No one approach is right, but Japanese culture is at the opposite end of the spectrum from America’s very individualistic culture. This differences presents itself in many ways, but this is one stark example:

Yesterday in the World Cup 11 inferior Japanese players came incredibly close to pulling off an upset for the ages, losing to a vastly superior Belgium in the 94th minute, giving up 3 goals in the second half.

That would be a soul crushing loss for most teams and probably was for Japan and yet they left their mark on the WC not by the crushing defeat but rather by how they chose to leave the locker room.
