He went to the Univ. Of Minnesota on a football scholarship but dropped out after a year.  Was working as a bouncer at a bar and met and befriended Ken Patera, who was trading to be a wrestler with Verne Gagne.  He introduced Rick to Verne and he agreed to train him as well.  A lot of wrestlers from the 70s and 80s were trained by that man.
