach relies on information from the GM and they better have a collaborative relationship or things are screwed from the beginning. This means the GM isn't a figurehead, and I'm pretty sure Lovie doesn't want a mere figurehead. I'm pretty sure the Glazers would like to have a strong steady influence in the front office. If you are willing to ignore that the GM does all the player evaluation work year-round and manages the scouts and the directors of pro and college personnel... as well as having final say on the draft (reports say Lovie does not have this authority)... You can call it whatever you want, but the reality is that he is going to be the primary person responsible for player evaluations. This is an extremely important hire. He's not just a contract negotiator.

Well, we're all working from internet reports. The most recent version I've heard is Lovie has final say on the final 53 and the GM has final say over the draft. This seems to be a reasonable balance, and one that would still allow them to attract good GM candidates.

Yep, twitter and such.  And for Ryan's sake,  let me emphasize, I'm expressing my opinion using common sense, even though I failed to add, " imo " .

Isn't it redundant to post "imo" on a message board ;-)

I thought so, hence the earlier omission.

LOL.  Talk about an over generalization. I imagine the new GM will have a hand in hiring staff, hiring scouts, scouting talent from college and the pro's, managing the cap, writing contracts, communicating with the league and union about transactions etc, and talking to agents. As well as many other duties. Would a person with those responsibilities be called a GM in your mind?

So how would this make a GM a figurehead? Doesn't Lovie's "power" seem kind of normal?
