It is the mail guy because, as Cardoc said, the clue says 1 and 2 are facing pages. The logic that page 1 usually doesn't have a facing page is true but in this case the clue specifically says they checked those 2 pages.

Not chest or box is now discussed. Money can be held in it, but just as we test its metal, within it there is rust.
