Scientists/Futuristic engineers have long dreamed of making a space elevator. Modern calculations suggest they could make rockets obsolete(i'd argue it would be a good idea to keep a few rockets around, to 1) put more up, and 2) fix or replace those that have gone faulty)
I could have sworn they've advanced nanotube manufacture to be able to mass produce them. Nanotubes would be strong enough to make a space elevator a reality.
