If the staff thinks Glennon MIGHT be the guy, but aren't sure, then to avoid the mistake of taking a non-QB this year and then picking too late in Rd 1 next year to get a top QB (assuming we end up needing one then) ... why not trade away (if we can find a trade partner) our 2014 Nr. 1 pick in exchange for an additional 2015 Nr. 1 pick? That would give us the ammo we would need next year to move to the top of the draft and get a top QB next year, if Glennon doesn't pan out. And if Glennon does pan out, then we simply have two awesome draft picks in 2015. And having both those picks would give us more leverage and flexibility in contract negotiations in 2015 with many guys who we need to consider whether or not to re-sign.Heck, we aren't going to win the Super Bowl this season in any case. If I were the GM, I would seriously consider trying to pull this off.To pull this off, we would have to smokescreen everyone into believing that we are adamant about taking a QB at Nr. 7 this year, which would entice some other team to trade with us.
It's an interesting idea, but my fear is that next years QB's may not live up to expectations. When players gain that added scrutiny applied to them (like Teddy Bridgewater now) they lose some of their lustre. Only it will be that Petty and Mariota don't take snaps from under centre and only throw short passes / Winston has character concerns or something. Remember that last year Geno, Nassib and Barkley were "consensus" First Rounders at one point.
I don't think that flies. Windows open and close too quickly, things change so fast in the NFL. Too even give the appearance, never mind plot, to toss away a season for a high draft pick almost a year and a half from now would piss off a lot of people, myself included. You only HAVE so many years on this rock. IMO teams should ALWAYS play to win NOW! Personally, I see no reason the Buccaneers cannot compete to win the South next season. They do that or get in as a wild card and anything can happen. I want that kind of goal, that kind of realistic hope. In 2014.
Garv this wouldn't be "tossing away a season for a high draft pick" -- that's something completely different, namely when teams try to lose. I'm not advocating trying to lose to get a higher pick, I'm advocating trading our pick, going as far as we can this year without that pick, and then having two great picks in 2015. If make the playoffs this year, all the better.
It's not a bad idea, but we wouldn't have to just trade the pick away, we could gain an extra first just trading back in the first far enough. It's essentially what people are advocating when they are talking about trading back for a TE.
I am against trading our first round pick, but all in for trading down IF our guy is not there. I am for wining now as long as we don't trade future draft picks for the now.
Looking at the trade charts we should be able to pick up a 2015 first rounder for our 2nd round pick. If we're trading away our 1st we'd better get more than that.
I don't think this has much of a chance of happening. I believe Lovie and Licht are going to want to roll out a #1 pick this year, since it's symbolically significant, and they really need help now. I think it's a lot more likely that they'd try to trade down in round one to pick up extra picks this year.
I can really see a trade down. Unless you really like and need one of the QB's (and I'm not sure we will be in either bucket) the guys at 7 aren't so unbelievable that moving down would be bad. Recouping that R3 pick would be big this year I think.
I agree with trading down if possible, but not completely out of round 1. I feel like this draft is pretty deep and wish we had a few extra picks to play with. That round 2 pick could be in play - haven't really thought at available round 2 players though. I think normally I'm ok with getting a future pick, but two mitigating things this year - pool is deep; we didn't have a round 1 last year. I don't like missing on cheap premium players twice in a row.

If a player Lovie really want is there at 7, discussion over obviously. Otherwise, sure. trade down. Problem is that might not be so easy this year. A few picks higher and it would have been.
I disagree Garv - I think it's easier to trade now that the dollars are smaller. There have been plenty of trades in round 1 since the CBA. Dallas moved from 14 to 6 (for a corner) in 2012. Buffalo moved down from 8 to 16 so that the Rams could pick Tavon Austin last year. People fall in love with certain prospects and will move to get them, and there's a chance some very interesting players will be there to entice teams at 7.

Sure, if a player someone really wants is there and they believe another team will take him if they don't move up they'll make a deal. But you need that exact situation and other teams will be wanting to trade down as well. It's not as easy as it sounds. Depends on who is still there.
I don't think it's easy, Garv, but I do think there are opportunities.
If Lovie & Tedford thought that there was a QB at 7 that was a perfect fit for them then why not trade Glennon for a late 1st or 2nd. Bring in a vet (McCown) backup and roll with the rookie. They would start fresh with there guy and get value for Glennon.
