I'm by no means "all in" on Clowney, but I think you have to consider him a special case in some ways. Remember that he got to watch - up-close - Marcus Lattimore go from sure-fire first rounder to 4th rounder after two horrific injuries. And everybody on the planet seemed to be telling him that he was good enough to go #1 overall last year. Those aren't easy things to juggle at such an age. Due dilligence and the interview process are going to be important with him.

Obviously I'm more of a "fan" of young Clowney - but I agree completely. I'm all for an interview process that specifically determines his commitment after he took himself out of the line-up for certain games this year. His coaches even admitted that they asked him to accept a different role this season - which had a direct affect on his sack total. If the guy is committed - I have no doubt that Lovie's group could maximize his talent - can only wish that Marinelli would be the one working the d-line here in Tampa.

Yes. Plus, when you have millions and millions of dollars on the line and there is no possible upside to playing one more year in the NCAA - I'm being careful too.You can pedal crap about "playing for the team" but let's be real - that's money that's going to him and his future family. The interviews/background processes are going to be huge because if he's just protecting his career, great. If he has no fire, well that's too bad.

Probably one of the best cover corners in the game...

If Clowney is even available it will be an interesting early exercise for our new regime

Actually, extreme caution is this regimes most valued attribute.I hope that we would trade up - but I actually know we will stand pat. Easier to take it as it comes - nothing risked means no chance it comes back on you if it goes bad. They (Dungy-ites) also really do believe their system doesn't require elite athletes. If everyone executes and STRICTLY manages his gap/zone responsibility - you don't "need" eite athletes. So I expect them to take who ever is available on their board - at number 7.Unfortunately - that means missing great players...wonder what Dungy's defense would have looked like with anyone other than 99 playing the under like he was born for it - and 99 never "took off" until the Spaceman landed (Simeon Rice, and maybe it was "hovered"), and if they'd have enforced todays rules on Lynch - he'd be as much a pariah as Gohlson is right now...My hope is that Lovie really does know he needs some elite players at some specific skill positions...and that one they should really consider is Jadeveon Clowney.

I have no idea where you get your info.  Lovie brought Peppers to Chicago, why would he do that if he didn't think he needed elite players? You're overplaying the whole "cover-2" Dungy thing:"But if spending more than $100 million of the franchise's money in one day isn't a splash, then we all should want to party with that cowboy. The truth is, the Bears probably overspent for 30-year-old defensive end Julius Peppers, who will get a guaranteed $42 million in a six-year, $91.5 million deal. Just for fun, they also signed tight end Brandon Manumaleuna to a five-year deal worth $17 million with $6 million guaranteed, and running back Chester Taylor to a four-year, $12.5 million deal with $7 million guaranteed. Peppers told the media that he was genuniely touched that Lovie Smith came to North Carolina to recruit him.And who's kidding whom? Friday's bonanza was born as much of desperation as football savvy. That said, do any Bears fans really care today what motivated Angelo & Co. to get the job done? Do they care if future salary caps are thrown out of whack? Or even if Peppers can muster only a decent year or two before settling into a comfort zone of five or six sacks a year?If you're a Bears fan, you'd still rather have Peppers in Chicago Friday than see him in a Philadelphia Eagles jersey next season. Without a first- or second-round draft pick at present, "long term" is a phrase that is entirely irrelevant to the Bears. Besides, it isn't our money, so why sweat it? The Bears' first order of business was getting a pass-rusher and Peppers, a 6-foot-7, approximately 280-pound five-time Pro Bowler also named to the NFL's All-Decade team, is freakishly athletic with game-changing ability and was the best player available in free agency, period. So Smith boarded a private plane, flew to North Carolina and sat in the lobby of the Wilson Air Center adjacent to the Charlotte Airport (we won't talk about the possibility of any earlier discussions between the Bears and Peppers' people because that would've been against the rules). "I was caught off-guard by that," Peppers said of Smith's recruiting trip. "My agent called me at midnight and told me that Lovie was at the airport. Actually, I was sleeping because I haven't been sleeping at all this week. I've been a little anxious to find out what was going to happen. "I had no plans on coming, I just went by to say, 'Hello,' but I met him, it felt right, it felt good, and that's when I made a decision to come [visit Chicago]." Peppers was genuinely moved by Smith's gesture -- "I wish [Smith] had a twin so one of them could have come and got me, too," cracked Taylor -- and said he had been "observing [Smith] from afar." "I always liked his demeanor, how his teams played," said Peppers. "They always played hard, they always give it their all." Peppers also got positive reviews on Smith from Carolina teammates and former Bears Muhsin Muhammad, Chris Harris and Dante Wesley, so there is no diminishing Smith's influence. As for his and Angelo's judgment, we'll obviously have to see.

Not to mention that the draft is such a crap shoot, you're usually better not spending draft picks (especially when we're light this year) to move up.  The number of trade-ups that have failed far outweight those that have succeeded - and even when you have a success like Julio Jones or RG3 the results are murky.

which is explains why Dungy drafted McFarland while Sapp was with the Bucs . .  . and took McFarland to Indy ..

Ask Vincent Smith what he thinks about Jadeveon Clowney's passion for the game.I think he's actually able to keep solid foods down now.

The problem is one spectacular play does not make a career...consistency and playing down in an down out builds a career. Clowney had one great year, a decent year and a sub par or below average year not to mention could not mentally play through minor nicks that all football players must be able to not only play through but produce. He mentally checked out as he did not want to get hurt...ultimately it might have hurt his draft stock and could cause teams to doubt him especially if and when he gets paid...

agree  Prediction:  Clowney at best will be a situational pass rusher his entire career.  Oh he will test fantastic for the combine and everyone again will claim he is the greatest DE prospect in the history of the game.  What they will soon find out is He is all for the glory but lacks the guts!  I have never seen a college player constantly pull himself out of games.  Even Spurrier was pulling his hair out with Miss Clowney's attitude concerning having a hang nail to keep him on the sideline. For every decent play he made I saw at least 2 or 3 with him taking himself completely out of plays run to his side of the field.  Seems to have no interest in containment and holding the edge.He is all about the money.  One play does not make a career!

White Tiger, from what I understand, Lovie is very much about "elite athletes."  I felt like Dungy thought he could mold anyone with "heart," but I don't get that sense from what Chicago people say about Lovie (and I believe he mentioned this in the presser today).

I tend to agree, but even if we are wrong, McCoy for example is has only been turning into a very good (not great yet) player that last couple of years with results, sacks, tfl etc to show for it only this year. If you want an immediate impact DE IMO, the draft is not the place to look.

The last two years McCoy has played at an elite level. He might be the best 3-tech in the league right now.

Frankly, I would love to have Clowney. I'm really not worried about his work ethic this year at all. I remember some of the same stuff was said about Suh a couple of years back. But, we really can't afford a trade up this year. We are not trading Revis and we just don't have enough draft picks this year to sacrifice another one or two of them. We already are short a #3 and a #6 and it would probably cost our #2 to get to the 2nd pick and IMO that's just not going to happen as we still have a few too many holes.I'd like to trade down and pick up an extra 3rd or 4th, but even if we can't we need to come out the draft with 2 players with starting potential, not one. JMO.

Think there's a bit more to Clowney than just a situational pass rush specialist - but I will agree he needs coaching. He's not ranked #2 overall because defensive line coaches think he's a situational pass rusher.
